True to the name, it's a haven for yacht and boat aficionados, with tons of interesting mementos from the ghosts of regattas past. It's definitely fun to look at if you don't feel like watching the game on one of the big screen TVs. They have all your usual bar standards here, and nothing's super "write home about it", but the bartenders are friendly and efficient, and the whole place has kind of a "Cheers-y" neighborhood vibe to it. People seemed to know each other and it wasn't very touristy like some of the other bars nearby. The bar also has a pool table, and I watched a lively game going on the night I was here. I look forward to being totally terrible at playing the next time we go! A Twisted Christmas Carol; Review Newport Playhouse Dec 1,…read more2025 Complicated. Not the play but the fact I and others, enjoying 3 days in Newport RI in a tour group, were basically a captive audience. "Dinner and a show" is how our itinerary put it. We ate a decent meal in the dining area and then all traipsed upstairs into this cozy little theatre. The stage was more than a proscenium because it projected out, bringing the actors into a more intimate relationship to the audience. (Just a note here: The seats were comfortable but the seat in front of you - seat pitch - was abysmally close. After 3/4 of an hour my knees began to hurt badly.) The play is a loose take on Dickens' Christmas Carol, with a 'Christmas past/Christmas present/Christmas future' structure. All action takes place in a small barbecue pub in west Texas. The proprietor (John Brennan), a grossly insensitive husband to his partner wife (Cass Caduto), is concerned for his business which is sliding downhill. Advice and antics from his live-in customer (Kol Daniel Cross) are scant help. The action unfolds with the help of a former employee (Rosa Nguyen) and the proprietor's former business partner (Matt Goldstein) who stole his barbecue sauce recipe years ago and has profited from it. Oh yes, that business partner is also the wife's former romantic partner, uh-oh. I could not find the author's name for this play. I suspect it was locally written by one or another of the actors or production staff. Maybe it was like a "Oh, we gotta put something together for our Christmas show" collaboration. The script produced a few jarring moments, as when the proprietor who has been in an accident and comatose in the hospital being visited by Christmas ghosts suddenly returns in full health. But the actors clearly enjoyed putting this on. The audience laughed and I think had fun watching although a few may not have had much experience with live performances. At the conclusion they started to leave and were surprised when the actors came out for a curtain-call bow. Ouch!

I cannot say enough good things about Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery. From the moment you arrive…read moreon their stunning property, you understand why this place is truly special. The Russell family has been crafting wine here since 1982, and that generational passion shows in every single pour. This isn't some corporate operation -- it's a fifth-generation family of vintners tending 80 acres of vineyard on a 435-acre farm , and you feel that love and care the moment you step on the grounds. The wines themselves are world-class. Their champagne-style sparkling wines are rated in the top 100 in the world and have even been served at the White House -- twice. And yet somehow they remain approachable and unpretentious. Their flagship Brut RJR offers compelling aromas of apples and toast, with fine tiny bubbles, crisp citrus, and a lengthy, satisfying finish -- at a price point that makes you feel like you've discovered a secret. The Atlantic Northeast's cool maritime climate and the farm's rich soils layered with granite over glacial outwash give the wines a gorgeous balance of luscious fruit and bright acidity that you simply won't find anywhere else. There are no wines on the planet that pair better with local New England seafood. The outdoor patio with vineyard views is absolutely beautiful , and the Friday evening Sunset Concert series makes this one of the most charming date-night or weekend destinations on the South Coast. Their winemaking philosophy uses ancient, traditional methods including those of Champagne and Burgundy -- minimal processing, maximum patience. You taste the difference. If you haven't visited Westport Rivers yet, you're missing one of Massachusetts' true treasures. Five stars isn't enough.

That's because it's on Prudence Island, another very cool place that few people bother to visit. Rossi Farm is located on Neck Farm Road, a dirt road that basically goes nowhere. Just up to the north part of the island and then stops. It's actually a great bike ride that has great views of the bay from all directions. Even in the summer you pretty much have the whole place to yourself. The farm has cows, chickens and goats and stinks like hell in the hot weather. Not really bad but like a farm is suppose to smell in hot weather I suppose. The farm has a stand on the west side of the road and every time we have been there nobody was around. Plenty of farm creatures checking us out but no people. The stand has different things according to the time of year and supply. Great corn, eggplant, squash, tomatoes and cukes are usually found and occasionally muffins and home made bread. A great treat to enjoy when on the island. Unfortunately no water or liquid so you better bring your own. The stand is strictly self serve and has a little box to place the money. The people living on the island take advantage of the fresh veggies and bread but few visitors know about it. So the next time or probably first time you visit Prudence Island, make sure you look for Rossi's Farm if you want some fresh produce. Just watch out for the cow and goat poop and the chickens trying to peck you on the legs and you will discover a very cool farm on a very cool and uncrowded island.
