Came in as a walk in for one person right when they open at 5pm. Hostess said I can grab a table and get a drink because the kitchen doesn't open until 5:25. So I ordered a drink ($33), looked at the menu and waited to be seated. Four to five parties came in and all had tables and got seated. Two parties for two people came in without reservation and got seated right away. So I waited for the hostess or server to come get me like everyone else. Take in mind I was seated right behind the hostess, so I was in eye view. I finally decided to leave and pay for my drink at 5:50. Then the person told me they could seat me. Totally different experience compare to Mr. Wong. Everyone from the hostess, GM, and server made sure my needs were met. Plus did more by creating a set meal that wasn't on the menu.

I've been coming to this delightful sushi restaurant for years. I love the dark ambiance. The lighting designer was a genius. My favorite items are the appetizers, which focus on a variety of modern sashimi preparations. Nice cocktail list and wines by the bottle or glass. Friendly service.

This is a fun place to start a night out. It is not traditional Japanese food but it's a fun twist. Our server was very sweet. The restaurant was packed so she took a bit to get to our table. When she arrived she was attentive and helpful. We started with delicious miso soup. Then we enjoyed the popcorn shrimp- prawns deep fried and covered in a yuzu chili Mayo. The bluefin tuna warayaki was to die for! Fresh pieces of tuna coated in rice crips on a Tasmanian wasabi leaf. You eat the whole thing and it's amazing! We had the chirashi roll, which had a little bit of everything in it. The s express roll was seared salmon with a tempura scallop inside. Both were good but not wowing. Overall a very fun place to go with great service!!

On a weekend dinner time, they were playing some loud, awful, weird techno music that seemed to be 80% of their idea of atmosphere. I had to talk very loudly to have anyone hear me and I had to ask others to repeat what they were saying. I have no clue why anyone thinks loud, fast-paced techno matches the Japanese impression (fusion/contemporary or not) they're trying to give off. Are they trying to drown out the nightclub next door? This place is definitely on the more expensive side, so I hope people are going for the atmosphere and style rather than the food, because a lot of the food you can get better for cheaper elsewhere... Based on price for taste alone, I wouldn't recommend a lot of the dishes here, so the below will just be based on flavor: -- Would recommend/standouts: Chicken karaage ($19) - huge pieces of fried bar food without the greasy feel Scampi tempura ($38) - so good; tasted like sweet shrimp but fried in heavenly golden batter; texture was so soft Lamb chop ($38) - fantastic; can't go wrong if you don't dislike lamb Duck breast ($39) - delicious; not too dry and the sauce pairs well Kit kat ($18) - perfect for green tea lovers; texture is nice without being too sweet Monaka ($16) - comes with one each of hazelnut and green tea; simple dessert done nicely -- Would not recommend: Vegetables ($16) - wasabi sauce doesn't seem to pair well with much; vegetables themselves were good and cooked well, but the sauce was super salty; I kept draping my vegetables everywhere trying to shake the sauce off Dragon egg ($23) - extremely sweet; worth it for your social media or whatever, but not to eat unless you like caramel and tooth-achingly sweet desserts -- Fine, but maybe not particularly worth ordering: Beef tataki ($29) - This price might actually be on the lower end for tataki, since I've had tataki elsewhere (in the US, at least) and you have to have good quality meat to make it a dish worth eating. I think it's worth paying for tataki if it's great, but this just wasn't bad. Lobster tacos ($18 for 2) - Maybe this was actually good, but I thought it was tasteless...so texture-wise it was good, but there wasn't any flavor to taste. Spicy tuna roll ($19) - Not bad, but I'd rather have cheaper sushi. Gyoza ($25) - Perfectly fine, but I'd rather go to Harajuku Gyoza or something.

Upscale sushi spot in downtown the rocks neighborhood harbor Sydney, Australia! I love the view of the chef's counter because you get to see the actions of the chefs cooking up the entrees or prepping the sashimi slices and sushi rolls! Fresh fish one can taste! Service was wonderfully fancy. They came by often to check in. One must order the Dragon's Egg for dessert! The presentation is amazing to see and how they melt it! When they melt it, the inside chocolate egg, has interesting fruity bites to eat with the colorful chocolate. Indulging in my sweets! Sake was warmly smooth. Great dining to splurge on here!

This is a nice restaurant with a beautiful ambiance. The service however, seemed a little sloppy. We had reservations and still had to wait 15min to be seated. Once seated, waitress #1 asked for our water preference but never gave us water until after food was served. Next waitress #2 came to get the order but walked away in the middle of our conversation with her. Finally, waitress #3 came and got our order in. After all this, the food came pretty quickly though and thankfully everything tasted good. Price is on the higher end but food was presented well and tasty.

