I plan on being a long term patron and feel I've found myself The Japanese Restaurant of choice in the South Eastern suburbs. The decor is clean and authentic, sporting metal tables, adorable Japanese art and mood lighting. There is a Sushi Chef at the end of the restaurant who you can watch prepare your fresh sushi or sashimi, it's a delightful place to be if you truly appreciate Japanese food and culture, as I do. The staff are incredibly sweet and attentive too! The menu is authentic. There is a couple if ways to approach ordering depending on your mood, group and such. The entree options can be ordered almost like tapas, the mains are filling on their own or you could order the platters of sumptuous sushi with fresh wasabi and tasty pickled ginger (not the sad looking pink stuff.) You can leave satisfied on $20 or $60. I think even if you are Japanese foods number one fan or just discovering the hidden treasures of the cuisine, I can not imagine you will not be pleased with your visit to this fine establishment on Hampton St. Enjoy!

Thinking about it makes me want to go back now!! We also ordered the Sama Fish. This was amazing. Grilled to perfection! Beware it can be a bit too fishy for the uninitiated. The surprise quality of the night was the the agedashi dofu! Best I've had in a long while. Decent amount of bonito flakes sprinkled on 4 cubes of perfectly cooked tofu .. lightly fried on the outside with soft centre tofu inside. This mixed in with a salty bonito broth!!!! OMG!

The dumplings were one such thing - beautiful measured tastes in the dumpling and sauces, but they were a little chewy and under-cooked. No such issues with the Tempura Calamari which was cooked nicely, as was the Nasu Dengaku (eggplant dish) which was up there with the best I've had. What a dish. The tofu was also fine, but got pretty soggy and lost its crispness pretty quickly in the sauce. The sashimi is where this place really steps up its game. Perfect melt in your mouth stuff. The sushi rolls that accompanied them on the platter we got were just ho-hum, but that sashimi was to die for. Next time we'll probably just gorge ourselves on endless plates of that. Service was again *almost* great. Lovely and attentive to our water, but they did give us prawn sashimi after we alerted them to not wanting it due to allergies. Lucky one of us could eat it, so it was all okay, but you lose a little confidence in them there. Overall though we really enjoyed it and will be back to give them a chance to nudge this 4 up to a 5.

Wa Fu fulfilled my requirements. Each succulent piece of the mixed vegetable selection (eggplant, zucchini, carrot and sweet potato) survived the 10 minute drive home in a brown paper bag and was complemented by the best Nasu Dengaku I have ever had: the deep fried egg-plant melted in my mouth, the miso sauce was perfectly balanced between sweet and savoury and left me feeling that this is a place to revisit! The warm welcome, the cleanliness and the ambiance further enhance my belief that I can stop searching for that perfect tempura! A very pleasant surprise from a suburban café.

With both indoor and outdoor seating, this small restaurant welcomes people of all sorts and has Japanese beer on tap! Wooden chairs and tables with menus on wooden boards, Cafe Carpenter combines Japanese and Korean flavours and does it well! I have found a quiet hideaway near home!

Normally I am a bit skeptical about places with too many choices, but at this place they do not disappoint. If you are looking for a friendly neighborhood restaurant and drinking place (Like an Asian Fushion Cheers?), but maybe are unsure of what you want, but just know that you want good food, then Cafe Carpenter is the place for you. It is not easy to find a place with a classically trained chef from Japan and someone who also actually lived and breathed the Korean street food scene. Food wise, from the LA Ribs, to the Donkatsu, and Takoyaki everything is excellent and authentic. Wide selection of alcoholic drinks, coffee, as well as desserts. The pricing is also very reasonable for comparable quality. While the quality, variety and service were all excellent, the one thing that stood out most for me was the friendliness and warmth of the owners and staff. I highly recommend.
