When the waitress came to take our drink order, we politely asked if the music could be lowered--not turned off, just lowered enough so we could have a conversation. She looked at us somewhat strangely, said okay, and walked away. When she returned with our drinks, we asked again about the music. Her response was, "I thought they did." We decided to stay, order our food, and try to enjoy our meal. When our appetizer, the onion ring tower, arrived, the music was still blaring. We asked once again if it could be turned down just a little. This time we were told that the manager had texted the owner, and the owner said the music needed to remain at that level. At that point, the server did offer to move us to another area of the restaurant, which we appreciated. The music was somewhat better there, so we stayed. Unfortunately, the food was just as disappointing. The burgers arrived cold, and the bacon tasted as though it had come straight from the refrigerator. The cheesesteak bun was burnt, and the meat filling was lacking. This was nothing like the food we had enjoyed here in the past. It's disappointing to leave a restaurant I've supported for years feeling that loud music was considered more important than the comfort of its customers. When a customer politely asks for the music to be lowered so they can have a conversation--especially when the restaurant is nearly empty--it seems like a reasonable request. Sadly, between the refusal to lower the music and the decline in food quality, we will not be returning. It's a shame, because this used to be one of my favorite places for a burger. When a restaurant is nearly empty shortly after 5 p.m., perhaps it's worth listening to what customers are telling you.

And that's very good news for Indian food lovers in Coral Springs. We visited Maharaja Bistro back in August and were extremely impressed. The biryani was among the better versions we've had in South Florida, the chicken karahi was excellent, and the bhindi masala (okra) was phenomenal. So we had high expectations for Khana Kh'Zana, and the cooking absolutely delivered. But don't come in a hurry. The previous restaurant called itself an "Express Indian Cafe." This isn't. Like Maharaja Bistro, the kitchen takes its time preparing dishes fresh, and you can taste the difference. The Butter Chicken Meatballs were an unusual but excellent interpretation of the classic dish, with a rich, tomato-forward sauce that wasn't excessively heavy or sweet. The Shrimp Achari was another winner, featuring a lighter, spicy, tangy tomato-based curry seasoned with Indian pickling spices. We also enjoyed the saag, made with mustard greens and spinach, and aloo naan, tandoor-baked bread stuffed with seasoned potatoes. Rachel called the latter "an Indian knish," which is actually a pretty good description. The dining room has received a substantial makeover, with emerald-green walls, leather banquettes, ornate gold-framed artwork, and warm lighting. It's intimate, attractive, and considerably more upscale than the previous restaurant. Frankly, the old Khana Kh'Zana had become a shadow of its former self before closing. This is effectively a different restaurant, with new ownership, a beautiful interior, and a kitchen producing some genuinely excellent North Indian cooking. Having now eaten at both Maharaja Bistro and Khana Kh'Zana, I'm pleased to see the quality is consistent. Definitely worth revisiting, even if you'd written off the old restaurant. Just bring your appetite and a little patience.
