    Bulgogi-Haus - Korean BBQ.... Mmmmmh

An authentic Korean BBQ place located about 15 minutes drive from the Cologne Cathedral. The set…read moremenu consists of: three layered pork belly; sirloin; marinated beef; duck; shrimp; and squid. Bulgogi Haus offered four types of sauces when two is the norm, for varying combinations of flavors. The meats are grilled in front of you on charcoal, and the servers take care to replace the charcoal at least once so that you are not eating burnt pieces of meat. I really liked the concept of having the side dishes buffet-style. It's really a mood-killer when you run out of lettuce or salad in the middle of eating your meats then waiting for your server to refill your salads. The offerings included fried calamari, Korean-sushi, sticky and sweet potatoes, fish cakes, and kimchi. Bulgogi-Haus does not seem to use MSG, even in their yummy kimchi, and I was simply content after the meal without having to reach for extra glasses of water. Kudos for having a coat rack separate from the dining tables so that the coats don't smell like meat after, and kudos for the plum wine/aloe drinks on the house!

Not just our table, every table had consistent excellent service. I'm from Australia where there is a large presence of Korean food. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. It was easy travel on the U-Bahn (tram) from Cologne central station. Welcoming break from all the heavy Bavarian food. Highlights: 1. The service 2. Friendly staff 3. Fresh meat and seafood 4. Unlimited Kim chi and rice buffet. So many different styles! 5. Cheap!! 6. Located away from a touristy area...so you know it's made for locals and not just a fast food place. I will be back again, hungry for more! Only next time I'll definitely make a booking to be safe

It would take you days to explore and find all the nooks and crannies of this very cool place. But in any case, you will be relaxed and enjoy yourself. I was with a large group from the Uni-Essen and we had the party room on the second floor. The other plus was that the "all you can eat" came with all the beer you can drink as well. This was a cool place to have a party for sure. Now it was mainly university folks but young kids came in and ate, drank beer, surfed the Internet, played music and there are many rooms in this sprawling place to eat, mingle, and basically hang out. The Men's bathroom is famous for its scrolling films on the walls. The website lists all sorts of other things going on in this mixed-use-space, but after hanging out here, drinking a few good beers, and eating all sorts of amazing cheap food, I have to say I was happy our hosts brought us here. All I can say is wow. Now, I have no idea what it is like if you are a solo traveler who happens to be in Essen, but I think it would still be a great bet for a place to eat (take your time) have a few beers, check the email with the free wi-fi, and take advantage of this unique space. If I had the money I would open a place like this in the USA. Think Warhol's Factory without all the creepy people and with good food.
