Technique, like reading notes and perfecting rhythm, comes a little later. Building enjoyment and confidence in piano-playing comes first. Two years into lessons and getting my daughter to practice everyday (or almost everyday) still takes some external motivation from me, but for my 11 year old, there's no getting around that. I know there's no way she would've stuck it out this long had we started lessons the way I did when I was a kid, with scales, and memorizing notes. Amanda is a combination of demanding and understanding, and holds my daughter accountable for her own piano education (with me as "coach"). She makes corrections in a positive manner.
