- 5 stars for not being family friendly. This is a rough beach, kiddies and lightweights can chill, people watch, AND NEVER EVER SWIM. The water here is srs bzns. I have a kid, and my swimming skills are limited to floating on my back, doggy paddling, and doing that scissor kick thing that GI Joe taught on Saturday mornings. Basically, since I don't enjoy getting my ass handed to me by mother nature, this is not my beach. However.... + 1,000,000 stars for all the eye candy. Local Hottie central here, male and female. Drool. Whatever, it's not creepy cuz I'm a chick, right? read more

Sandy Beach Park - Big waves - Parks Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

Omg! We enjoy our time here so much. One of the best beach to be at in Hawaii. Water is so cool and clear. Beautiful view and quiet. We robot every minute of our times here. This is a must place to stop to relax if you are in Hawaii. read more

10 feet waves crashing less than 30 feet from shore, if that's your thing, then Welcome to Sandy Beach! This is not a beach for beginners. A snorkel and fin will not do here, you need to be a very strong swimmer and have the skills to get through the rough waves. There's a reason of why its called Sandy Beach, cuz you get sand in places in your body that you didn't think was possible. If you're not careful, you can get swept away into the sea just by standing on the shoreline. The waves are unpredictable, but the scenary is breath taking. read more

One of the most beautiful beaches of Hawaii! Waimanalo is such a gorgeous place to be and truly gives you the experience of family. Sandy Beach Park is mainly for surfers that want to "ride the waves." My mom is definitely not someone to go in the water in general and once she tried stepping into the ocean, she fell on her face and got run over by the water it was priceless. Parking was super full when we went. The shores are very strong so I would be very cautious about that. The lifeguards even warn you that once they leave, you have to be careful because there have been a few bad incidents with tourists getting in the ocean too far out. read more

At first thought when we arrived at this beach I saw a sign that read "NO SWIMMING"?! ???? Huh?! We're at a fricking beach! No swimming? Ohhh I get it! You're not going to swimming, you're going to get owned by the water but it was great! I went flying across the beach and slammed right into the sand, but it was all worth it! =) Totally worth the trip for everyone! read more

The best. Beautiful. Absolutely Dangerous. This beach is for people who know what to do in the ocean. The shorebreak is sometimes scary and i've seen non locals almost break their necks. If you don't know Sandy's .... don't go out. read more

Always a MUST when the crew visits oahu. Definitely my favorite beach on the island. 90% locals, and the rest wannabe locals like moi. Waves can pound yer ass if youre not careful. Lifeguards will scold and tell you to get the F$CK outta the water if they see your tourist ass even attempt to go out. SERIOUSLY. Waimea is another fav, but thats a long ass drive to the north shore. Otherwise, great talent to browse. Again, dont go in the water if youre not experienced. You WILL look like a jackass..... read more

More like rocky beach park, because I saw more rocks than sand. I encounter lots of awesome waves near the shore. They weren't big, but there was plenty of splashes. I highly recommend wearing shoes if you're at this beach park because the rocks were hard, sharp, and slippery. I got my camera all wet at this beach from the waves, so make sure you have a weatherproof or waterproof camera if you want to take photos. read more

Sandy Beach Park - Crazy waves! - Parks Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

So this is a first for me: As we walk onto the beach, a friendly lifeguard approaches us: "Hi there! Is this your first time here?" "Yeah, it is." "Well, just be careful since this is the worst beach in the US for broken appendages... "Uh, ok..." "and backs and necks!" "...but isn't that about everything?" "Yeah, so there's another beach down the road and it's so much calmer! If you like, I can tell you how to get there!" I felt she had made some very strong points for the other beach, but my husband thanks her and tells her we're alright. Fact is, I'm not a strong swimmer...I even floundered one time in 5ft of water. My husband pulled me up by my bottom piece and said, "Lan, just stand up." So I can only imagine that my husband had purchased a very generous life insurance policy on me before our trip. Anyways, I chilled on the shore while my husband played in the water. Our guidebook said that this was the most popular beach for boogie boarders. I can see why, since the surf near the shore was quite amazing. Even more impressive, were all the cool maneuvers I saw being done so close to shore. So if you're a strong swimmer and into boogie boarding, this beach is for you. Otherwise, get your tan on and settle down for some fine ppl watching. read more

