Definitely time to update my review of Salt! When I started here 2 years ago, the studio was less than a week old. I've been attending classes here 5-6 days a week since they opened. Clearly I love it here and the studio just keeps getting better & better. They've recently opened a 2nd location in Sewickley. All the instructors are first rate, genuine, caring people who will motivate you and assist you in your practice every time you're here. It's always a pleasure to walk in the door to a warm greeting & the spa-like atmosphere. The vinyasa flow workout is hot & sweaty and you know you're doing something truly good for your body here. If you need a break & drop into child's pose during class, don't be shocked if the instructor or assistant comes over & massages your back! The new student special of $30 for 30 days is always in effect for anyone wanting to try it out. A lot of us got hooked that first month & stayed! There are mats, yoga towels, blocks, bolsters, etc. to use during class or you can bring your own. Supporting the community is a huge goal here with charity donation based classes (happy hours), kids & yogis with special gifts classes. There's a wonderful spirit of friendship & togetherness fostered here that's quite contagious! read more

One of my friends who comes here regularly invited me to try it out with a free class pass. It was a day when the weather was bad but the class was still packed - I was amazed! The gentleman leading the class, Andrew, provided me with a tablet to fill out my personal information and guide me through the process of registering. He was very personable and helpful throughout the process. This was my first yoga class I have ever attended. I was unfamiliar with the terminology and poses but I was able to keep up with Andrew's instructions, with a little guidance from my friend! I became educated on the equipment used (loved the additional lavender spray so when you stick your nose in the mat, it smells like heaven!), the terminology, and have a better understanding of yoga itself. I was definitely challenged not only with the poses and positions, but with having to make a conscious effort to coordinate my breathing with the exercise. It was eye opening in that I rarely think about my breathing but that it truly impacts your mental and physical status throughout the course of the class. I enjoyed my first yoga class and look forward to potentially attending a few classes in the future. read more

My review references an injury that occurred at this studio on Thanksgiving morning of 2018. There are a couple reasons why I have waited to write this. One, I was hopeful that the studio would have learned from their mistakes. Knowing people within the yoga community and someone who has gone to the studio recently, that hasn't happened. The other reason is that I have decided to stop pursuing legal actions. On the day I attended, the studio packed so many students into the room that our mats were touching on all sides. Before class started I voiced concern and the instructor assured me that everything would be fine. I returned to my mat assuming they knew what they were doing and would alter the class to accommodate us all being way too close to each other. I had assumed wrong. The instructor started the class saying that we are so packed in today that it's fine if we hit our neighbors. Again, I figured this meant a hand accidentally brushing up against your neighbor. The instructor went into her shouting positions less like a leading a yoga class and more like a some sort of body boot camp. The woman in front of my thrusting her limbs all over, also more like a boot camp instead of yoga. When being commanded into a down dog, this led to me getting donkey style kicked in the top of the head by the woman in front of me. I fell to my mat and the instructor acknowledged the incident by laughing about it. I didn't feel right at the time but being that we were essentially trapped because we were so tightly packed in, I finished class. Moments after I got home is when things really started to impact me. I spent Thanksgiving laying in a dark room, with no sound. I spent the following eight months recovering from my concussion with the help of the concussion clinic and going to therapy multiple times a week. It took a full year to feel myself again. Luckily, I have an extremely understanding boss because as a big data software engineer struggling to be able to focus or tolerate looking at a monitor is a real problem. The day after this injury occurred my wife contacted the owner of the studio. The woman apologized and seemed to understand that they can't operate a studio like this. She said she would check back in on me to see how things are going. She never called back, emailed...nothing. After I completed all of my therapy and got back to about 80% I contacted her about my medical bills. I have extremely good insurance and just wanted her to cover co-pays. The amount of money we are talking about is so minor, it should have been a given to just have some good morals, do the right thing and pay it. Instead she fought me and had her husband send a nasty letter saying I signed a waiver before attending class. Yoga isn't a contact sport, it's not an activity where being crammed in a room and getting kicked or punched or anything else is something that is remotely inherent in the activity. Anyways, there are so many much better yoga studios in the Pittsburgh area and so many better yoga instructors don't waste your time at this place. read more