Visited for the first time and it was a lovely experience! The sashimi platter and presentation of the dragon egg were definitely the highlight. The staff were also accommodating but the service was a bit slow. The soft shell crab and sushi were also delicious! Overall it was such a fun dinner and I would highly recommend, especially for celebrations.

The food was amazing! The sushi was very fresh and the flavors that each dish brought were delicious. Service was very good too! Definitely a place to go when in Sydney!

Welcome to Sake! Probably THE best Japanese restaurant in the world (coming from a New Yorker)... Service, Decor, Food, Cocktails are all 5-Star worthy. Chef Richard is a gastronomic creative genius and leads an incredibly talented team - he's super personable and brings pride to all things Aussie. The most spectacular dish was the delicate, yet incredibly flavorful snapper white soy with truffle infused in the sauce. This is not to say all the other dishes we tried weren't equally mouth watering - quite the contrary. The hiramasa kingfish was brilliantly fresh and was beautifully balanced with a coriander infused sweet ponzu with lime and jalapeño kosho. The Wagyu loin was superbly tender, perfectly cooked, and the accompanying sauces were spot on. The spider maki sets a new bar for any soft shell crab roll. We ordered probably 7 dishes in total. We'd advise ordering 5-6 staters and a main - definitely sit at the bar next to the kitchen if possible. Kudos on such a special spot - great for anniversaries and any other special occasions.

There was 6-7 people cooking on Friday night, one people at each station. Thus the food come out very quickly! We learn the hard lesson by making a mistake of ordering everting at once. Sure enough all the 8 dishes were delivered within 20 minutes.... make sure to place your order one to two dishes at a time. Food was good. Yakitori juicy, Hotate was fresh, seaweed salad, grilled mackerel, all dishes we ordered were pretty good. Old fashioned fries are a good deal (for Aussie price). Plenty of sake choices. You can choose from 100ml or 300ml so you can taste a little first, to see which one you like. I'll come back here again.

I did have a higher expectation with the food after reading all these 4/5 star reviews but nothing we ordered was really memorable. Maybe I did not order the right things? Good as a place to meet up with friends and have a drink but if you are looking for higher quality of Japanese fare, you might need to go somewhere. Just be careful the portion is tapas style and your bills can quickly added up if you want to have a full meal here.

(Please read October 2018 update, can't be arsed doing yet another review of Makoto, but the news…read moreis good!) This hurts. For 15 years I've been enjoying that feeling of having a special place thats pretty much perfect. Where the guys knew me and the food was way above the rest. Makoto was the best Sushi Train I'd ever been to and it was fully 1 minutes walk down the road. So I went a lot, I mean at least 800 times. The value was there. My favourites were the tempura king prawn hand roll, the king prawn and omelette hand roll and the most basic of all, the salmon sushi. Thing was, all the offerings were fresh generous and delicious. Last year a new owner came in. You don't need to read anymore if you, like me, know what that always means. The first to go was James who had been there from the start. Most of the staff went because they put in the ubiquitous computer screen ordering system. Then they removed all the old prawn dishes. All of them. Now you are lucky if you get a pre prepared frozen crumbed prawn covered in a mayo mess. Then they reduced the sizes of every dish on the train so the salmon was much smaller. All my favourites disappeared or were scrimped. Then they put all the prices up. The next thing to go was the queue, then the regulars stopped going. Now there's barely anyone there at 12 noon when there used to be a wait for ten to fifteen minutes. I'll still go now and then because its still fresh and its still close. The really sad thing is that I see people there who never saw what it used to be - they probably think that this is a pretty good place, they don't know what it was like. Sigh. Update October 2018 The tempura king prawns hand rolls are back!!!! The other day they had the old cooked prawn and mayonnaise gunkan on the train, its not back full time but at least it made an appearance! The salmon sashimi is no longer scrimped upon. Its back to its old size. Back to 5 stars for the prawn hand rolls alone. Thank you God, I really missed those things. And they are still on the blue plates, which have been bumped from $3.60 to $3.80 - so what - 20c!! Two words - yaa. hoo.

This a big call but I think this is the best sushi train in Sydney!! Genrally I don't like sushi…read moretrains but this is certainly an exception. The seafood is always fresh and of a high grade. However this does come at a price and you will certainly be paying for it. They have great Salmon sashimi but my favourites come off the menu, not the train and they are the omelette and king prawn hand roll and fisherman's soup. The Agedashi tofu ain't bad either ! I only wish less people knew how good this place is as sometimes the queue is pretty long.
