This is a review of the retail store only and not the bistro. We have often driven past Sandstone Gardens on our way to Missouri. We have never stopped. Lucky for me, it is open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning as I breezed through Joplin. It's a formidable looking fortress but just be brave and open up one of the massive brown doors. (Entrances aren't really labeled.) I ended up entering through the bistro area. The home decor and kitchen items are maybe a bit pricey but not outrageous. The concrete sculptures (which they make on site) are fantastic. If you want to purchase one, just take a pic of it and they will secure one for you at the check out area. There's also baskets by the check out that you can place all your wares in and no one else can shop through them. But back to the sculptures...they are pretty reasonable and of good quality. If you buy one, you must drive to the back of the property where they make them to pick them up. This would be a five star review (for the retail store) if they had been a bit friendlier and helpful. Maybe we will have time for lunch sometime and up this to five! read more

Really great food, wonderful deserts and the shopping experience is great. But call ahead and reserve a table. The wait can be hours on weekends. Hers my only really complaint. We did show up on a recent Saturday when they were packed and were told the wait was about 45 minutes. Well that was okay because there is so much to see and do shopping there. I love this place and can always find things I wish we had in our house. Interior decorators and people who like interesting decoration things for both inside and outside the home should have a good time exploring this decorating wonderland. However, we came back multiple times after one hour (remember they said 45 min). and were repeatedly told we were next. About two hours after we arrived were were finally seated. I balme the customers a bit, there were many tables with people hanging ut waiting mostly for wife to finish shopping. So basically people would come in for lunch, hand out with family and friends and time up a table for hours. Long after they are done eating they continue to sit there and wait while some of the group goes out to shop. I find thse really rude and surprised that the owners don't suggest to people that they hand out elsewhere. Like the many places to sit outside. I get that it puts the owners in a difficult situation because they want to sell decorator stuff. However, they really need to figure this out and find some way to move people off the tables and hanging out somewhere else. Once seated the food was generally good but we didn't have the best waiter the last time we came in. Constantly forgetting things bringing out things wrong, not refilling water, forgetting table setting after asking several times, etc. Although we will come back as everything is good I won't bring a group, just my wife and I and I will not come without planning on loosing half a day waiting for a table, then service. One of the prettiest places to spend an afternoon. Sandstone Gardens looks like a huge country estate on the outside; inside is filled with some of the most beautiful and unique home decor you'd ever find. Aside from that - and the top reason for my review - is the little bistro. Went here today for my friend's birthday for a nice lunch. They were very busy, but our server did her best to get us accommodated as quickly as possible. We spent some time browsing the shop while waiting. (And yes, bought a scarf and tote bag - very tricky, Sandstone!) Lunch menu is small and mostly sandwiches, but everything is very good here. I had the chicken salad, which has grapes in it (FYI), but the rest of the table got the Pizzano, a warm turkey sandwich with the most delicious sauce on it. I've eaten here many times. The soups are good, the desserts are wonderful. Sandstone Gardens is so quaint and eating here is a real treat. Simple, flavorful cafe food. Perfect for a girls' day out. read more

one of my favorite places to lunch and shop! for shopping they are known for their concrete items. you can buy them right then and there or order what you want. they have amazing home decor items and gifts. I love to see how they display everything. great ideas! the restaurant- great atmosphere, friendly service and outstanding service! most recently we stopped while traveling from tulsa to the lake of the ozarks. my cousin and I had our husbands with us do they did not want to stay and shop but we did enjoy a delicious lunch. I had one of their specials- the chicken pot pie. it was do so good! flaky pastry crust atop of the creamy chicken and vegetables. the salad was so good too. my cousin had a roast beef and Asiago melt sandwich, my husband the philly cheesesteak and my cousin's husband had a pizzano club. we didn't have the desserts this last time but have before and they were awesome! read more

