This wee shop on Castle Street would fit right in at a farmers Market but here it is plonked right in the City Centre. The variety of fruit and veg in this wee shop is incredible - if you're a City office worker and you're looking to nip out at lunch and get some ingredients for dinner then come here. The spuds still have soil on them and the carrots have their roots firmly attached. Forget organic this is just fresh produce transported from farm to stall in the blink of an eye. Not only is it fresh but it's cheap too. It's not often in this day and age that you can get anything for under a £1 but here you could pick up 3lb's of carbalicious potatoes for that price. I urge you to forget the supermarket giants and give Fruiterama a go!

The market was very busy, but I did go at lunchtime on a Saturday…read more The first stall I went to had loads of fresh hummus, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, etc. They also had big chunks of focaccia, soda bread, Guinness bread and fresh garlic bagels. At the recommendation of the lovely woman working there, I got the caramelised onion hummus and smothered it all over the garlic bagel (the best thing ever). I also got the sun-dried tomato pesto, which I nearly ate in one sitting. If I lived here, I would be at this stall every week! There were some cute stalls with local vendors selling souvenirs, artwork, and jewellery. There were also quite a few stands with cookies, pastries and sweet treats. These all looked really good. On the other side of the market, there was a lot more hot food. They had everything from tacos, mac and cheese and large portions of fries with various toppings. Everything looked really good and the beef taco from Med Mex was delicious! The sauce was to die for. Definitely worth the visit and might pop back in before I leave!

There were tons of people, both locals and tourists, walking around enjoying the food, drinks and items each vendor had to offer here. The place was alive with live music playing, as well as a school group performing dances in one area and a band playing in another area. The vendors were super friendly and we got to try samples of a few different things before we decided to buy a couple things to nibble on while waiting for our hotel to let us check in. There were a ton of different vendors and at this place, I had one of the best bao buns I have ever had, filled with curry chicken! Prices amongst the vendors seemed very reasonable and I ended up buying a couple cute little magnets one vendor had to offer!

Today I was lucky enough to try a 'Billy Burger' from the award winning Broughgammon Farm, so…read morewhat's a 'Billy Burger' I hear you ask? Well a 'Billy Burger ' is a kid goat burger and boy oh boy it tasted good. At first I was a little skeptical about eating goat but then I remembered back to the Billy Goats Gruff story from my childhood and this settled my mind as I knew they'd be nice and tender from running from trolls all day. Hope at least someone gets that reference. Anyway, the kid goat burger was amazing, cooked right in front of me and slightly on the rare side. The burger was garnished with tzatziki, cheddar cheese, pickled carrot and pickled cabbage. It truly was a taste sensation. I chatted to the guys running the Broughgammon farm stall and they said they are regulars at Farmers Markets all over Northern Ireland as well as having an on site farm shop in Ballycastle, Ballymena and Coleraine. They only use the finest produce and all their livestock is free range which makes it extra tasty. There's a great story about the history of the farm on their website - well worth a read. The stall itself was excellent, quick service and really friendly staff - definitely worth a visit if you're at St Georges Market. When local produce is cooked street style and it still tastes like gourmet food you know the ingredients are top notch and this is the case with Broughgammon Farm's goods.

Everything about this store is authentic and old school in the best possible way. Even the sign is something you'd expect to see in black and white photographs. The shop is on a corner plot which means they have loads of items outside, yard brushes, flowers and fresh fruit and veg. You can have a good nosey at their produce without actually going in doors. They have loads of organic, looking fruit, as well as some 21st century items like sweets and snacks. When I went in yesterday it was being run by a single lady but she had everything under control, a proper shopkeeper for a proper shop. This wee part of The Antrim Road is like a throwback to a bygone era. Next to the greengrocers there's a butchers and a baker. All we are missing is a candle stick maker - but who knows that could be next.

Well, this particular greengrocers certainly sold a huge number of fruit, including the most ginormous watermelons I have ever seen, and a few strange looking characters that can be most likened to a cross between an apple and a plum. They also had a vast range of veg, as well as salads (my sister got rather excited at the prospect of shredded beetroot), coleslaw, a few health food snacks (sesame bars...mmm. Or not) and other typical purchases in a fruit 'n' veg shop. I picked up a few kiwi fruit at 29p each (pretty cheap I reckon, and they were really quite delicious to boot), as well as a couple of nectarines for 45p each. And this is where things changed. Up until this point I thought the smooth-skinned, hard-hearted fruit I had been eating for weeks was a plum. Apparently not. It was actually a nectarine, and if it hadn't have been for Ian Wilson (cheers sir), I never would've known the difference. Now, I know this epiphany could have happened in any fruit and veg shop, or even Tesco, but that is not the point. It happened in Ian Wilson's in Saintfield, and I am a better, more knowledgeable person for it. Plums / nectarines...I will forever be able to tell you apart now. Ha. Following on from the success of the Christmas Continental Market the Spring market was bound to be popular. The market is a great place to walk around - there's also a great selection of international craft stalls. Having this market in the grounds of City Hall is a great way to draw locals to the city centre. I highly recommend trying the Rocket and Relish burgers and the hotdogs (As you can tell I have sampled a few stalls). Also give the Polish bar a visit. There's a nice outside seating area perfect for an afternoon pint. There really is something for everyone at the Spring Market - it's nice to walk around a market at City Hall and not have 20 layers on to keep you from getting frostbite.
