I had to enter il Mercato Italiano on Yelp after a fabulous, totally non-painless online ordering…read moreexperience. So... I'm in love with the hard mint candies that are usually found in Italian restaurants. Unlike the candy stripe, red and white American mints, Sperlari Italian mints are translucent, in clearish green wrapping, and utterly delicious. They freshen your breath like nothing else and are vastly superior to mints in the American market. However, the only place I'd ever seen Sperlari mints was in big bowls at the front of Italian restaurants. My challenge was clear: Either I had to wear a mask and go loot the mint bowl at my favorite Sperlari mint-giving Italian eatery, or I had to find them online. Finding the right Italian mint online was far more difficult than I expected. The specific brand I like most- Sperlari Caramelle Menta- appears to be imported and sold ONLY in bulk. And by bulk, I mean 1600 mints, which is ambitious even for someone like me. I finally found a place that sold the right mints, but they were over $40 (for a zillion) and the snail-mail shipping was astronomical! So I kept looking... Enter, il Mercato Italiano. They sell the same delicious mints for $36.95. AND, FedEx shipping was only $9.38 (compared to the $40 the other place wanted to charge). So I bought them. Yes... I spent over $40 for 3kg of mints... I have a feeling I'll grow to hate them. :) But the entire ordering process at il Mercato Italiano was flawless. They accept paypal, they don't gouge on shipping, they carry a lot of rare imported Italian products, and their slowest, cheapest shipping arrived in less than 3 days. For 2 day shipping at the other website, I would have paid almost $80. I love buying rare, hard-to-find, unique food online, so although I haven't been to Green Bay, WI, I thought it was imperative that I inform my fellow specialty-foods-loving friends of the great finds at il Mercato. Now... anybody want a mint?

Green Bay Farmer's Market - Nice flower vendor lady who was kind enough to allow me to take her picture. As you can see, the flowers are also beautiful.

I ended up picking up cherries, kohlrabi, and a few sweet treats to take home. Everything felt fresh and full of variety. The other one is across the river on Broadway St. It is held on Wednesday's, late Afternoon/early evening. Both are great! Not sure which one I like better. They both have many of the same vendors, but the time of day and location, bring a little different vibe to the events. The great thing about the Saturday one is it's in the morning. A little bit more laid back. It's a great way to start your morning with coffee and a pastry while you shop the many stands from local farmers, restaurants and businesses. The Wednesday one is on Broadway which has a few more bars and restaurants, so it has a little bit more of a "happy hour" feel to it (if you want to enjoy some music, food and booze this would be your pick). I look forward to getting to as many as possible. Even when I don't need anything... yet I always find something to buy! Farmers Markets in Green Bay, to me, means it's finally nice out!

As a lifetime connoisseur of cheese curds, I like to think I know the right factors to look for in…read moreevaluating exceptional curd quality. The Laney curds were as good as they get! The first and obvious sign is the freshness factor. The proper octave of squeak is just not present in most of your basic b curds. Biting into Laney curds sounded like a happy pup gnawing on its favorite squeak toy. The most satisfying squeak of a fresh cheese curd upon gently pressing your fangs into them.. really knows no comparison. Next is proper saltiness. This cheese is too salty for me..said no one..ever. Laney curds had just the right amount of salt to keep you coming back for more but without feeling the need to fill up on worthless water, taking up much needed stomach real estate for precious cheese curds. Lastly, the texture is key. Soft but not rubbery and firm enough to produce the squeak is the sweet spot these curds achieved. Let them warm to room temp, and the softness produces a new and novel texture, making the thought of devouring the entire pound a near maddening obsession. Now that I have properly described the quality of the best cheese known to human kind, I can comment on other aspects of the business. Their small shop surrounded by farmland with homemade products is quite appealing. We were greeted with friendly service and found the price to be very competitive in regards to the cheese curd market value. Highly recommended, would nom their cheese again.
