He is so friendly and engaging, not to mention a fountain of great historical information. The museum is two buildings. The front building is located in the 1926 old folks home that was created to care for the elderly who didn't have anyone to help them. In 1965 this building was converted into offices for the County Agricultural and the Home Demonstration Agent. They moved out in 1980 and the building sat vacant. In 1982 the County Commission approved the establishment of a Historical Museum that officially opened in this building in 1983. In June of 1999, the Museum was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum added a new exhibits back building in 2003. The Museum of Seminole County History is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Seminole County and that of Central Florida. You start your visit in the Old Folks Home. There is a gift shop area in the front and you can also make a donation to the museum here. Exhibits throughout the museum include Native American history, Spanish exploration, American Revolution, Civil War, army forts, pioneer life, early transportation, early medical practices, the development of Central Florida towns, a replica of the Martha Gwynn Fox Room, police and fire department, and the Seminole Correctional Facility. The back building has a replica of a log cabin, buggies, early farm tools, and sculptures made by local artists from bald cypress wood from the Senator, the oldest and largest bald cypress tree in the US. The tree was in Big Tree Park until an arson fire in 2012 destroyed it. Some of the wood was salvaged for these sculptures. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this history museum. The comprehensive displays were well thought out and interesting. I was able to pick up pamphlets and printouts that led me to other historical cities and sites. If you have any history questions Bennett Lloyd and the Museum of Seminole County is a great resource that can launch you into a deeper understanding of the people and events that shaped this part of Florida.

It was such an…read moreenriching experience and the staff here especially the teacher guide explaining the history behind the telephones does such a fantastic job of making it so fun and interactive. I loved the way he was able to story tell it and get all the kiddos excited and involved! Kudos and big raise for him please. The grounds have lots of interesting sculptures to see as well. The place includes an art gallery (I recommend the current exhibition by André Smith), the museum with a collection of works and items from Florida that tells the story of Indigenous peoples and white settlers from even before colonization, the Telephone Museum, a chapel with Mayan architecture (which can even be rented for weddings), a covered venue for events that can also be rented, and outdoor areas with some sculptures. A cool weekend outing, and also inexpensive: the admission to the art gallery is only six dollars for adults and free for seniors and students.

Lots of old…read morestuff The Lake Mary Historical Museum is a cool old building that was built back in 1926 as a community center. It then served as the town hall from 1973 to 1996 and now it serves as the historical museum and historical society. The building isn't particular large but has a wonderful front porch and an interior that is stuffed full of cool artifacts and displays. The exhibitions change from time to time and when I went the the theme was Honor our Military. Lots of old helmets, uniforms, models, magazines, papers and other stuff that represents the military, especially Lake Mary's contribution to the various wars. They manage to get quite of bit of stuff in here, especially since the front of the building also has to serve as a meeting place for the historical society and needs open space for tables and chairs. Other exhibitions show and emphasize different aspects of Lake Mary's past so there is something new displayed frequently. The people working here are exceptional friendly and nice and will answer any possible questions you might have and the museum even has a small gift shop. A cool little museum for anyone wanting to know about the history of Lake Mary.

A very old…read moreschool The Student Museum of Sanford is the fourth oldest school in continuous use in Florida. It started out in 1902 as Sanford High School and then when the new high school was built in 1911 was changed to a grammar school. It served in this capacity until 1984 and now is an interpretive center and teaching museum. A building that has taught a lot of things to a lot of people. The structure is in a Romanesque Revival Style and is one of the few buildings left in Florida from this period. It had two wings added in 1916 but still retains it's very distinctive and cool looks. The outside is interesting to look at with the fascinating architecture and nice gardens in the back but it's the inside that has the really good stuff. Lots of well designed rooms with different names that emphasized aspects of the regions history. My favorite was the early school room with the quaint old desks, items and artifacts that really takes you back in time. The museum is only open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1:30 to 3PM because it takes on it's other role as a interpretive center and teaching museum and is usually crawling with kids. They is no charge and there are always people around to answer any stupid questions you might have. Definitely one of the most fascinating museums in the area that just has so much cool stuff to look at. Unfortunately not many people have even heard of it because the the short hours that it is open to the public. That's fine because it continues to function in it's main role as a place that educates and teaches. One that it has been doing for a long, long time.

We strongly consider this location for our wedding years ago, but decided on an alternate location due to number of attendees. Everything here is maintained impeccably and has true historic value for Winter Park. I definitely recommend coming and doing a house tour on site and learning a little bit more about the history. They do also have plenty of events that take place here so be sure to check out their calendar for updates. Staff is incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you may have. Overall: A++ A great historic site in the midst of Winter Park that you'll want to take a tour of and learn more about!

The selection was larger than I knew it would be as I thought only of Tiffany Lamps, but it is the glass making, pottery and even art as well! The red brick Classical Revival building was built in 1917 by Algernon Blair of Montgomery. James Wetmore served as the supervising architect. The building is typical of government buildings of the time and it is trimmed in Georgia sandstone and white sandstone pillars. The original exterior is still intact. After a new post office was built two blocks away in 1962 it became the city library and in 1975 part of the Seminole County library system. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I love the architecture of this building and today it is looking better than ever as the Sanford Welcome Center. Their mission is to provide education and information as they market Sanford as "an arts, culture, recreation, and historic destination." I popped in during my visit to town and was warmly greeted by Rosie. I had a great chat with her. Inside the welcome center you will find public restrooms, cheap snacks and drinks, attraction brochures, maps, and places to stay and dining recommendations. The Chamber of Commerce has an office. Downtown historic Sanford is experiencing a renaissance. Check in here to learn about events, food and drink, and one of a kind experiences in this charming town.

Most of the time they have an art gallery in the back containing art from local residence. There's always someone there to help you if you need to get advice of where to eat or things to do. They also have bathrooms and a small place to sit if you want to rest and get out of the heat and check out the Sanford newspaper. I come here at least once a week there is always something different to see each week. Walking distance to many restaurants, shops and the beautiful Lake Monroe lakefront.
