Luckily I found this place when I worked nearby and would often pop in to grab fillets for dinner. Now I make a special trip because like I said, this kind of place is RARE AS, as my son would say. The owners are absolutely lovely and you get that warm community feel of a proper local fishmonger who greets you with a smile on arrival and wishes you a good day when you leave. They also often tuck in a lemon for me and it's those little things that make all the difference. The fish is fresh as can be and not priced at the rip-off rates of some other places I could mention. It's really important to support these small but perfectly formed businesses so give it a go next time you are going to treat yourself (because let's face it, fish is never going to be the cheap staple it should be) to a fish dinner, come here.

While the décor has been left to slide a bit over the years and the walls are getting darker by the hour, the shop that many call "Fat Freddy's Fish" still has the best selection of fresh fish in the area. They will also crumb it for their fish 'n' chips customers, which is an anomaly in Grey Lynn. Their chips are light and fluffy; definitely not bogged down by being left to sit in oil too long. While their opening hours don't extend far into prime fish 'n' chip buyers' hours, this place is still worth a look.

Back to the oysters, some in my household like them a la natural even with a squeeze of lemon; I like to make a simple batter and quickly fry them. Excellent served with a salad. I'm glad I pass by this fish shop regularly on my way home from work because this is where you are guaranteed fresh when it comes to seafood. These guys have a massive warehouse behind the shop and they supply fresh and frozen takeaways, cafes and restaurants around our fair city of Auckland.

We sat inside at one of the two little plastic tables and enjoyed. This is very basic - no napkins, no condiments given (except some lemon), and a faint smell of fish in the air. But once I put that aside, because lets be honest, I want my fish and I'm not going to go open a can of chick peas, this is my fish shop of choice. They always have a lot of different fish available and it is always fresh and presented nicely. The staff are so helpful, they know exactly what they have available and will give you advice on how to cook it too. It's classic fish store practise too and they will give you your fish wrapped up in a blue plastic bag and newspaper. It's cheap as also, much better than the prices you'd get from a supermarket, let alone how fresh it is going to be. Great service, great product, great price.

I was a bit surprised to discover there was minimal seating indoors, although I'm not really sure why, since I've not dined in at many fish shops. The seating was small shippy-things (I'm a bit of a landlubber, so am not sure of their technical term) around large barrels. They were quite uncomfortable to sit on, but since we didn't want to walk all the way home with cold fish, sit on them we did. My husband and I shared two pieces of snapper and chips, with some malt vinegar. And oh god, it was delicious. The fish was amazing - fleshy and white and great flavour, and the batter was the perfect thickness and seasoned with lemon pepper (I think). Chips were chunky and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. I'll definitely be back here - even if I have to perch on an uncomfortable piece of ship furniture to do so!
