At one time, Ruby used to give great haircuts, especially for those of us with thick, curly hair. Plus, his prices were hard to beat. These days his cuts are unreliable, at best. He's very distracted by everything else that's going on in the salon and genuinely doesn't seem interested in cutting hair anymore. It's too bad, because he has the skill. I understand having someone else blow dry my hair after the cut if you're busy, but when no one else is even waiting?! That's an extra tip I have to leave, even though it was not my request. At least he did check and tweak the cut afterwards. I've also experienced unprofessionalism from several of his employees over the years. I would put up with it only because of the difficulty I was having in finding someone else to give me a good haircut. After much trial and error, I've found a new stylist who I'm happy (enough) with. I made an appointment to get my hair colored a week in advance. On my way there, they called me to come later without any explanation. Once I got there, I had to wait almost 30 mins. I wanted balayage, and asked the girl helping me to PLEASE not to make it neither orange or too yellow ( I showed her a picture of caramel balayage) ñ. When she was finished I saw my hair was too "blonde" for my taste, but I thought it was just the lighting. Fast forward one week later, and two washes, my hair was so orange that I couldn't even sleep. I was afraid about going back plus they don't open on Saturday, so I went to another salon to get my hair fixed (over the other salon they explained the importance of toner). They tried to hide my review. Reuven/ Ruby is highly greedy, I did not hesitate to proceed on the truth & share my experience with him and his business. The only reason I went to this salon to begin with is because of Daniel, and I truly hope one day she stops working for these people and either goes to another salon or open up her own salon. To get to the point- I went to this salon for a trim by Daniel, and at the end they told me it'll be $25 and I was going to leave a $7 tip for my small trim and wash. Reuven quickly gets aggravated when I said I don't have cash (I was unaware/ forgot this is a cash only place), which is fine because I offered to Venmo the salon. Reuven was extremely mad that I wanted to leave a 7 dollar tip and he said that I have to now pay the "Venmo percentage" and I MUST pay $18 extra on my trim. Please note that this review is not even about being forced to paying 18 dollars extra for my trim, it's about how he was yelling at me during this in the salon and being HIGHLY insistent and rude that "YOU MUST pay me $43 in total" after pulling out his calculator and holding it in my face. (No exaggeration whatsoever). He was very loud. Who treats their customers like this and yells at them over tipping? I wanted to at least send the tip via Venmo to Daniel but he yelled at me even more and said no. This is highly unprofessional behavior, my family and friends will never go to his salon. read more

I went to Ruby salon the first time for Karetin my hair. First of all when I book it w him , they gave me a random girl. She burned my hair . After processing , then 3 days later I washed my hair, which I found out a lot of curls and waves on my hair. When I talked to ruby he said it made ur job easier!! Really?? I've been told about Ruby's bad reputation but I really liked a certain hairstylist, so I took the risk. 2 hours after I left my appointment, the owner ruby called me to YELLL that I didn't give enough tip. I gave a normal 5 dollar tip- which is the most I could give since I'm a young girl and can't afford dropping 10 dollar tips. He kept yelling at me and going on and on, that I didn't give enough tip and I need to come back and give more, completely wasn't hearing my side. I got Eli and i swear i am so used to going for a $100 haircut and this was the same thing!!!! Even better !! He was extremely nice and knew what he was doing even when i was a little nervous because of a new way of doing it !!! I walked in with my hair totally messed up, dead, and extremely tangled!! He had to fully brush it and he did fantastic! Soon enough he was cutting it and i asked for 2 inches , he gave me 2 1/2 which if he would of told me to begin with I probably would of said know but he absolutely knew what he was doing and I said how much was this he then told me 2 1/2 i was very happy with my results and forever will love his work!!! Made a last minute appointment for an updo for the night of a gala I was hosting. I called the salon two hours earlier for an appointment. Not only did I absolutely love how my hair came out but it was reasonably priced! I went to this place based on the fact that they're close to my office and the other reviews here. I'm thrilled that I did! I'd have given them five stars but my hair started falling out at the end of the night. But again for the price, you can't beat it! I definitely plan to go back for regular hair appointments. Edited to add: I went back to a haircut and color. I was originally booked with Gill but wound up having a woman (whose name escapes me) do my hair. There was a misunderstanding at the front desk apparently she thought I said "the girl" and not "Gill" when I made the appointment. Anyway, I'm SUPER glad she wound up doing my hair, it came out GORGEOUS! I've gotten so many compliments. I cut off a good 11+ inches and dyed my hair so I came out with a completely different look and this woman NAILED it. I will be going back to this salon and asking for "the girl", hopefully I don't get Gill this time! LOL Oh only down side, they don't take credit or debit cards so be sure you have cash with you. I hadn't had a good hair cut in a long time. My coworker recommended this place. She said to ask for Ruby and that its like $50. I made my appointment with Ruby. I get in there and it's teeny tiny but not crowded. The girl (Diana) who washed my hair was also the one cutting my hair. I was really nervous and confused bc i knew she wasnt Ruby. But whatever, i figured she wasnt cutting it super short, so if i didnt like it i could deal. We exchanged names and she tried making conversation. Went in for color correction. They knew exactly what to do just by looking at my