Nothing can stop the library. not even a car ramming thru the front door. Despite that, they were boarded up and open for business.

The East End Richmond Library has to be the only library with a metal detector to walk through and…read morea security guard. Then after being there for a few minutes I saw why. The people there were louder than necessary. Talking as if they were at home. Listening to music on the headphones attached to the computer but so loud everyone could hear. Then the librarians try to ask the people to be quiet and that doesn't work. This library is minutes from home but convenience isn't worth the noise and chaos.

The librarians are super friendly and willing to be of service, there is great programming for the kids, myself and my teens have enjoyed opportunities to volunteer and teach there, it is a place of refuge for some when the weather is severe, there are classes for adults, and I remember it being even noisier before the computers, because it was filled with KIDS that were always, always welcome and catered to! BTW~there hasn't always been a security guard (who is also very helpful and kind!), but for a long while there has been a metal thing at the door that beeps if someone has books that haven't been properly checked out. I could be wrong, but I do not believe it is a metal detector. Please come give it another look with new eyes to really see the beauty that's going on.

This is different…read more Glendale is one of the National Cemeteries laid out in a circle with a flagpole at the hub. For that reason, it doesn't have the same impact of the straight lines of white markers. At least at first glance. If you look closely, however, there's still some symmetry. It forces the viewer to leave behind the orderly analysis of rows and instead evaluate the circle and what it represents. The circle isn't perfect. I suppose it could be if those who laid it out had planned it. It's a disrupter. Because there are a lot of burials from the Civil War era, with the battlefield not far down the road, the unevenness of the circle is likely a testament to how unplanned things were at the time. It's a pretty setting, though. Not many homes, a lot of open space and old, large trees. The cannon, sitting with the flag at the center documents the burial numbers. Seeing that and then the circle of white markers and the map of the battle that started it all, is a must for anyone with an interest in history. It's an unusual setting

I met two very informative guides here, who ironically I would meet the next day at the Civil War visitors center at Tredegar. The visitors center also has a small museum of battlefield artifacts. I didn't examine the cemetery closely, but you can see the gravestones of soldiers who lost their lives at Malvern Hill.
