Critiques often focus on whether the department's training and accountability systems adequately prevent excessive force, especially in encounters with vulnerable populations such as the homeless or mentally ill. 2. Transparency and Accountability: There have been complaints that the department isn't always fully transparent with the public regarding internal investigations or disciplinary actions. This can create a perception that officers aren't held accountable for misconduct. 3. Relations with Marginalized Communities: Like many law enforcement agencies, SBPD has faced criticism for its interactions with marginalized groups. Issues cited include racial profiling, biased policing, or failure to engage meaningfully with the community in building trust. 4. Resource Allocation: Some critics argue that the SBPD prioritizes certain types of enforcement (like traffic citations or minor offenses) over community support, mental health intervention, and crime prevention programs. This can leave systemic problems unaddressed. 5. Staffing and Training Challenges: Santa Barbara is a tourist-heavy area with seasonal population spikes. Critics say that the department sometimes struggles with staffing and training to handle peak demands safely and fairly, leading to lapses in service or inconsistent enforcement. This isn't an attack on every officer or the whole department--many officers work hard and ethically--but it highlights structural and community concerns that have been raised over time.

I have been to Santa Barbara a few times, but I have to admit that I hadn't appreciated it as much…read moreas I did on my most recent trip! Hubby & I came to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We really played tourist and had a great time! It's a great city for walking around! We stayed at the ocean front Harbor View Inn and we scored a partial ocean view room! Great place to stay! When in Santa Barbara, you must and probably will go to Stearns Wharf! We went three times during this visit! If you get the chance, eat at the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company. It's so good! We also visited the Santa Barbara Museum Of Natural History | Sea Center. Admission was $17 per adult. Be sure to go to the Train Station. There is a humongous tree there which I'm sure you've seen from afar! You need to see it in person. It's the Moreton Bay Fig Tree from Australia. It was was from a cutting and planted in 1877. I saw it in 2020 when it was not as overgrown as it is today. There was no chain link fence, just the smaller black one. We walked up State Street to Old Town (downtown) Santa Barbara. We used the State Street Undercrossing. Improvements made to it were finished last year. State Street in Old Town is closed off to vehicular traffic. It's mostly a safe place for pedestrians. Just be alert and wary of e-Bikes and cyclists. There's lots of restaurants and bars in this area. We also drove around Santa Barbara. We went to Hook & Press Donuts. Very good donuts! Give them a try! This shop is located in the La Arcada Plaza. While here, go explore! There are lots of sculptures and cute shops. If you like art, the Museum of Art is around the corner. We took The Land Shark Tour. It was a blast! I found it online and they still had reservations available, so I booked it. Our captain and tour guide were awesome! This tour will take you into town and into the Pacific Ocean! Just do it!! I want to take the Trolley next time I'm here. Yes, I will be back!

I was driving a 1998 Toyota Landcruiser and I notice bolts and grease spots where I parked my car. Someone must have drove off with it, I thought. An hour later after I filled it out, one of my roommates came home and asked what I was doing. She told me she thought she saw my car parked on Pardall (right after the mini tunnel that you bike/skate through to get to IV from campus)... Pause... Silence... The Bike Cop biked with me (I was on my black beach cruiser) and yep... parked right infront of what used to be a Chinese Restaurant, now Chino's or something? I apologized to the cop and he told me I shouldn't drink as much and he biked my cruiser home for me. Yeah, I drove my car home (6700 block of Sabado) and he biked with my bike in hand. WOW! I was a lucky lady that day.

Not so long ago, I was a student at UCSB…read more I don't think many even realized that there was a UCSB Police Department until either one of two things happened...you had your bike stolen, or you had your bike impounded. Neither happened to me...gotta love kryptonite locks. Wait...the police have bolt cutters. Well, I avoided both irregardless. The men and women at the UCPD were pretty cool. I used to go by on my skateboard and high-five them as they were writing tickets to the people riding their bikes on the sidewalk. It's cool those yellow-shirted CSO's would give courtesy escorts after dark and did their best to move bikes to the proper parking areas instead of impound them. They also answered my questions about the parking situation so I knew what rule not to break. The bike auctions kinda suck though....crappy bikes that have been sitting in the elements for way too long. Give these men and women a brake and say hi to them...chances are, they will go out of their way to be nice to you in the future.

I been having this issue with the homeless where they have been defecating across my place. I called PH police department and they were very helpful where the homeless stopped using my immediate house area as a bathroom. Today I happened to have this issue and called PHPD, but I had a very negative experience. The operator kept asking me what I wanted to do, since the person who defecated was no longer in the area. I explained to her 3 or 4 times how this was handled before, so, it seems like this person shouldn't be in this position to address this kind of issues. Her very unprofessional attitude was terrible. I just had to hang up since my call didn't go anywhere. Good luck trying to contact the right person here.