Aww, Sandy beach! I read on a travel guide that Sandy Beach is only for expert surfers and what not. But if you ask me-- Sandy Beach is freakin' hella fun! Hella locals go here just to chill/swim. My family and I spent all of our free time here. We loved it... One time my cousin and I were weight boarding and we went HELLA far from the shore that the lifegaurd had to CALL us in. I was scared off my ass! but luckily we got back to shore safely! Not as much tourist as Waikiki, i'd go here for some family fun anyday! read more

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A great place to get away from the crowds on Waikiki and see (fewer tourists) and lots of locals hitting the waves. Or, more aptly, the waves hitting lots of locals. Sandy Beach is renowned for its crazy waves and strong ocean currents. Lifeguards are always on their toes shouting warnings (or even telling my husband, who came eagerly with his boogie-board and stuck out as a total tourist, to go find a calmer beach further up the Windward Coast). Swimming is actually not allowed here, but you can dip your toes in the water as you watch the guys and gals who know their stuff get whacked around on the waves. Another plus - the Wahoo fish truck comes here daily (at least, we saw it there 3 days in a row!) and serves up a mean fish taco. read more

I can't think of high school and not also think of Sandy's. waiting for math class to end so we can all pile in my friend's car and get some sun after class. Laying our towels out so we can read our magazines while also casually look at the cute boys body surfing in the waves. Contemplating finally going into the rouch aters, only to chicken out and just dip our feet in. And finally eating a good plate of local food when the truck comes by. Mmm those were the good days.. read more

Stopped by beautiful Sandy Beach to catch some sun before heading to Lanakai. I was pleasantly surprised the beach wasn't too busy and crowded which was a huge plus. Great beach to relax, have a small picnic and get your tan on. We also ended up brown bagging some champagne on the beach. The day we went, the waves were a bit rough and choppy so I just steered clear away from the water. There are public restrooms, showers and an area to change in both women and men's bathroom. read more

This site is beautiful and it's a great place to just spend time watching. The waves look somewhat benign and then when you wade in the water a bit you see what everyone refers to with the strength of the current. It is definitely not for weak swimmers because there are rocks and the flow of water is strong. read more

Great body surfing. Great barrels to ride. Experienced only. Beginers/newbee's just watch please. Sandy's is also known as Break Neck Beach. The shorebreak and tides can be hazardous to your health. If you are not local or President Obama maybe you should just watch. ; - ) A false negative is it's a locals only beach, nothing but trouble. Not so..but as if your visiting a friends house, respect. Tourist keep a eye on your kids. Pay attention to the beach warning signs and life guards. These are very dangerous waters to non-local kids. read more

Another beautiful beach in the North Shore area of Oahu.

Beautiful.

Sandy Beach is a nice wide beach. The parking lot is directly at the beach, so it's very convenient. However, with so many other amazing beaches on Oahu we didn't stay here too long. Anywhere else this would be a spectacular beach, but compared to the rest of Oahu you could probably skip it. read more

Parking is always plentiful at Sandy Beach Park and waves are pretty strong at times. Good for surfing, mostly done by the local residents. Beach itself is clean and sandy and great on a warm day. Certainly worth checking out and walking around. read more

I used to go here a lot back in the day. Not so much anymore with my hecka hectic schedule but definitely good times over here. One of the best bodysurfing/body boarding and small kine surfing on the island. Too bad this place stay over in Hawaii Kai. Kinda a small kine long drive from town and Leeward side but it's all good once your over here and in da water. Awesome place to just chill and enjoy the water, have a picnic, play some outdoor games, and many other things. The waves and tide over here is no joke and definitely not a place for rookies when the water is bumpin. I remember playing football with friends over here all the time whether it's in the sand or on the grass. There area is very wide and spacious. It's right along the way on Kalanianole, right before heading to Sea Life Park/Makapu'u Beach and after passing the blow hole and Haunama Bay. Yelp 365 Challenge #172/365 read more

