It's amazing to see how Benton County has grown up, but this courthouse is still here and still standing proud. The marker out front points out an earlier structure, reading "The first court house in Benton County, built of hewed logs was erected on this site (At Bentonville) in 1837, the year after the county was created. It was named for Thomas Benton." It is marker A-1 and was erected by the Arkansas History Commission. The courthouse is a three story structure, built in 1928 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is in the Classic Revival Style with a symmetrical façade. Beautiful building, in great condition. [Review 19797 overall - 273 in Arkansas - 770 of 2023.]

All there is to eat stuff from a stupid vending machine, but I had to take all the change out of my pockets to get through the metal detector. Terrible place for lunch. They really need to ad some T.V.'s or pool tables or something. Very boring, so much boring, never recommend. The picture is of the old church pew and honestly I'd rather be at a church right now. I've had more entertaining experiences reading headstones. Super lame. I don't see how they stay in business.

The lobby and courthouse spaces have marble walls and terrazzo marble floors. You'll be able to spot the ornamental moldings around the interior doorways. It is six stories tall and you can't miss the Art Deco stylings. Sebastian county has two seats of justice, this one and another that was build in Greenwood in 1861. The county was named for US Senator William K. Sebastian who served from 1849 to 1861. This building initially also served as City Hall for ort Smith but the city offices have been moved to a new building on Garrison Avenue. The building was secured when I was here on a weekend but it's easy enough to walk the grounds and stick your nose against the glass at the entrances. And the street parking is free thanks to the City of Fort Smith. [Review 678 of 2024 - 348 in Arkansas - 21709 overall]

It's a fascinating history And one that you have to spend a little bit of time going to the museum and understanding the different angles. I guess that's a purpose of a museum, right? We learned a little bit about Judge Isaac, Parker, as one of the first influences that had to deal with the wild West murderers and people committing heinous crimes that until he arrived, didn't face many consequences as there was no federal government system that was in control of the area and the tribunal process did not cover non-native Americans. Fascinating history. You can even see a replica of the courthouse as well as the gallows as they were over 160 people hang here. Take a rock across the railroad tracks and read a bit about the trail of tears. There are plenty of areas to contemplate the history. Bring a picnic, there are many places to relax and spread out. The museum is actually free, is air-conditioned and had clean restrooms
