Love Sandy's! This was my favorite beach in High school and after! It is great for body boarding. The current and waves are pretty strong. Tourist/beginner swimmers should not swim at this beach. Some days can be calm, mostly during the summer, but other than that it is a pretty rough beach. During the winter, sometimes you can see whales blowing air from shore-pretty awesome. There are bathroom and showers. The parking is pretty packed, but you can always find parking toward the left of the beach (facing the beach). Make sure you hide valuables or don't bring them at all if you can. People also steal belongings when the owners are in the water. This is a great place for getting some sun, hanging out bbq ing with friends. Near HK. Overall one of my favorite beaches! read more

Went Christmas Day around sunset and I was very pleased & enjoyed my trip to the beach which was needed! It was not crowded and the waves were not too strong when I went. I got beautiful piks at the beach ! There's plenty of parking around I loved the beach to just relax and spend time with the hubby ! I wish there wasn't as many rocks as I almost tripped a bunch of times but overall I had a great experience here and will definitely go back again(: Enjoy the pictures, hope you give the beach a chance and have a great experience ! read more

What a beautiful beach! I will say don't come here to swim unless you are a seasoned swimmer with experience with a shore break, or at least with fins and a body board. The shore break here is wild and there's always someone getting pulled out by the lifeguards here. Other than that this is an awesome spot! On the weekends it'll be super crowded heads up. read more

Those who know me know that I'm not an outdoor person. So although I have lived on Oahu most of my life, I don't think I have ever been to Sandy Beach Park. Fortunately, I was invited by a couple of wonderful friends to see the first sunrise of the new year at Sandy Beach Park. It was about a 40-minute drive from the Ala Moana area to Sandy Beach Park. I was shocked and amazed to see hundreds of people were there for the same reason. The first three major parking lots are full so we parked on an unpaved area at the farthest end. It turned out it was a great location because it had the fewest people and natural lava rock formation into the water. Ocean. We stayed for about 45 minutes and watch the sunrise. It was amazing and spiritual. Much more beautiful than I had anticipated. I don't plan on going again anytime soon but it's definitely worth checking out. I strongly recommend it. read more

I've pretty much grown up at Sandys and spent a good part of my younger adult life in the water here. My older brother and his friends would bodysurf/bodyboard here and I'd beg them to drag me along. Then when I was old enough to catch the bus, this is where I'd be hanging out on the weekends. When I started driving...well, i would be here almost everyday. A quick breakdown of the different breaks located within Sandy Beach...starting from the Blowhole side... Gas chambers (most people just say Chambers) Generally the heaviest of the shorebreak spots. Thick wave that dumps pretty hard. Mostly a right. Middle peaks When it's a bit bigger and the waves start capping on the outside, perfect easier take off that leads into the shorebreak. Both right and left. Cobbles Named for the small cobble stones that are there when it's smaller. When the waves move in and out, you can hear the stones knocking against each other as they move. Really neat sounding. Both right and left. Pipe Littles This is where the reef starts. Shallow peak that breaks offshore then runs into the shorebreak, really fun. When I was young, the reef must've had a different shape because the wave would be like a mini-pipeline..which is why it's names that. Sometimes in the late 70s I think (?) the shape of the wave changed. Mostly lefts. Half point Sort of a v-shaped outcropping of reef that's shallow...almost dry reef on really low tides. Named because it's halfway out to Full point..duh..hehe. This is mostly where I'd be if it was breaking. Mostly surfers and bodyboarders here. Both right and left. Panty palace I think most people don't know this name...there's was also a discrepancy between my friends about where it actually is. I knew it as the small patch of sand on the left side (if you're facing the sea) of Half point. If it was big, the people that couldn't handle the shorebreak would catch the smaller waves here...that's how it got it's name. Full point Mostly surfers. A long point break type left that breaks farther out and leads into half point. There's a big piece of reef that sticks out of the water halfway through the ride called sashimi rock...you want to avoid hitting this...hah. Generals Only breaks when it gets pretty big. It's far outiside of Pipe Littles / Half point. You can catch a wave from out there and a lot of times ride it all the way through to Pipe litles or Half point. I've caught a few waves that even connected into the Middle peaks but that's pretty rare. When I was young, I remember Kai Santos's dad used to fill up a large trash bag with air and ride that from way outside. It was the most amazing thing to see. Sandys is a beautiful beach but use caution when entering the water. Most of the injuries happen when it's smaller and people underestimate just how much force the waves have breaking onto the shallow sand. read more

