On Easter weekend in 2007, I had made my way up from London through some major train reroutes to watch Manchester City play Charlton Athletic. By the time the match ended, the last train back to London had departed. With nowhere to stay for the night I desperately knocked on the door of Hatters. They were sold out being a Bank Holiday weekend, but found me a spot in one of the 18 person mixed dorms (maybe it had been freed up by someone trapped in London, I hope they had similar luck). My other choice would have been the transient hotel at the end of their street - and I shudder to think what might have happened there. The location of Hatters is unbeatable. It's just a short walk away from Manchester Piccadilly. And there's a 24-hour chippy less than a block away. It's not in the heart of Manchester's nightlife or anything (which was almost a good thing for sleeping as the club kids stayed elsewhere), but it's pretty close to the Piccadilly Gardens station on the GMPTE. Beyond that, this is one of the most social hostels I've ever stayed at. They have a very active (and very large) common area near the front desk. Even an introvert like me managed to meet fellow travelers over copies of the papers. There is only one major issue with this hostel. The bathrooms are often on different floors from your room. Walking down stairs to shower wasn't necessarily a good time (especially since Hatters is built inside of an old hat factory making it a bit drafty). Security is a bit tight at night and all three times I've stayed here, I've found the night receptionist a bit surly. However, day reception has always been friendly and knowledgeable and the hostel has even prepared a self-guided tour of Manchester's musical landmarks. I would definitely stay here again in Manchester. Though being older now, a private room with a bathroom might be tops.

Your room was…read moredirty and falling apart, the bathrooms smelled disgusting and had no hot water, the staff were rude, and your bed was hard as a rock and sported probably-unwashed sheets. After a cold shower in the morning, you hop a train to Manchester and check into the hostel you've booked for the night. It's is a quick walk from the train station, and you find the lobby gleaming and staffed by smiling people. They invite you to use the common area kitchen anytime, day or night, and encourage you to help yourself to free tea and toast. They also give you tips about the coolest places in the city to check out. When they show you to your room, you find that it's spotless, and the bed is actually kinda comfy. The en suite facilities are also gleaming, AND there's hot water! Have you suddenly arrived in Heaven?! Nope, just a place called Hilton Chambers. I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend it to anyone visiting Manchester!

The other nice thing it's that they have free toast at every time. My boyfriend and I arrived on Friday so the price of the room was £70 it's expensive, but we are only going to stay for 2 nights and we really want a place close to the center. The bedroom it's very spacious, and the bathroom really really big! The beds are amazing, really comfortable. For a southamerican couple this is an awesome place the only "but" is the price!!!

Hostile reception I stayed there 2 weeks and others I met said the same some reception would rather chip a tooth than smile and say hello, not just to me to others as well, I paid £30 for breakfast but was denied entry because of a technical error on their website Manager "Yonko" was incredibly rude and ignored my medical need (epilepsy/medication timing) to stick to a rigid "policy." Which could literally have caused me to have a seizure as I was highly stressed and that can cause a seizure due to her behaviour and you need food b4 u take pills. "People Before Profits" slogan nah mate , they chose a few pounds over a guest's health and basic human respect. Avoid if you value decent service with decent human beings as managers - the rest of the staff - amazing . I am sooooo pissed off the way they treated me - made me feel like I was a criminal simply for asking for food I paid for and yes you told me I could ring customer service after I told you my phone doesn't work and I have to wait to get paid for that which was the next day - like how the heck will that help me Yonko - seriously are you an alien or some shit? Coz that ain't human behaviour !!!! I hope you either learn emotions coz that's where you give a shit or go work with the morgue as they don't have to feel there

Cool decor and cool music- ranging from New Order to alternative . Menu was legit British pub bar food - pies, burgers, fish and chips etc. But lemme tell ya their haddock fish and chips was one of de best I've ever had to far. A large more than generous portion battered and fried perfectly. Imma steak fry cut girl and their chips were delicious ! - thick cut, the way I like them and fried with a delicate crispy outside. We did have to ask for some ketchup. I thoroughly enjoyed the side of mushy peas- seasoned lightly, partially mush with partial full size peas. The steak and ale pie was delicious. Drizzled the yummy gravy all over. Order food at bar, they'll bring food to your table when ready. Great food, reasonable pricing for generous portions! Cool vibes

It was conveniently located within walking distance of central Manchester with a variety of shops and pubs. Our room was very clean, and it seemed as though everything was fairly new and well kept. I liked the unique touches the hotel had as well, such as a vinyl record player, records, and a few books placed here and there to enjoy. It was also very quiet in our room, which, at the time of booking, I was skeptical of considering it was above the pub. The breakfast that I had at the pub was also very good and the service was very hospitable, both from the pub and hotel hosts. The only criticism I have is that the water in the shower kept going from warm to cold, which during the winter is unpleasant. Also, the internet was fairly slow, more so during the evening hours, which I attribute to the higher volume of people possibly using the WiFi. However, overall, the Abel Heywood is a place I would definitely recommend to others as well as visit again.
