Our son has Down syndrome and in addition to academic tutoring, Mira has helped to make sure his IEP goals are appropriate and being met. She has a working relationship with his teachers which allows open communication between all of them to make sure his academic needs are met and she is able to support the classroom work. I don't think his elementary years would have been as successful as they were without Mira. We are so thankful to have her as a part of our team and family.

My review for Sylvan is mainly negative. I think the big problem is that the lady who sold us on…read morethe program set forth high expectations on their part and kind of set us up for failure. Plus we spent over $3000. Ouch! First off, my daughter only tested having difficulties in reading. She was actually coming in at early first grade in math on their assessment. Tutoring was only recommended for reading because of this. We continued to work on math at home, but when we got her beginning year assessment it says she is significantly behind and failing to meet benchmark expectations. Uh, what's wrong with your assessment? Then for reading, we were guaranteed that she would be reading fluently by the end of the summer; we asked what we should do to assist the process, they said absolutely nothing. We were told that all the work would occur at Sylvan. I asked again because this sounded too good to be true. flash forward to 2 weeks after discontinuing Sylvan after 3 months of tutoring sessions and her progress report in reading from school is hideous, she is not even marked as progressing toward benchmark, but substantially behind. The reason I partially blame them is because if we had also worked with her at home using their strategies, she probably would have progressed further. Also, do not make promises or guarantees you can't keep. She is in our eyes doing better (sounds out phonemes better), hence the 2 versus 1 star, but definitely not what we expected.