Beach time in December! December 31, 2015 This was the first beach we hit upon arriving in Honolulu yesterday. It is located on Oahu's southeastern shore. The waves were big and the current strong. Came here to relax, take photos and just watch the waves after a short hike to see the Hamama Falls. The kids had fun and enjoyed playing on the water but they did not swim and did not go deep. Even I enjoyed wetting my feet but the tide came up fast and the current almost pulled me back even when I was at the tip of where the water would reach. Only after we spent an afternoon here playing in the beach that we found out that Sandy Beach is known for the strong pounding waves, large powerful shore breaks, high surf and sharp corals... AAAAND one of the most dangerous beaches in Hawaii. Yikes! Great for experienced bodyboarders and bodysurfers, though, but the beach has also been known to break necks even to experienced individuals. We did not see red warning flags and signs posted at the time... there were a lot of surfers and bodyboarders on the water. The beach was busy. There were lifeguards on hand and always alert. This was also my first time trying food from a shrimp truck. Beautiful beach but was not able to get into the water past my ankles due to a dangerous shore break. The lifeguards announced over the speakers this message a few times. The lifeguards said the shore break could hurt your neck and back. I'm a strong swimmer and compete in open water races and didn't think anything of it at first until I felt how strong the shore break was. I did find some sea glass and I think I saw a sea turtle. Some people were out there surfing and body surfing but most people were not risking it. read more

Sandy Beaches is a powerhouse of waves where you can enjoy boogie boarding and surfing without having to paddle hundreds of yards out. The waves break very close to the beach sometimes 50 feet from the sand, so it could be difficult to swim, or even just wade around. Towards the outskirts you can lounge on a chair and enjoy water whilst avoiding the unpredictable monster waves. The surrounding landscape coupled with the dynamic ocean creates awesome pictures ops, so bring a camera! Caution: Be extra careful if you have little kids. While taking pictures I thought I had to dive in and save these two teenagers who got pummeled by oncoming waves along the rocky shoals. Only docked a star because it could be hazardous, especially if you are a novice beach bum like me. If on the way to Waimanalo or Kailua, stop in and see why this is where the locals come for fun :) read more

Sandy Beach is the equivalent to Big Beach on Maui, wave-wise, though not even half as big land-wise. THE BEACH: The sand is soft and white, the waves are usually bigger than normal which is great for boogie & body boarding. The east end is rocky and sports a shallow reef, while the west end is more sandy and swimmable. Lifeguards are on duty. THE PARK: A big grassy field separates the beach and the highway and is popular with kite flyers. FACILITIES: There are 2 restroom facilities at both ends of the park, and showers at the west end. PARKING: There is a small amount of paved spots within the park, or along the highway shoulder. TIPS: Sometimes there are food trucks and vendors selling items along the highway. My friend got some chilled, fresh lychee, $5 for a small bag. There is hardly any shade on the beach except from a few tiny coconut trees, so bring an umbrella. OVERALL: Great for the boogie/body boarder or just people watching. read more