hair. The guy, and I forget his name-- I think it's Yuri but I'm not sure. Was nice and helpful and made me feel like my hair would be saved without falling out !! Bleach blonde issue Cons: a bit pricey. Today, I walked in there having dyed my hair by myself & it was 5 different colors & was absolutely disgusting! They squeezed me in even though they were crazy busy and I walked out of there with my hair in 1 beautiful shade of brown and the exact cut I wanted. I made an appointment here for the first time, and I had hoped to get some time with Ruby, the owner and head stylist. He wasn't available, but the woman on the phone assured me that Diana was very good. So I went anyway, feeling brave. I was consumed with anxiety, having been the victim of far too many lame haircuts and bad dye jobs. I hadn't colored or highlighted my hair since the 1st Bush administration, but I had really been wanting to up the oomph factor on my tresses for quite some time. Diana quietly and expertly foiled my hair, and when it was over, I couldn't really tell how it was going to look. After a wash, she got to the cutting. Every time she snipped a 4-5 inch layer of my hair, I closed my eyes and silently repeated the mantra "It's just hair. It will grow back." When she was finished snipping, I prepared myself for the worst. But as she blew out my hair, something amazing happened-- both the color and the cut sprung to life. After the last spritz of hair spray, my hair looked AWESOME. Today, it seems my burst of bravery has paid off. If only I was always so fortunate! read more

As a man with semi- ish long hair , Ruby is the only place i trust to cut my hair. $20 for a hair cut. The staff are friendly but the place is very hectic and busy (not that it affects me).. most of the staff speak russian and tend to shout at each other in Russian.. I wouldnt recommend the place if you are looking to relax but these guys know how to cut mens hair ( even though 99% of their clients are women). HORRIFIC AND HORRENDOUS PERIOD! Comparable to hair salons in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other oppressive underdeveloped countries that lack modern day values and social/emotional intelligence. This place is a complete nightmare and should be avoided at all costs. Backwards caveman-like behavior from every staff member. Shouting, attitude, blunt rude comments to mention a few are what you'll experience here. Let alone getting your hair done. That is a completely different story. After being berated by every staff member, from the secretary to the individual who washes your hair, and then the "stylist," is an experience of greater cost to you than the monetary value you anticipated saving by choosing to go to this "salon." I mention that in quotes because not only do people not know how to do hair (it ends up looking ridiculous, and did both times I attempted to give this place a shot), but also because several of the "stylists" do not even speak a word of English, and I mean this literally. There is only one license on display on the wall, and I wouldn't be surprised if the owner is the only licensed hair stylist in this "salon." I am not a complainer at all, but felt behooved to rate this place to save all of you time and aggravation. I created a yelp account just for this particular place to warn all! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I came here on a weekend (early morning) for two things: a blowout and a sleek, sexy ponytail. My sister needed her hair done too, and she wanted a blowout. The stylist had absolutely no idea what she was doing. I told her I wanted a ponytail and she couldn't even manage that. She tried a few things, but kept saying, "This won't work. That won't work." Then she tried to do a simple braid across the front that would sweep into that half-up/half-down look - complete failure. Rather than doing the french braid into the hair, she just did a free standing braid that dangled from my forehead and tried to pin it. Did not work. Finally, she took a clip out of her own hair and told me that I should just pin it myself. In the end, I left with a terrible blowout and I wound up having my sister do my hair later that day...in a ponytail. As for my sister, her stylist completely damaged her hair with what should have been simple blowout. He pulled and teased and it came out looking incredibly frizzy due to the breakage he caused. The cherry on top was the rudeness we experienced at the checkout counter. There was no, "How did you find everything?" or "Are you happy with your hair?" No. Just, "Cash only. Or check" Cash only?! Checks?! Are you serious? The attitude from the front desk lady put me over the edge. An absolutely miserable person who couldn't even muster a smile or ask how my experience was - unacceptable. I rarely Yelp, and when I do it is only because I've had a wonderful experience or a positively HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. This experience falls into the latter category and I choose to share it with you all so that you do not repeat my mistake or patronize a place that mistreats its clients and can't even manage a ponytail or a proper blowout. The best salon in all of Great Neck. Ruby is a master colorist, but all the stylists are very talented. I have been coming here for about 6 years think all the stylists have done my blow outs. So if someone is busy, you can take whoever is available and have a great result. I had up-dos done here for weddings. I went from blond highlights back to red and never got more compliments on my hair. I do keratin (organic) and organic hair color. The prices are reasonable!! What more can you want from a GN salon? My husband is a client as well and comes in for man-tints to naturally blend the grey. He looks years younger after a visit. This is truly a family business, where the customers are all family. Made an appointment for my friend and I, a month in advance, for a special occasion on Sunday April 5th, came in 10 minutes before our appointment time and was unceremoniously informed that they....changed our appointment arbitrarily, without notifying us! not only the stylist we specifically asked for was not even there, nor did they find it important to notify us with a courtesy phone call!
