I had liposuction performed in May 2010, and I regret going to Dr Savage.
He treated the inner and outer sides of my upper thighs using power assisted liposuction. He told me that only 10% of his patients require revision operations and that the majority require revision to remove additional fat. He mentioned that fat grafting, which is how one treats areas where too much fat was removed, is very difficult, but he didn't seem to think that this would be a problem.
His assistant handled the scheduling well and was always friendly in my interactions with her. Both of his offices looked clean and professional.
The instructions I was given when I left the hospital after surgery only pertained to managing pain and caring for the incisions. The pain was what I had expected, and within a few days I could return to work. The incisions for my inner thighs are barely visible now, and the ones for my outer thighs are visible but small. Neither of these issues were a problem.
However, the bruising lasted six weeks, which was much longer than I had expected. The swelling didn't go down until August, and I noticed that the areas treated felt like there were hard pads underneath the skin. My thighs were also very unshapely.
I was afraid that he had removed all the subcutaneous fat and what I was feeling was my muscle, so I made an appointment to discuss this issue with him. He said 20% of his patients have "adhesions" after surgery, where the skin sticks to the tissue underneath, giving the sensation of hard pads, but it would go away. He seemed very unconcerned. I mentioned the contour irregularities, specifically pointing to the depression at the middle of my thighs where the treated area met the untreated area. He claimed that the area he treated was higher on my thighs, which was not true and made me feel like he was covering for himself.
To treat the adhesions, he suggested I massage the hard pads, which HURT! I massaged them dutifully three times a day, five minutes for each area, for three weeks, and the pain decreased. However, the hardness I felt WAS my muscles. So now I have areas on my thighs that are lumpy and dented, and some of the dents are areas where there is no subcutaneous fat at all.
I've seen two other plastic surgeons for second opinions, both of whom agreed that what happened to my thighs were very poor results and that, given that the only way to fix them would involve fat grafting, which is a very difficult technique, it is likely that my thighs will always look somewhat unnatural, even if I have revision surgery. One of the surgeons told me that it would cost about three times as much to have the revision surgery done compared to the original surgery because evening out the "shelves" (at the edges of the dents where the treated region meets the untreated region) and performing fat grafting take a much longer time than the initial liposuction did.
When I came back for my six-month follow up in November, he said that the dent (where there was no fat) on my left thigh was not good, but the other regions were "satisfactory". They are not at all satisfactory to me, and it makes me question his aesthetic judgments. I also resented how he insisted that he had merely done the work "that we had outlined together". I had insisted that the outcome look natural above all else, and my thighs look deformed. I have not seen anyone else at the beach or elsewhere in public with thighs that look like mine do now.
I asked if he would refund my money, at least the surgeon's fee (which was $3750), but he said no. He offered to do the revision surgery free of charge, but there is no way I'm going to trust him to perform surgery on me after I was disappointed with every single place he treated last time.
My thighs look much, much worse now than they ever did when they were "fat" (and now that I look back at old pictures, my thighs weren't unattractive at all!). I can see the dents even when I wear jeans, unless they are loose fitting. My friends and family say that it's not really noticeable because it's not like people ever really check out other people's legs. If you would like to see the results yourself, please go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/55908021@N04/5175807093/ (I don't have any before pictures, I'm afraid, but you can see the lumpy results). I paid almost $5000 for this damage. There was a period over the late summer and early fall when I was very depressed about my appearance, more than I ever was before the surgery (and I was not happy with my appearance before, or else I wouldn't have wanted the surgery in the first place). Now I'm working really hard so that I can save up money to have the revision done.
I'm writing this review so that anyone who has made the choice to have liposuction can cross Dr Savage off of their list. I wish that I had been able to find reviews of Boston-area surgeons when I was making my choice. read more