If you are a local here in Oahu its very unlikely you havent heard of Sandys beach! The parking lot is nearly always full with people of all walks of life in hawaii so we usually park in the dirt on the outskirt of the park. The tide is very strong at times and the waves of course are usually always firing! Its alot of fun for experienced swimmers and body boarders as you can see the water is nearly always packed. Perfect place to STUNT! LOL literally I used to come here after getting SHIT FACED from Friday&Saturday Nites to just chill out get a tan and literally HANG from the weekend. Sunday's are THE BEST* You can find all the locals BBQ'n bussin' out the poke, blue tarps, fat tents, and good times! Definately a LOCAL SPOT* so be prepared for that. lol. There's always hella spongers in the water, and when the waves are up, most definately the surfers. Love coming here becaue it def makes me feel local as hell. I'm for sure gona tell my kids and grand-kids about my "Sandy Beach Adventures" lol I especially love hearing the Life Guards yelling at all the Haoles and Non-Local residients/Tourists to get out of the water if they're not from here because they will BREAK THEIR NECKS* lol it's funny as hell, but also the truth. Beautiful beach, but the shore break can be pretty intense. When a friend and I visited, there were warning signs everywhere for just this reason. Probably awesome for surfing, and was really a beautiful spot with convenient parking...but probably wouldn't come here to swim or anything. If you want a local favorite though (which is how my friends and I found this place - it was recommended to us when out in a very "hole in the wall"-type lunch place), then this is the place to go. read more

In these uncertain times and the new "it word" that comes with pandemics: "social distancing", it has become apparent that I had to make this trip to this side of the island. To ensure I don't get sick - at least temporarily and to enjoy mother nature's awe inspiring beauty. I rarely come to Sandy Beach, probably because it just seemed too out of the way. It's nice that at least 2 Bus routes that come out here on a daily basis, namely routes 22 and 23. On a recent Saturday afternoon from Ala Moana Shopping Center trip, I decided to practice social distancing protocols by heading out to Sandy Beach park for the afternoon while mindful about being close to others. I normally don't anyway, on purpose. All these news stories about COVID-19 has gotten to the point where you don't know what's truth and what's fake news nowadays. I'm glad that I got to spend about 1 1/2 hours here before heading home wave watching, people watching, and just looking at my life through the rearview mirror. The ocean is a cruel monster that will kill you, if you aren't careful. The waves often tell you stories about such tales of people who venture too closely and didn't make it out. I found myself sitting on the beach, isolating myself from the beach crowd and away from everyone. I come to the beach sometimes to clear my mind and soul. The ocean / the beach has their ways of calming ones' spirit and uplifting them in more ways than one. For myself though, it's a combination of both. The overall experience here at Sandy's Beach was quite inspirational and soothing at the same time. I know why people come here, although swimming and recreation is important too. I use the beach to help myself make sense of the world and my life. It helps me organize myself and help solve the world's problems, when my mind drifts along with the ocean waves. Mother Nature helps in that regard. It's always nice to see families play together on the beach and in the surf. It reminded me of my younger days before just hanging out on the beach on a permanent basis. The beach tends to do that, among other things. I basically sat here observing and just let my mind wander while people watch before heading out to explore the nearby trails and eventually to Makapu'u up the road. Its physical address is 8801 Kalanianaole Highway in Hawaii Kai. As it is a public beach, there is no admission fee charged. Just come as you are, and you'll be fine. Just remember to bring sunscreen. As far as parking goes, best bet would be to come here early enough to get the best spots. That usually means before 8am - or even before the sun rises too. If you are like me, the bus routes 22 and 23 come through the area. Routes 67 and 69 do not come through the area, but stops at Sea Life Park. You can then transfer to route 22 or 23 heading westbound to come to Sandy's Beach Park. It's about 2.7 miles from Sea Life Park to Sandy's Beach Park. It's not recommended to walk in between as it's a very busy highway on this stretch. For the most part though, Sandy's Beach Park is one of Oahu's beast kept secrets, in terms of scenery and just hidden away in Hawaii Kai, where most people usually do Waikiki beach for convenience. The surf here is stronger here, so you gotta use your best judgement. The beach itself is clean and majestic. There is restroom facilities here as well. Not sure about the public wifi though. For best results, come here before sunrise to see the sunrise. It's quite beautiful. Before the sun sets on the day, one of the best views is on Waikiki beach. Quite epic on a cloudless sky. Sandy Beach Park is a hidden gem and recommended if you're here to enjoy nature's beauty, rekindle your life and kindred spirit, or just enjoy what the day has for you. Either way, come here and enjoy. Be mindful of how rough the ocean can be and you'll be okay. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+ read more