Salt is one of the best hot yoga studio spaces in the Pittsburgh area. They really went first class on the amenities. Heck even their loaner mats are Manduka pro lites. Fancy pants. The isntructors are all quite good. I am very fond of both Amy and Wendys classes myself. read more

I agree with another reviewer who said it depends on the instructor in terms of your experience here at salt. Overall my experience has been very positive over the several years I have been coming, but part of me is considering trying a new yoga studio. Some of the instructors are truly fantastic and you get not only the workout but the spiritual side of the practice too. Lately, though, I have noticed salt shift away from this balance. Classes are so fast paced it's hard to get into a pose at all before you are onto the next. There is no assistance or much instruction at all, so while I've been going for a while, I am not sure if I am doing the poses properly. I think this is part of their style, and sometimes it's great, other times it would be helpful to have a bit more guidance. I also miss the spiritual piece here, and the root of the practice itself. Everyone's practice is different and I know people are looking for something different, but this is a big missing here for me. Lastly, I reached out to them about yoga teacher training, but did not get a very helpful or timely response. It was a bit off putting admittedly, but perhaps this is not something they are offering now. Either way, if you're looking for a great work out and a generally friendly atmosphere, this is a great place. Salt Power Yoga is the best place for yoga in the Pittsburgh area. I have tried several studios and Salt Power Yoga is the cleanest, newest and most professionally done studio. Salt Power Yoga has blocks, mats, towels, and bolsters for a person to use. There are also two bathrooms and shower room to change and get cleaned up after getting hot and sweaty. The Studio is large with lots of windows that let in lots of sunlight. The instructors are knowledgeable, helpful and will surprise you with different poses than you would expect. I have never taken a hot yoga class before, and this was my first experience both with this studio and with hot yoga in general. Some of my friends and I decided to take their Friday 12pm intermediate level class during our lunch hour to reward ourselves for a rough work week! Upon walking in, the studio lobby is small but modern, clean and inviting. It smelled like a delicious spa...eucalyptus, mint and herbs were floating through the studio space, very calming and a nice prep to the class. The staff was friendly and accommodating. One woman even set up my mat, towels and modifier block for me INSIDE the studio while I changed. SO nice! They set me up with a reduced rate "drop in class", only $10! They also told me that I could easily upgrade to their intro yogi rate of "30 for $30" if I liked the class enough afterward to sign up! I thought it was really nice that I could change my mind and that there was no pressure to buy a package. I really loved the class itself...very intense and a great work out. The instructor walked around and instructed the moves firmly, but calmly and was very motivating. I will definitely be getting the "30 for $30" intro package and then will probably continue to attend at least once a week. I did a 30- day new student membership and attended class nearly every day, trying new teachers and classes. I have been practicing hot vinyasa flow yoga at a different local Pittsburgh studio since 2012. My preferred style of yoga is hot vinyasa flow, not necessarily "power yoga." I like when the teacher speaks a lot during class, makes lots of adjustments and is constantly giving the class suggestions of how to better your movements and practice. I also like a spiritually based flow, emphasis on setting intentions, clearing the mind, remaining present. In my opinion, Salt is can be hit or miss- it entirely depends on the instructor. Most instructors I have taken didn't introduce themselves when class starts, they walk in the door and say "childs pose" and class begins. I find myself, even as a practiced yogi, struggling to keep up with the pace of the class. Most teachers will command move after move, less than 1-2 second pauses between commands, with no corrections- "down dog, bend, look, jump, fold, half, fold, sweep up, chair" etc. The "flow" part of the yoga seems to be missing. There are frequent awkward transitions, for example from fish pose to down dog, without suggesting how to get from one to the other. I suppose this is the "power" way of doing things, but practice seems to be pointless when more than half of the class are beginners or don't have good technique, and the teacher doesn't take the time to make those adjustments or suggestions. However, I did particularly enjoy Mitch's class- he was the only teacher who made corrections and his class seemed very breath-focused. My suggestion to Salt would be to classify different levels-- right now they only have "power flow" "warm flow" and then a few a la carte options like meditation. It would be more accessible for beginners if they knew what to expect when walking in the door, since the style of the class does so widely vary based on instructor. The teachers who have the "commanding" power style would be more suited for advanced students who don't need those vital adjustments. Also, I think it would be helpful to have 75 minute classes available too, as the 60 minute classes can feel rushed, especially with how fast the pace already is. TL;DR: If you like hot vinyasa flow and are looking for a spiritual practice, this studio is probably not for you, or you could try it out but be sure to keep an open mind. If you are looking for a sweaty workout or if you like Bikram style, you will enjoy this studio's offerings. read more

