FORT SANDERS HISTORICAL MARKER…read more Nothing remains of the site known as Fort Sanders. Just a few years following the war, homes were being built on this historical site. However, I was determined to locate the historical marker and stand on the site that serves as a reminder of this famous . So as we are following the address in the GPS, we see nothing. We are clearly in a residential area and I know that I am looking for a marker. As traffic starts to back up, I decide to just get out and walk. I'm looking all over and eventually catch up to the car because there was nothing at the indicated address As we turn the corner, I see a sign. OMG, I tell my husband to pull over quickly and I literally jump out of the car. SCORRRRRRRRRRRRRRE!! I was so excited and a bit shocked to realize that the markers and monument are located in the most random spot you could ever imagine. It is literally in a mixed use area next to a side walk. If you didn't see the specific signs that actually border this landmark, you might assume that this is just a large misplaced rock. Fort Sanders has an important place in history because it represents a significant battle in Civil War history, and especially the city of Knoxville. On November 29, 1863, approximately 180 men were killed while hundreds more were injured during a battle that only lasted for 20 minutes. Next time you drive or walk by that big rock, THINK about that. ***The stone marker was erected by the Knoxville Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy on November 29, 1914. It is inscribed with the following words: Nor wreck, nor change, nor winter's blight, Nor Time's remorseless doom, Shall dim one ray of glory's light That gilds your glorious tomb.

She told me she's been here awhile - not as long as the library which opened in 2000 or 2001. They will be moving to a larger location in the near future! It's not a big library, but it's cozy, and has lots to see & do. There's comfortable chairs by the front door, to read or recharge electronics - cords provided! Around the corner are books, DVDs and yarn for sale - reasonably priced. I purchased 2 children's books for a dollar for our soon to be one year old nephew. Computer stations are available if you need a computer. Books in Spanish and a large children's section are impressive. By the circulation desk are signs with information on a scavenger hunt for kids and various local activities. They even had free fresh grown tomatoes on the day we visited (7/12/24!). We don't live in the area, but if we did, we'd call this library branch home!

Dandridge, Tennessee was founded in 1783 and named for Martha Dandridge Washington. It is the…read moresecond oldest town in the state and has served as the county seat of Jefferson County since its creation in 1792. Early settlers were drawn by the French Broad River, and the town quickly became a hub for stagecoach and steamboat travelers, with taverns and inns that still stand today. Jefferson County, named for Thomas Jefferson, was carved from the Southwest Territory and grew rapidly with Scots-Irish pioneers and Revolutionary War veterans who farmed its fertile valleys. Both the town and county were deeply affected by the Civil War, with skirmishes at Dandridge in 1863, and later by the Tennessee Valley Authority's construction of Douglas Dam and Cherokee Dam during World War II, which reshaped the landscape and economy. Despite threats of flooding, Dandridge was saved by a protective levee. The courthouse was completed in 1845 in the Greek Revival style. The two‑story building was assembled with hand‑made bricks, a wooden cupola, and a distinctive roof built entirely without nails, showcasing the craftsmanship of mid‑19th‑century builders. Its durability is remarkable: unlike many Tennessee courthouses, it has never suffered a major disaster, meaning county records dating back to 1792 remain intact. During the Civil War, it was used as a hospital, and in 1957 it became home to the Jefferson County Historical Museum, which preserves artifacts ranging from Native American tools to Civil War relics and even the 1806 marriage bond of Davy Crockett and Polly Finley. The building is still in active use though secured on a Saturday morning. There is plenty of street parking and there is a parking lot nearby on Gay Street. I'm a medical student that travels the country doing rotations in different hospitals. Some days the staff were nice and other days, they didn't want to be bothered. The majority of the tables are not close enough to electrical outlets to plug in your laptop. For the first couple of days, the staff allowed me to check out a power strip. Today for some reason the librarian (Sherry) had a chip on her shoulder and would not let me check out a power strip nor would she allow me to move the table a couple of feet so i could plug in my laptop. I had to leave and find an other library.
