I was just as surprised to learn that the famed hat-maker once called the small town of DeLand, FL home. I happened to be visiting during peak manatee season and so had the privilege of being able to still enjoy the mansion during its special holiday tour season. During the holiday tour, each room of the mansion has a unique theme to it that you get to learn all about from your helpful docent. Not only do you get to the enjoy the wonderful story of that room's decorations theme but the history of the home and family is wonderfully blended in. I'm told that obviously during the regular historical tour you dive deeper but I left learning waaaaay more about the Stetson family than I ever expected (or knew). The home is privately owned and you the love and passion the new owners have for the historic property is evident in every room. We even had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners (the super sweet and DeLand native, Kayla) I was surprised to learn she had even created many of the decorations herself that adorned the opulent rooms in the mansion. The Stetson Mansion is a great example of one of the many historical gems tucked away in Florida small towns that you can stumble upon when exploring the state. Whether you're doing the regular history tour or holiday tour, you're sure to have a fabulous visit to the Stetson Mansion.

From its impressive size to the thoughtful, hands-on amenities, it's easily one of the most welcoming and resource-rich public spaces we've encountered. As a parent of a toddler, I especially appreciate the expansive kids' area. It's filled with engaging materials, from early reader books to sensory toys, pretend play stations, and a generously sized indoor play zone. My child loves building with large Legos, exploring the dollhouses and kitchenette, and tinkering with pretend tools at the workbenches. The wooden train tracks are fun too -- though you'll have to bring your own train engine! The variety here is outstanding, making every visit feel fresh and exciting. The library's offerings go far beyond children's resources. There's a remarkable adult STEM innovation area housed in a dedicated space donated by Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. It features sewing machines, a 3D printer, vinyl cutter, and more. Most equipment requires appointments (often booked up about a week in advance), but once you're in, the possibilities are inspiring. One of the staff members gave us an incredibly thorough 30-minute tour -- the best I've ever had at any library -- marked by passion, knowledge, and genuine hospitality. At least once a month there is a free public concert...the genre of music can vary. I've been to a Barbershop Quartet concert here which I thoroughly enjoyed. But I see posters in the library every time I'm there promoting the upcoming concert. For people who use Votran, the bus stops right in front of the library. They also have a variety of events each month.

There are actually two courthouses close to each other in this little town. One where all the business happens and the other which is historic(it seems that it might be used for something still but I'm not sure-it does have some cute and quaint things around it though). We were in the first courthouse for the wedding and nearby the other for photo opportunities. The wedding courthouse has a separate room just for ceremonies. And surprisingly, no appointment needed! You just show up and get married. I was both surprised by the no appointment thing and that they had a separate room specifically for the ceremony. We walked around the area for a few hours and probably would've walked around more if other plans weren't on the agenda.

Yes, we are lucky…read morethat we have the bay that gives us beautiful sunrises as well but they are not wide open without something in the distance like ahhh Tampa. I love coming over to the east coast to explore our wonderful state but honestly it's the sunrises that pull me in. Depending on where you are along the coast line can dramatically change the view. The sounds of the crashing waves are so peaceful and relaxing. Though a little chilly this morning, it wasn't so bad to watch with the ocean breeze on my face. Good thing about our "winters" here... no tourists on the beach getting in the way of photos and only a few locals walking the beach. Beautiful sunrises are the best way to start the day.