Will someone please tell me the name of the HAWAIIAN ICE SHAVING TRUCK that was there that day.....All it said was Hawaiian Shaved Ice....it was the best Hawaiian shaved ice we ever had. Please tell me the name of your company, I want to give you a proper review.. The rainbow shaved ice was so tasty and cool....Blue Vanilla was to die for. Please please please tell me the name of your company. Oh yeah, about the beach itself....beautiful hidden beach away from the tourist crap. Must visit, but be respectful. A fun local beach This is a really great beach - and also (so it's said) Obama's favourite in Oahu. It is a nice, long stretch of sand....and mostly locals spend their time here. There are lots of parking lots....but everybody (including me) tries to get a spot right at the beach - park backwards, open your trunk and sit on it. Perfect spot to watch people and surfers..... The waves and current here are pretty strong. But that doesn't stop anybody....that's what they come for. Even the kids don't seem to be scared by it. On the left you see more surfers and on the right more boogie boards. If you feel hungry then there's the great Chow Down Food Truck .... if you are lucky and he's actually there. Toilets and showers can be found a bit further away on the left. We had a great time here....spent many hours. Lots of nice people and locals....waving and saying hi. Expect for one guy on one day.....he was stoned (smoking weed in the Pick Up next to us) and got agressive when we took pictures - pictures of the beach, not even of him. I guess there's always that one guy .... Besides that I can't say anything bad about this place. If you want to get away from all the tourists and you want to see were the locals hang out, then this is the place. read more

DO NOT TAKE KIDS THERE! I feel bad rating it as one star because it's nature as it's supposed to be, beautiful, raw and thrilling. When you hear "Sandy Beach" it seems like a fun family spot. I read that president Obama enjoys body surfing there and it looks pretty. My daughter was going to meet me there, but I was getting hot and decided to wade in-despite the lifeguard telling me not to swim there and pointing out that there are "enjoyable beaches a few miles away." Also in spite of all the signs of waves and stick figures on their heads. I just wanted to cool down. Plus, so many people were in the water. I've been swimming in the ocean my whole life-all over the world! I'd be fine, I thought. I waded in so the water was just a little above my knees. I was looking at the beautiful turquoise water when out of nowhere, I was essentially punched in the face and shoved down by a wave. The sand just caved in under my feet. It was like quicksand. I was underwater and trying to claw my way out. I kept getting slammed and pushed back down-face first-in the wet sand that collapsed under my feet every time I tried to stand. The lifeguard was on a speaker telling me to get out "before I got hurt" as though what was happening was my choice. Like I was frolicking and having fun! Eventually, I crawled on my hands and knees and stumbled to my towel. My bathing suit was FULL of sand! It was like I was wearing a diaper full of sand. My hair was crazy and covered in sand. Humiliated, I put my hat and sunglasses on and cried. I will never, ever underestimate the ocean again. The signs-though cartoon-like and silly looking-are FOR REAL! This is NOT a place for swimming! Think of it as a blizzard. Pretty to look at, but you don't want to be swallowed up by it! Shore breaks are real. So are spinal cord injuries. There's a beautiful beach five minutes away. Sherwood beach. Swim there! Ps. 3 days and many showers later, I still have sand on my scalp and a very sore back and neck! read more

