Internationally renowned South African sculptor Lionel Smit returned to Providence in the form of…read more"Morphous," his bronze and steel sculpture on display in Kennedy Plaza. Lionel Smit's MORPHOUS is a piece that evokes a question of time, of past and future, and the balance point at which his country found itself at the time of the sculpture's creation in 2014, one year after Nelson Mandela's passing. In 2014, South Africa embarked upon yet another chapter, a post-Apartheid and post-Nelson Mandela South Africa, a future South Africa. This "double-vision" is a foretelling, and an acknowledgement of what has already passed and an anticipation of what is still to come. The two figures are charged with an emotive and gestural energy, a hallmark of Smit's evocative work. Viewers familiar with Ancient Roman mythology and iconography will undoubtedly think of Janus, the double headed deity of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. It is a powerful message of representation to consider this reference to Janus when depicting a young Black woman. Every time I walk past it, the powerful softness of the sculpture makes me stop and enjoy its beauty and its message. A great piece for the downtown area of Providence.

"Head in the Clouds, Feet on the Ground" is a beautiful mobile sculpture by Jerry Ehrlich located…read moreat the S Water street end of the Providence Pedestrian Bridge. A while back, this sculpture was located outside City Hall, but it was moved to the S Water street for more exposure. The open air location allows for the mobile sculpture to be seen at its best as the winds around the river make the "clouds" spin constantly and freely. The title of the sculpture, 'head in the clouds feet on the ground,' reflects the intersection of creative inspiration and practical application that are both required to make things happen to achieve insightful growth and the thoughtful inspired change that we all continue to see in our beloved City of Providence. The high polished swirl finish of the clouds floating and spinning on the striding forward solid black legs is an eye catching, humorous, but thought-provoking sculpture that is secured to a one ton precast 6"x4'x7' concrete slab to insure stability and allow for months of visual animated interaction. It's now a nice landmark of the city of Providence.

The restoration of the Oakland Beach Carousel is still progressing slowly but surely. The fund…read moreraising event last month was a huge success and the carving and painting of the horses continues to proceed. New horses, recreated from the old, historic photographs are being worked on by skilled and dedicated volunteers. The carousel still has years to go before it is completed but steady progress is being made. Hopefully, before too many years go by, Oakland Beach will have a replica of the 28 horses and building that once graced the the shores.

Did you know that the 2 coasts are also bound by 2 Giant Forks? One is standing upright & the other one is standing upside down. You've heard that expression take a right or left at the Fork in the Road. Well they've taken that geographical driving instruction, that's also a culinary eating utensil & turned it into a wooden statue. This is one of The Secret Hidden Gems of America that most people have never been to or even heard about before. The Giant Fork in the Road is 11 foot tall & is located in Westport Massachusetts which is about an hour outside of Boston. This Funky Flatware Art Piece was built in 2010 by Tom Schmitt. The 11 Foot Tall Giant Wooden Fork resides at the intersection of River & Old Harbor Roads in Westport. It is made out of white pine & painted silver to resemble metal. Tom's wife Kate was totally behind the project as well. Now as Cool as this sculpture is, they do something Special for the Holidays here. On the 4th of July they topped the Fork with a 6 Foot High Hot Dog. On Valentine's Day it's decorated with hearts. On Christmas it wears a Santa's Hat. We Americans Love our Wacky Road Side Attractions! LOL! Now the Fork Saga doesn't end here, it continues onward. If you travel West my friend for a mere 3,000 miles, well 2,986 miles to be exact, you will stumble upon the other Fork in the Road on the West Coast. The Pasadena California Statue stands at 18 feet tall with its prongs standing downwards. So the West Coast Giant Fork is Straight Down; The East Coast Giant Fork is Straight Up. The Fork Saga doesn't end there it continues onward again. There are some other Giant Forks around the country located in San Diego, Kentucky, Oregon, New York & the largest one is in Missouri. They all have their individual stories that need to be told by someone. So if you're in the Massachusetts/ Rhode Island area check out this Fork in the Road spot. Also to make it worth your trip, there's a great ice cream shop about 15 minutes away. It's called The Eskimo King in Swansea MA. It has over 350 flavors of ice cream & has been dishing out sweat treats since 1957. They also have a special retro mascot. You can read my review & more details of that place as well. Now since I visited here in Westport word is the Fork sculpture was stolen but luckily it has been recovered in Rhode Island. The Police are investigating & The Fork Bandits are still at Large. These Giant Forks in the Road really put a Smile on People's Faces. Everybody gets out of their vehicle & takes a picture. Do you have a Fork in the Road in your state? In the past few years, many restaurants have opened near Main Street and the waterfront, making this cute town a mecca for excellent dining and shopping again

Bridges straits and…read morelights The strait between Narragansett Bay and Mount Hope Bay is only about 600 yards wide with a couple of small islands, sand bars and rocks thrown in for interest. A dangerous place to sail through at the best of times and very interesting in foggy or bad weather. So it was recognized a long time ago that some help for mariners would be nice and a small lighthouse was built here in 1855. Only about 30 feet tall and had a small 6th order Fresnel lens that was later upgraded to a 5th order lens. The light not only helped the boats get through the strait but also assisted the Bristol Ferry than ran across the treacherous area. A very useful little lighthouse that did it's job well and prevented many accidents. Then in 1927 the hulking Mount Hope Bridge was built between Bristol and Aqidneck Island so both the ferry and the lighthouse were no longer needed. The huge bridge served as a great navigational aide, as long as the boats didn't run into it or course. The lighthouse remained but since it isn't easy to see from land it was forgotten and slowly fell into a rather sorry condition. Paint was chipping off and it definitely needed so TLC. Fortunately some great new owners spent time restoring the lighthouse to it's former cute little self and now sits proudly under the huge bridge. It's private and never open to the public but good views can be seen from the water or by the landing under the bridge. This is a residential house so don't get too close and respect their privacy. The combination of the looming bridge, cool straits and lovely little lighthouse makes for a very special place indeed.

Continuous Line V (levity), 2022 is a doodle, unscripted, enacted in slow motion. It is made of…read morelengths of thick-walled steel pipe (2-" diameter), which are bent with hydraulic assistance into partial loops and arcs of dynamic radii. The first time I saw it, I was drawn by the bright white steel curves that change perspective with every step. The curved segments were welded end-to-end, organized intuitively to create a continuous line drawing in three dimensional space. The sculpture shifts dramatically with change in vantage point. Its white enamel coating stands out vividly in urban space, while referring to white linear traffic markings, bike lanes, and crosswalks. The artist is Kelly Goff is a Curaçaoan-American artist working primarily in sculpture, installation, and public spaces. Kelly was born and raised on the Caribbean island Curaçao, studied science and art at New College of Florida, and completed his graduate work at RISD with honors. Located at the corner of Broadway and Empire st, it's easily reached by people staying at the Hilton across the street, people that visit the Public Library, a block away or fans that come to the Amica Mutual Pavilion across the street...as well as many others that might just walk by this part of downtown Providence.
