Listen, you can't really afford to be picky on an island where there are only two restaurants. Both restaurants, however, are rated quite well on Yelp. Truth be told, I had actually been leaning toward Dykarbaren for some arbitrary reason I can't remember until they told me that they would be closed on the Swedish National Day (6 June) and recommended Sandhamns Värdshus when I tried to make a reservation through email. I highly recommend making a reservation for lunch. You're probably taking the 9:30 a.m. boat that leaves from Strändvagen in Stockholm that arrives at Sandhamn at 11:40 a.m. -- just in time for the lunch rush, so don't get stuck queueing behind everyone who was on your boat at this restaurant. We ate in their upstairs dining hall, which felt like a cozy bed & breakfast. Munching on the complimentary bread (god, what I would done to bring a carry-on full of Swedish bread back home...), I ordered the fried herring with mashed potatoes, lingonberries, and melted butter for 139 SEK or approximately $17 USD. I had already eaten the exact same dish in Stockholm (I'm assuming that this is a quintessential Swedish meal) and this tasted just as good, although be forewarned that there are quite a number of bones still left in the herring. You can't go wrong with choosing Sandhamn as your Stockholm archipelago destination, so make it a perfect island getaway by eating at Sandhamns Värdshus for lunch. You'll need the energy to thoroughly explore everything Sandhamn has to offer before sundown. read more

Amazing food and charming old building, five stars from me. Bf and I ordered the porkbelly dish and the fried plaice dish. Both were amazing, and the plaice was a whole fish! Lightly seasoned and veggies were tasty. The porkbelly though was one of the best I've had! And that means a lot since I live in LA and have had a lot there. The staff was very helpful as well with our questions from the food to the history of the building, will definitely dine here again if we get the chance :) read more

The Swedish lager was excellent. The fennel fish stew was incredible. I had a fish casserole that was great. Wasn't sure to make if it at first, but it was another excellent dish. The menu was written above the bar. Not a lot of items to choose from but between the stew and the other fish dish, it was an excellent choice. Walking distance from hotel as well. Atmosphere was warm, candle lit, not fussy and a nice crowd of ppl. You have to order at the bar & they deliver to your table. read more

This place is nice, although the menu isn't too extensive. There's indoor as well as outdoor seating, and it's nice to have the options. You order at the counter, then your food gets delivered to you. I got salmon wrapped in plaice with vegetables and boiled potatoes, and it was alright. The salmon was super salty, although the plaice was good. The vegetables were drenched in oil, and the potatoes were fine (you can't really mess up boiled potatoes...). There was also a big lump of mayonnaise sauce, which tasted fine except they served way too much of it. I wish the portions were larger for the price we paid for it. It's one of the few restaurants to eat at on Sandhamn, but I would suggest waiting to get back to Stockholm if that's where you're coming from to eat a meal. read more

This review is specifically for the pub portion of Sandhamns Värdshus: We took a boat out to Sandhamn today and the Rick Steves guide mentioned to go here for lunch for their specials. A nice Swedish pub with not too much flare. Specials included fried herring with mashed potatoes, cod with curry sauce, and pork with sliced potatoes. We shared the first two; both dishes were very well done (lots of food for only 200kr total.) The mashed potatoes were the best I've actually ever had, herring was a bit boney but that was too be expected I guess, and the curry sauce was a little heavy on the mayo, but it worked out with the dish. We would have stayed longer but we had a lot of touristy things to do and not too much time to do it. Probably won't be back to Sandhamn ever, but if I am, I'll end back up here too. read more