Heavy currents, aggressive shore breaks and a few brave souls.. Sandy Beach Park is either your friend or your foe.. Swimming here posed a challenge to those, like myself, who aren't the best swimmers. I honestly hadn't swam in rough waters in over 10 years and I was reminded of this during this short lived expedition. The shore breaks are like nothing I've experienced in my life. They're rapid, powerful and unassuming - Getting knocked off your feet in shallow water is far too common here. And no, it's not a 'light' nudge. It's like taking an intense rip from Clay Matthews full speed and unblocked with a target on your head. The currents were some of the roughest I've encountered as well. Attempting to swim towards shore and being sucked further away is just as common as being swept off your feet. It's crucial you keep your self together mentally - Otherwise, you'll be in heaps of trouble! My main tip of advice in these scenarios is to stay in direct line-sight of lifeguards and be sure to surround yourself with others. I did such.. and was told stories of broken arms, dislocated fingers and shattered ankles. My personal experience in these waters weren't as hectic as I may have made it seem, though, I felt struggling points while wandering off into the deep. With that being said, everyone needs a physical challenge from time to time. The brief 25 minutes spent out there battling waves and unexpected variables was valued and appreciated. I felt and used muscles I haven't used in ages - thank you, Mother Nature. A rekindled respect has been lit. People watching & listening at Sandy Beach is genuinely entertaining.. especially if the waves aforementioned are far too intimidating! Plop up and watch those lionhearted surfers, boogey boarders and body boarders in action! I can't recall how many wipe-outs we saw, but it was definitely in the double digit arena. Pair that with Oooooh's, Ahhhh's and cheers from folks on shore.. and suddenly your on the set of Point Break. Keanu, is that you out there brudda? I laughed, gasped and cheered as though it was a show put on just for us. I forgot how engaging the world could be. That's what happens when you work in the tech world. :( Lifeguards here are of plenty and will blare the emergency horns along with a corresponding announcement if any dangers pose to those on shore or in rough water. Food trucks frequent this spot daily, turning it into a neat little picnic area for the hungry. Parking is sparse, though, after a quick look around you'll find a spot within minutes. Sandy Beach Park is easily one of my favorite Oahu beaches due to the wide-open location, ocean's raw & pure energy, crowd participation / enthusiasm and its close proximity to alternative beaches and activities. One of the most beautiful beach parks on the island. Whenever we have friends or family in town, we always take them here (at least once). They are always impressed and it is always a highlight of their visit. However, even when we don't have visitors, we still enjoy spending family-time here because the beach park has so much to offer: + Big waves for the ocean lovers and thrill seekers. Perfect for surfers, boogie boarders and body surfers. Be warned, however, that the waves are quite rough and the current is very strong. This is not for novice swimmers. + Because of the rough nature of the waters, the life guards are very active and attentive. + There is a slightly calmer area of water (relatively speaking) on the far end of the beach. We usually take the little ones here. Nice area for playing in the sand, exploring and getting your feet wet. + Big, grassy area for kite flying. Our 6 year old twins LOVE it!!! It get's really hot, however, because there's no shade, so bring a hat. + There are usually a handful of food trucks parked at the entrance of the beach park in case you get hungry and didn't pack a snack. Great for Yelping :-) + Lots of parking. + Bathrooms and showers available. There is a second set at the far end of the parking lot, but as of last weekend, it looks like it is undergoing rennovation. Wear sunscreen!!! read more

Worth the stop. Waves were kind of strong for nonswimmers and they didn't have a lifeguard in the area I was in, but still a nice place to safely stand in some water and enjoy the scenery. There was a nice bench for us to sit on and a couple trees for shade. Restroom was clean and a place to rinse before getting back into the car. read more