This place is huge. I was unsure what to expect as I have driven past many times in the past though never had the opportunity to stop. I went to the previous location on South Rangeline many years ago and was pleasantly surprised to see a lop eared bunny in the store lounging on merchandise. During this visit we enjoyed sandwiches at the cafe. We each had the pizzano sandwich which was tasty. We had to wait a bit to be seated. They did not look super busy and may have been short a person. The service was good though. My pictures show less than 1/10,000 of what there is to see here. There is so much within their store and gardens. Make sure you have time and are not in a hurry when you come here. Such an adorable little gem on the outskirts of Joplin! My husband took me for lunch one weekday afternoon to this quaint spot, and we had a lovely time. I thoroughly enjoyed my fresh salad, and the dessert that came with the lunch was lovely as well! As a chocolate fan, I wasn't disappointed with the brownie sundae. Although, my husband got the blackberry cobbler and it was much better than I had expected! After our pleasant lunch we wandered around the store for a few minutes before we had to return to work. We plan on coming back again (bringing my mother and/or my mother-in-law) with more time to explore the shop. read more

We ate lunch in the bistro and it was delicious Our server Brittany, who is attentive and informative, answeried all of our questions. She is a good waitress to have serve you. The food, enchiladas and white lasagna was over the top. Very rich and tasteful along with the tea. We added the German chocolate cake and it's to die for. The food is homemade and you can tell from the first bite.If your looking for unusual, different or a simple look for your home, they have it. Prices are reasonable. The bistro inside Sandstone Gardens is a great little getaway. Located in a beautiful country setting and offering a simple but delicious menu for lunch. I love the spring mix salad and Quiche plate, but none of the items on the menu disappoint. Sorry to see the Starbucks kiosk is gone, but the coffee was still delicious. Sandstone Gardens...looks like a great, big, estate kind of thing that was dropped in out of the sky from Europe somewhere. Inside there are a gazillion things you don't need but you covet them for feathering your nest. But the best part is the Bistro, wonderful and varied sandwiches, soups and DESSERTS that are always delicious. Sometimes it takes a little while to get your food but you are (hopefully) enjoying your friends. Last time we went we were under a fan and asked to be moved, we were accommodated graciously. So you can enjoy your lunch, shop awhile and get a nice coffee drink (Starbucks!) and get down the road to wherever your nest is that you have purchased some amazing new bauble. They have nice silk flowers (and I'm not really a fan of silk flowers), garden statuary (no donkeys here!), fountains, furniture, mirrors, kitchen stuff, girly wallets and sandals, even! And some dishes! and smelly soap! and candles! You WILL find something you cannot live without. Now get that coffee and go home. Next time, remember to bring your mom for lunch. read more

There's a supposedly haunted bed and breakfast (kind-of) in Joplin, There's the most amazingly wonderful, locally owned, hipster, carnivore and vegan-friendly restaurant (lookin' at you Instant Karma). There are lots of places to spend a day, if you are close, there are even enough really great places to visit that if luck finds you near Joplin, you should plan a trip into town. Sandstone Gardens is an enormous "house" that's actually a home decor store. There's something for everyone. Sandstone Gardens is what Nebraska Warehouse was for appliances before Nebraska Warehouse was in Kansas City and started selling crappy furniture to NASCAR fans. It's close enough (2.5 hours) that if you wanted to furnish a house and eclectic European cottage was your style, you should take a trip to Joplin. They have statuary, fountains, tables, bookcases, dining chairs, beds, nightstands, dressers, buffets, benches, and ten thousand or so square feet of home decor. And the price is right. Quality pieces are pricey (you can spend 5k or more on large pieces) and trinkets are priced as trinkets (found a ceramic rabbit on a turtle for $7). You could spend a lot of time weaving your way in and out of the little niche's if the style is yours. Again, there's a very distinct style here. It's not modern, it's not victorian antique. It's very much English country estate. Have fun. And don't forget to drive by Bonnie and Clyde's house. read more

WOAH! How have I just noticed this place!?! I could walk around here for hours and not see the same thing twice. Is that a good thing? Not sure, it's definitely overstimulating and FULL of house and garden decor of all kinds (except modern contemporary). Come with a handful of large dollar bills because it is super pricey! When we travel up I-44 to Branson we always plan to stop at Sandstone Gardens to eat lunch! We discovered this Bistro 10 years ago when we stopped on a lark out of curiosity. We were not disappointed! The bistro (inside this humongous mansion-like facility) is quaint and very decorative. The diverse menu includes specialty sandwiches, soups, salads and various unique dishes on a rotating basis. The chicken salad is super scrumptious; my chicken enchilada and tortilla soup was to die for. Service was friendly and prompt. Don't forget to try one of the fantastic desserts. We loved the homemade coconut cake. After eating be sure and look around in this magnificently decorated structure. This cafe is in a store off the highway in such a random spot that you will be wondering if you are lost the whole way there. The cafe hours are pretty brief, so plan ahead! The food is good and the service is very good. I enjoyed my salad very much. My dessert was not quite as exemplary. It had a bit more style than substance. Sadly I never got a chance to shop here. I drove by the store on my way from Tulsa to St Louis and the next day on our way back my husband and I were going to stop by and see if it was worth driving 2 hours another day to shop. We just bought a nice big house in Tulsa and could fill a uhaul full of items but it will never be from this store. I have never encountered such rude people in my life. Everyone made sure to let me know they closed in 10 minutes and hustled myself and others out the door even though it was not 5 o'clock. I was treated more like a problem than a customer. If I owned a business that closed at 5 you can bet I would stay until the last customer left. If I could give a zero I would. read more