I found the instruction is more like a gym class, with quick staccato barks....up, down, half, fold, warrior, reverse, chair....allowing no time to get into the benefit of the pose or even really flow smoothly. It wasn't for me. The space is very pretty, and the location is good. I might try some other instructors, but I am 3 for 3 with the same experience. read more

Great studio, great vibe and excellent instructors. Love the Warm Yoga Flow class - it's the perfect temperature and always a strong workout. I especially appreciate the minimal wording of the prompts, because it allows you to sink into your personal practice and flow without listening to nonstop talking and instruction. I also love the way the instructors thoughtfully mix in the spiritual side of yoga and remind you to be present, be grateful and just breathe. Only thing holding back a fifth star is the need for an 8am class during the week! Classes always start and end promptly and are challenging for all levels. Facility is very clean. Bathroom and shower room available. They have mats and towels, however they can run out if a class is huge. Popular times - weekends, holidays - get there early or you won't get a spot. read more

This place is a class act. Hands down best yoga studio I've ever been too. Not only are the classes great, but they offer tea, fruit, lotion, face wash, etc and it's all organic. In addition they have hair ties incase you forget yours... they also have towels, yoga mats, yoga towel mats, blocks, mat spray, water, all for clients to use. Everyone is very friendly and classes are easy to get into. Just come early for your favorite spot. The only thing that would make this better would be in they installed an infrared heat in the studio. (Similar to infrared sauna) love coming here and enjoy all the classes. I really enjoy the candlelight classes and evening hours - even on the weekend!! Just makes me wish I tried this place sooner :) namaste. read more

I've been coming to Salt power Yoga for the last 4 years! I've never been anywhere else for yoga. After about a 4 month hiatus I've returned to the Sunday class at noon. The studio offers classes every day of the week in 2 different locations, seven Fields and Sewickley. An 8am class would be great during the week to fit a busy work schedule! Otherwise the staff is great and provide challenging classes each time. My favorite instructors have always been Rachel, Kelly and Stevie! They seem to switch up their classes and give the best "kick your butt" work out! Recently they changed the arrangement of the audio lobby and where the towels and blocks are in the studio which provides more room for more customers! And oh yes! They do provide mats, towels, blocks and mat towels for those who are in need however you best arrive to class early if you want one! Both studio locations offer a position called a "Kula" which I once was. This is a great way to get involved in the yoga studio and help keep the place tidy and helping check clients in in exchange for a free class! Just ask Stevie or Rachel if you're interested! This is and always will be my yoga home! These are some pretty amazing people with big hearts! read more

I agree with Debi A. - I tried a few times hoping a different instructor would have a more familiar teaching style but it was "up, down, up, down" and very little focus on breath. Yoga is breath. Very disappointed. The studio is beautiful, clean, and inviting on the bright side. read more

Salt is my absolute favorite studio (I actually signed up for Yelp just so I could review it!). The instructors are fantastic and very welcoming. You can borrow mats, towels, etc for free and they have a shower. No excuse not to go during lunch break! I really like the variety of classes they have - candlelight is my favorite, especially in the winter. They also have "everybody yoga," and they mean EVERYBODY. It's controlled chaos and it's amazing. They do a lot of community stuff too, like benefitting a new charity every month and the "kula", which is where students can work/help out to get free classes.
