We went to this place for a 4-year old birthday party…read more Honestly, the concept is fun, but the "teachers" kept insisting on the parents leaving to get their "grown-up time" and kept suggesting bars and coffee shops around. Some parents left but some of us stayed because we wanted to see what it all was (which the teachers were clearly disappointed with lol). They made the kids all sit around a table and all the kids took turns adding ingredients to a bowl and stirring with a whisk as the teacher brought everything to each kid around the table. One of the teachers spilled flour on my son's head, and another doused one of the girls' pancakes in syrup where they were literally drenched in it. Some kids got their food and started eating while two of the kids were just sitting there waiting for the next batch of pancakes, watching their friends eat theirs. Also, the menu was pancakes with syrup, ice cream sundae (kids made the ice cream, pancakes and whipped cream) and then cake of course... everything sugary, all before lunch time. And then the teachers suggested we take the kids to a nearby park to blow off their energy. Needless to say, all the kids were super wired up and all the parents were quite annoyed because no one ate lunch nor napped. But like I said, that was a neat concept and knowing this, maybe you can find an appropriate time of the day for your party so parents won't be annoyed.

Farming school! Who could hate on that? Well apparently some local county government did last…read moreyear and they almost got shut down. But thankfully Scott Avett of the Avett brothers came to the rescue and with the media as well, these guys are back in business. A review really can't do this place justice, you need to do your own research. They could be helping the future of farming. We need small farms, but unless you grew up on one its hard to know the logistics, much less if its even your kind of thing. These guys not only help you learn how to farm, and the monetary logistics, but they also let you have a plot of your own to try out, with only a small investment. I really wish I could say more, but just do some research yourself, or help get involved. Check out how the CFSA is involved. If you are a foodie, this should be important to you.

Skilstak is education as it was always meant to be!…read more In our very institutionalized world where individualism is discouraged this learning community is a breath of fresh air. Purely from an educational standpoint you are going to grow intellectually here regardless of your age. Rob is a well spring of knowledge eager to teach those that want to be taught, and wanting to be taught is the key. He has an uncanny way of making challenging problems entertaining to solve. I often find myself delighted to continue work on projects throughout the week fully knowing I will not be graded. I was already in tech prior to meeting Rob, a matter of fact I teach tech courses at a local community college. It took me some time to finally decide to start learning at Skilstak. At first I didn't fully understand how a personalized education like this would work and had some fear to take the risk for some reason. Ultimately, I am glad I decided to do it! The price is a tremendous value for the unique education you are receiving in return. I've attended well known universities that can't hold a candle to what Rob is building at Skilstak. Consider the current price for 16 1 hour weekly session: $800. Each session is going to be specialized to where you are in your learning process in which you can ask questions and get personalized help the whole time. Compare that to learning the same material at a College or boot camp where you can expect to pay $2000 per semester to receive a one size fits all education. Honestly, I could write about how great Skilstak is all day! You should try it for yourself. Schedule some time to meet with Rob and see how this could fit into your learning process.

The business has a sweet little set up convenient to Cornelius and Davidson and Huntersville, with a small downstairs area that has several tables and chairs with many desktops and laptops. My son loved the computer coding and games and chatting with the other kids and he seemed to be learning although I could never quite put my finger on what he was learning :-) Unfortunately a lot of the in-class instruction was verbose and tangential and the main instructor/owner in recent semesters seemed to have other projects going on in other rooms and leave the kids for extended periods. Also our 7-10 year old kid felt uncomfortable asking questions sometimes as instructor could be a bit critical. Regarding what the kids are learning or what they're supposed to be working on outside of class, parents receive high tech speak, LONG emails and there is a general lack of consistency or clarity. AND the main instructor can be defensive if you have questions or concerns, plus it really ain't cheap! so we finally just did a cost-benefit analysis and pulled out. The good thing is our son has been able to teach his peers basic coding for some time now, he knows a bit of python and roblox and other stuff blah blah and the local science museum computer whiz was very impressed with his knowledge recently, so I know he learned a lot here. The local community college offers classes and we will be proceeding with computer sciences there.
