His confidence has improved with his writing, learning how to organize his thoughts better when tackling history and English Language Arts assignments. He's doing more than just the bare minimum, including more descriptive language and details. He's proactively creating outlines while reading to set himself up for success when trying to remember details later for questions or discussions. He's gotten better at self-advocacy, reaching out to teachers via email, when he's unsure of how to tackle an assignment or something isn't working correctly vs. just ignoring the issue. From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program.