There is a mummer in my heart, and when I listen to it closely, I can almost hear it say, "I want, I want, I want..." As I venture into the cobalt blue spray of the shore break, I feel, smell, and taste the salt that gives us all life. The water rising over me, turning my skin clammy and covered with chicken dimples. The power of the shore break is a wonder of mother natures might. The sound of the rush, to and fro, resonates in my mind. The ocean is power, mana. I pass the surge and begin to swim out. Breast stroking at first, then rolling over on my back to feel the warmth of the sun on my chest and face. The waves bobbing me. I raise my head up to peer back at the beach and see my solitary foot tracks leading into the water. I watch as a particularly violent wave crashes and erases them from the sandy page. I am alone. Not too keen on venturing far, I tread, and take a deep breath. Plunging myself along the shallows, I glaze my fingertips along the bottom. Holding my breath until I feel that small ack that puts all other thoughts but "oxygen" out of my mind. I push to the surface and begin to ride the tide back to shore. Emerging dripping, but clear of mind, I set myself on my beach towel in my solitude. There is very little wind but I shiver non the less. I lean back, give my body a wiggle molding myself into the beach, and close my eyes. Time slips by... When I turn my head, I see the small shells and coral mixed with the sand, and watch in the distance as two tourist pick through them, assembling them in a vile. Someone is getting omiyage. Somewhere, someone will love and cherish it, then they will put it on a shelf, where one day it will be forgotten. Down the break, surfers have begun to line up, and the waves are up to 2-3. Tourist and local alike are starting to crowd the area, and I reckon it is time to move on. As I shake the sand from my towel, wrap it around my damp lower torso, and walk back up the beach to where I have parked, I realize, my heart has fell silent. Sandy beach is located past Halona Blowhole and before you reach Makapu'u Point Lighthouse. Early is better, but anytime is good. Summer is screaming hot, and there is no shade, bring a beach umbrella. Summer time water temps are plesent, but the cold water invigorates me, crushes me. I write while drinking, and edit sober. Seeing my thoughts on this page feels like dirt in my mouth. Seeking approval is a pitiful thing, I think. Aloha read more

I recommend for a short stop and look around but DO NOT GO WATER. It's probably in the top ten of most dangerous beaches. If you're a tourist, go to watch the locals but don't go in the water. There's nothing more soothing than a breath of fresh air while feeling the natural salt on my skin from the ocean as I stand there with my lungs wide open, ready to intake it all. The detailed shadows of the clouds keep its course, the beige grainy sands on a hot yet bipolar summer season challenge surfers of all levels for the swells and the avid body boarders embrace the experience of the magical tubes. Of course the tourists want in on the action too based on several photos sighted on social media. "This is it!" I love the sounds of the "aaahhs" and the "wows!" from everyone. We're in beautiful Hawai'I nei, living the HI life. I'm not a surfer or a body boarder; however. I frequent Sandy's during the sunrise and an occasional sunset for other reasons. The marked parking lot can handle plenty of cars and some park on the grassy areas of the beach. Please be mindful of the signs and people having BBQ's and tents on these spots. On a perfect windy day, expect to see some cool kites flying amidst the open air. Families and friends gather here on a daily basis to witness the sunrise and capture the dancing lights on the horizon, while the surfers wait for the perfect wave of the season. Photographers of all levels congregate throughout the day to capture the picturesque scene of the waters, the sunrise, and the sunsets. While some linger for the stars to light the skies in hopes it wouldn't be a cloudy night. It's the perfect place for stargazing and to be if you want to get away from the city. Lifeguards are available depending on the time of day. Please follow the beach rules and watch out for signs if the swells are too dangerous to surf. Be each other's life guards and watch for others too. Everyone can save a life. Respect the beach areas and the ocean and never under estimate its power. read more