What a disappointment after hearing some good things about it. Went for the heralded meatloaf which must have been old as it was a slice of mush. The moved onto the german chocolate cake I read raves about, but it too must have been old as it was dry. My guest's sandwich was ok , but nothing to brag about. Then we moved on to look at the attached store and ran into the snobbiest I've encountered this side of NY. All-in-all... Do not expect to have hords of staff waiting on you quickly this is a casual bistro relaxed lunch establishment not an assembly line pushing people in and out turning tables. You may wait for a table you may wait for staff to take your order and wait for food and dessert and your check. You go to these similar places to eat visit relax and enjoy good food wine coffee and socialize enjoy the beautiful building furniture pictures all for sale it's an experience. If you're impatient, in a rush wanting a feed trough to eat out of with mountain of food this is not for you. They have large concrete tables for large groups which many groups use which every dinner knows large parties take time to serve. My favorite is the enchiladas special they have had for years with or without dessert its around 12.95 without dessert and 14.95 with dessert prices subject to change obviously. The corn succotash is sweet and unique and muffin is wonderful and mouthwatering I could eat a dozen of them if offered and the chicken enchilada is wonderful always extremely hot (hot plate) container. They used to have two enchiladas now only one but more than enough food...again great food and unique atmosphere it's the entire dining experience verses fast assembly line establishments restaurants so you know what to expect. If you like tearooms and small cozy beautifully decorated soft lighting relaxed lunch to eat drink and visit or a large group of adults to get together for a birthday this is a great place...I always see large groups of women eating together for birthday or church groups social groups and large families many couples...they do have children menus however my personal opinion is this type of establishment is not great for children who are typically impatient fidgety and there is lots of stuff that's tempting to children to touch that's for sale. read more

Had a great piece of German chocolate cake and my husband had the Reuben said it was "good". I'm a local and have been to Sandstone Gardens several times. We always enjoy lunch in the bistro, but there's one staff person who is shockingly rude. I don't know if she's the owner or just acts like it, but she was so rude today I won't be back. This is not the first time I've encountered her rudeness, but it's definitely the last. Customers should also know that this place is not suitable for wheelchairs. The only entrance without stairs is in the back, very hard to get to and there are stairs inside that you have to navigate around. The bathrooms also have very old, very low toilets that are not ADA compliant. read more