Truly holds its name for the beautiful sandy beach. Walking distance to the blowhole. We parked and walked along the sandy beach while watching the strong waves hit the shores. Not very crowded. Good place for experienced swimmers to boogie board. It's very entertaining to watch the waves clobber the boogie boarders and relaxing to view the waves. read more

This is the only beach I've visited on Oahu where I did not step foot in the water. This the beach where my skin went from natural island skin to a color my mom would yell at me for being in the sun too long. Sandy Beach Park - Check out the rock bridge - Parks Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

I have a lot of fond memories from Sandy's beach. The beach itself is amazing. The swells are huge, some of the biggest you'll find on the island, the area is beautiful and you shouldn't have too hard a time finding a secluded spot to relax. The ONLY PROBLEM I had with this area is it is very, very local. I went here for the first time with a small group of my friends, also in the military. There were a lot of hard feelings between the locals and the military at that time, so it wasn't the safest place to be unless you were with a group. This is NOT a touristy beach by any means, bring whatever food and/or entertainment you want. There's no jet ski rentals, restaurants, or anything like that. P.S. Beware of this beach when the swells are getting crazy. The first 20-30 feet of water you wade into is mostly rocks and if you misjudge your timing diving under a wave you will get messed up...trust me. read more

Sandy Beach (east shore)= boogie boarders' paradise. Sunset Beach (north shore)= surfers paradise. Sandy Beach, end of september, high waves, full of boogie boarding locals. red flags, too high of waves at this time of year to swim. Got beat up by the waves TWICE! sand everywhere. and then we had enough! But still a amazing local place to visit and sun bathe. read more

Sandy's is my go to slice of beach. It's conveniently close to home and the sun is always brighter out here! Great for lounging and people watching. People get crazy on their skimboards, boogie boards, and funboards. Crowd: 3 It tends to get packed, early! Parking isn't too much of an issue because there's a lot of parking further down the coast line. It might be a little trek, but there is ample parking. Split pretty evenly between tourist and locals. It's a pretty popular spot. Beach: 4 Warm, soft white sand beach. Not a whole lot of beach between parking lot and ocean but I never run into any problems snagging a piece of beach. Break: 3 Not terrific for swimming because the shallow reef. Breaks ultra close to the shore which makes this sucha hot spot for boogie boarding and skim boarders. You risk getting plowed down by the aforementioned when wading in the water to cool off after soaking in some intense rays. read more

I did not have a good experience here. When we got there it was very cloudy and started raining. The waves were too strong. However, I have heard a lot of good things about this beach. Another bad thing that happened to us was that my husband lost his wedding ring in that beach! :(( read more

This is a beautiful beach. However, it isn't a beach for kids. This beach came up when I yelped a beach for kids. The lifeguard advised us not to stay as we had a child with us. Very scenic, but as the name suggests, also very sandy. The lifeguard also told us that it was the "number one beach for broken necks and backs". I am giving it one star for the purpose of me seeking a beach for my daughter to swim in. Otherwise, I would give it full ratings. read more

It's a great place to people watch for someone like me who can't swim really well, but recently I've been going at night to barbecue! You can watch the sunset and see the stars come out. It's a good place for night barbecuing since the parking lot is close to the beach and there are convenient rubbish cans. You still have to bring lamps and stuff, but you wouldn't have to carry your stuff far. There aren't too many bugs, either. Just be careful since I saw a homeless man sleeping in a large hole. You wouldn't want to fall in and hurt him when you walk around in the dark. Since this is a rather secluded area, stick with your group of friends and park near to where you are! read more

Fun place to visit but not a swimming beach for tourists. People watching was better here than anywhere else. It is definitely a see-and-be-seen sort of beach! (I was kind of jealous because I never had a place like this to go to - I just had the mall!! No comparison!) The surfers were good.....and everyone else was crazy! Seriously, I flinched when I saw bodyboarders getting absolutely pounded by the surf. It was definitely worth seeing but, as a tourist, I wouldn't spend a day there. We stopped by and walked around but there is no way could get in the water. And if we got even close, the lifeguard would call us out! (And rightly so!) read more