You MAY DIE if you do not know these waters well enough to take them on, and if the lifeguards are off duty. That said, this is an AWESOME beach for one of two things. 1) Body surfing. or 2) Watching your husband get his bathing suit pummeled off of his body by some seriously high tides. Watch out for the strong rip currents. They will "tear you asunder." No kidding. Or at least it will tear your bathing suit asunder. You better know how to swim and how to enter & exit. Looks beautiful but the strength of even small waves will kick ur butt. People have died here. When in doubt stay out and don't get dragged into the water by thinking u r gunna "stay by shore". She will eat u up n spit u out slamming you on the sand after she holds you underwater. The first time my husband went to Sandy's for body surfing, he was warned by locals against going in without fins. He had them, but it was a good thing people take the time to warn tourists because we always see tourists trying to get in here with floaty tubes. Not good. We go here with the kids and don't go in the water, unless it's just to paddle our feet. It's too rough for us. Farther along, there are tons of tidepools, and one of my kid's favorite things to do is explore the tidepools and try to catch crabs. They usually gather a bucket of hermit crabs, observe them, then put them back. Sea slugs are also plentiful. There are lots of small fish that hide when they see your shadow coming. Once, last year, we saw monk seals hanging out on the beach, and we've seen a sea turtle twice coming into the tidepools to eat plants. You can also access the lagoons between Sandy's and the Makapu lighthouse trails from Sandy's. It's a nice hike. Along the way, you'll see stuff like an office chair shoved into the womb-like overhang of a bush for someone to sit and look at the ocean. Lots of people shore fish here, too, though I haven't personally seen what they catch. Also, the lifeguards are only here until 5. When we go after 5, which we often for after-dinner walks, the sweet smell of marijuana smoke and loud music fills the air from people backed into parking spots to watch the sunset. Late at night (this happened the three times we were there after 10, looking at the waves), people drag race along the highway near Sandy's as well. Spoiler Alert: this is going to be ridiculous. I just wanted everybody to know that I am fully aware of that, but I couldn't bring myself to hit cancel once I started... If you talk to anybody who has ever ridden waves for a while, their main complaint will most likely be about overcrowding at their favorite break. Crowds are a bother, for sure, but the problem isn't necessarily the amount of people in the water, it's the amount of people in relation to the amount of rideable waves, or the Lineup Saturation Point (LSP). This may seem obvious, but the distinction should be made, because it sometimes seems that there are enough waves for everybody on a seemingly crowded day, or not enough waves on another day with only a handful of people. Imagine the lineup to be a solution [colloidal dispersion may be more apt, but just bear with me], where the waves are the solvent, and those who aim to ride the waves are the solute. Every solution has a saturation point -- the point at which a solvent can no longer hold any more solute -- and the same goes for any given surf spot. In the case of LSP, the point at which the waves can no longer accommodate the amount of hopeful wave-sliders is directly proportional to the consistency and size of the swell; and inversely proportional to the amount of tourists/military dudes flopping aimlessly around. Precipitation is what happens when the concentration of a compound exceeds its solubility. When the atmosphere can't hold any more water vapor, it precipitates in the form of rain, sleet, snow, etc; when LSP is exceeded, drop-ins -- the act of catching a wave that somebody else is already riding -- rampantly occur. This is the beach I went to weekly throughout my childhood. Here was sunday brunch with the family, tidepooling, and body surfing. It is a unique beach because of the way that lava rocks formed, and when the tide is high the waves bring in lots of creatures, which include little fishes, crabs, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. They get suck in the rock crevices as the waves crash in, and tada! Tidepools! It provided hours of fun for me as a child, and I still like to take visitors there and make a visit myself to see it when I am home. read more