I have visited the gardens several times and purchased several lovely things. I have also enjoyed eating in the bistro. On nearly every visit I observed the owner ( a woman ) being very rude to customers to the point of making me cringe ! I don't know why someone acts the way she does when the issues involved were very trivial. The business is unique and beautiful . Just got home from Sandstone Gardens! We ate in the Bistro, had an awesome meal (Reuben Trio-$17.00 including tip and the waitstaff was very attentive. The food was great and the atmosphere is very eclectic and unique. Most of the "pretty" things were very pricey but they also have some things that are affordable. My family just got home from eating lunch at Sandstone Gardens. We decided to go there because some of our family was from out of town and we wanted to all go somewhere special. Two people in our party decided to order the special, which was a 2 Chicken Enchilada plate for $12.95. We also had 3 toddlers that ordered the Mac and Cheese, which were brought out about 5 minutes after the rest of the plates had been served. We all waited until the toddlers received their meal and then started eating. This was a little bit frustrating but not a huge deal While we were eating, we noticed that both of the 2 chicken enchilada plates that our party ordered had only 1 enchilada. We brought this to the attention of our server and she told us that they recently changed the special from 2 enchiladas to 1, but they put 2 enchiladas worth of meat inside 1 tortilla. This answer didn't seem satisfactory to us because it was simply 1 normal-sized enchilada, so we asked to speak to a manager. While we waited for the manager (about 15 minutes), we finished our meals and started to eat our dessert. Finally, the floor manager came to our table and told us exactly the same thing as the server, and emphasized that she didn't have the authority to do anything about it. So we requested to speak to her manager. She said that was fine but we would have to walk over to her desk which was in the shopping area of the attached store. So my brother and I walked over to the store manager and explained our frustration with the situation. She offered no sympathy and reiterated exactly what the floor manager had told us. The only solution that she offered was to cook us each another enchilada (keep in mind this is after everyone had eaten their meals and already had dessert..we were all ready to go and felt that we should just receive a few dollars off of our ticket because we didn't get what was advertised on their menu board). We both felt a little insulted that this was her response. She said that is the only thing she was authorized to do. So we requested to speak to her boss. She called in the owner (I believe) to speak with us (By this time, my brother and I were getting pretty frustrated with the whole situation and couldn't believe that 2 managers didn't have the ability to take care of a customer). The owner came out and again offered no sympathy for the situation (which was all due to the false advertisement on their menu). The owner offered no solution to the situation. This really angered us. I have personally worked in the customer service and food industry and have never encountered something like this. She became very defensive and proceeded to say, "what do you want me to do about it"? At this point, I said I would like to receive 1/2 off the enchilada plate because I only received 1 enchilada instead of the advertised 2. She said, "fine". As we were walking over to the register to pay, I said to the owner that I couldn't believe that this is how she would treat a customer. She replied, "Do you have any more insults"? I said, "Ya know, this is the first time I have been here, and it will definitely be the last". She replied, " that's fine". As the waitress ran my card, the owner circled back around and asked me if I was from the area. I said I did indeed live nearby. I could tell at this time that she may have finally realized how stupid and mishandled this whole situation had become. I signed my receipt and we left. read more

Worst lunch ever!! Had the white Lasagna, and only ate about a fourth of it. Swimming in cheese, alfredo sauce was very salty, maybe I am just used to eating lighter, and this was a poor choice on my part. Sliced, toasted white bread on salad plate and lasagna plate.... dry, unappetizing. Dessert , blackberry cobbler was equally disappointing. Crust was like shoe leather, and there wasn't one intact berry in entire piece! The server was really pleasant, which is why I gave review one star. read more

I was at the Massachusetts brimfield antiques flea market and turned the corner and wow was I amazed-- tons of statues and fountains brought all the way across the country for a flea market!! And direct from the manufacturer-- the sales guys were low pressure and willing to work a deal with us for two fountains we bought !! They loaded and packed the fountains in the back of our vehicle with Care and concern and then explained how to take care of them in the cold and snow !! We so love our new fountains and the great price and easy install-- it took me ten minutes to flatten the ground and then install !! Definitely would recommend for great price and help!! Can't wait to see them again in brimfield in the summer with my statue of a Labrador !! read more

I would advise against shopping at Sandstone. My mother, sisters and I have been shopping at Sandstone for years. We live an hour away but when family came to visit this week we all made the trip to visit Sandstone again. We were all so disappointed with our treatment that we will never go back! We noticed that a few areas roped off with signs that said "due to theft and people using beds as changing tables these areas are closed. Please ask an employee for assistance." This seemed strange but we all kind of laughed about a store that would keep customers from shopping because they assume we are all going to steal bedding. The real problem was that we seemed to be followed by employees. They would answer questions that we were asking each other, and stand a little too close and just look at us. It was very strange, and made us all uncomfortable. When we had all had enough and decided to leave I decided to go and ask one of the employees about our treatment. I found an employee and told her that we were leaving but that we had felt as if we were being followed throughout the store and before I could even finish my sentence she stopped me and said she would get the manager. She did call the manager who came over to speak with me. He did not introduce himself, he did not ask if he could help me, he did not say a word. He just walked over and looked at me. I explained that we had felt uncomfortable and that I wanted to understand. He said they had "a large investment", so I asked if this was their normal practice. He said it was. When my brother said that it "felt unwelcoming" he said he "would respect our decision not to come back." It was shocking to say the least. I have never been treated so rudely. This is clearly a store that not only doesn't care about their customers but is actually scared of them. Save yourself the trouble and shop somewhere that wants your business. read more