Beautiful beach I won't forget our conversation in the Ocean swimming and jumping at waves. A lot of weird conversation happens under the sun and really blue clear water. The talks of Past relationships, where do we see our future, etc etc. well conversations really go like this... LOL... "If I was a guy for the weekend id be a hoe. If only men can be a female for 1 yr so they can know what it feels like to have a period, carry a child for 9 months, and breast feed". On a different note, waves can be calm and they can be large. We were told (despite the fact that 3/5 people in our group are lifeguards) that we are not strong enough swimmers to be in the water (with the 100s of locals that are in the water). As I stated in my quick tip, Sandy Beach Park, aka Sandy's is not for those who don't know what they're doing. It's treacherous and I'd even go so far to say it's dangerous so either spectate or vacate and make your way to Waikiki or Ala Moana where you don't have to worry about getting pounded by the ripples. That being said, Sandy's will forever hold a special place in my heart because it's where I learned that my sense of adventure seems to always associate risk. From motorcycling, to shark diving, to jumping out of planes; Sandy's where you can break your back or your neck from the powerful shore breaks, or maybe even worse - and it's on my list of things I love doing. Never mind the white sand beach. Never mind the eye candy watching the brave or some might say insane. Never mind that I could die. Sandy's is cool, fun, exciting, dangerous. Hanauma Bay lot was full so we looked for a beach nearby and ended up here. We came on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't that crowded, especially closer to the lava rocks. It was pretty windy so we decided not to put our tent up. No shade. The waves are no joke, but you can stay close to shore and jump in the waves. Otherwise, you can just enjoy laying out in the sun and watch surfers. Not my fave beach on Oahu, but nice enough. Grab some fast food from Fatboy's, shaved ice or boba with mochi from Kokonuts, or Leonard's malasadas afterwards. read more

I don't love this beach and I don't hate it. Its definitely not my first pick of places to go, but it does make for some fun people watching. What I do love is Tiffany M's Review and I whole heartedly agree. This beach is not the type to go sit with your significant other and enjoy the beach, this beach is not for tanning and this beach is always crowded. This beach however is great for body boarding and getting pounded by waves (if you're into that kind of stuff) I personally never get in to the water, because I do not body board. But my husband who doesn't body board gets in to see if he can take on the ocean. He loves it, says the waves aren't as hard as waimea in the winter but the thing that kills it for him is the strong current. The water is very populated with surfers/body boarders so its hard to find a clear spot anyway to play in the water. As far as sitting/tanning on the beach...while i'm not a young stunna like I used to be, I am not an old crone but I do appreciate courteous people and some peace and quiet, both of which are not to be found here. I always think every experience will be different here but its not. Its always extremely populated with local kids I'm guess varying in range from Jr HS to College that are smoking pot, eating mc donalds and blasting their wanna be gangsta music from their kid cars....ain't nobody got time fo dat! read more

As a Hawaii boy I enjoy the beaches and ocean, however this is one beach I strongly advise to heed caution. The waves and currents are strong and easily can bring you out to sea. The bodyboarders and swimmers in the water make it look easy, but DONT underestimate the power of the ocean in this area. I have personally witnessed two occasions where visitors start out cautious in the immediate shoreline but eventually needed to be rescued out. Having been here on a few occasions, it's a great place to sit back and relax on the shoreline. Enjoy getting your tan instead of being swept out to sea. Parking is usually available and close to shore which is a great plus. read more

Cool beach! Scary to swim at if you aren't a great swimmer as the waves can really pound you. The lifeguards stay on top of it though and give reminders to the tourists to stay out. Once we saw a visitor try to take one of the $2 rafts from the ABC store out on the waves. It was hilarious and sad. But he didn't give up until like the tenth time, pretty impressive. read more

I loved Sandy Beach Park, I really did. The parking was fairly easy - large enough for LOTS of folks to park there. Lots of folks seemed to be locals so I assume this is popular with surfers and such. I took my wife and six year old there several times while we were in Hawaii over Christmas. Waves not too big. We actually walked way over to the right side by the rocks where less people were. It's really a beautiful scenic beach - it's almost exactly what Hawaii looks like in my memories. We went there on Christmas Day this year (2014). While we were there, we met an older gentleman who offered to use my camera and take some pictures of us, so I obliged. We get to talking. Turns out he was there spending Christmas with his wife whose ashes he had scattered three years prior. We looked at some family photos, said Merry Christmas and went about our Hawaiian adventures. It was their favorite beach as well. read more
