Sainte-Chapelle - Photo 11: Upper Chapel

Seeing other reviews, realized I never wrote one for here!…read more My visit was a few years ago though I recall it vividly--after perusing the nearby Marché aux Fleurs de Paris flower market and then the Conciergerie also on Île de la Cité, I arrived to the line outside the entrance to this church on Bd du Palais, with about 30-40 people ahead of me, about a few minutes before noon. Something to note, they are very strict on entry times here, due to limited capacity, and if you miss you time slot, they'll make you wait until the next available time. I learned this the hard way, not realizing some of the visitors in front of me were there for the next time slot after mine, so when they finished letting people in, my time slot was complete and they didn't let anyone else in until the next scheduled time with available capacity. So I ended up waiting an extra 30 minutes, and thankfully the 12:30 time slot had availability for me to enter. Once they scan your ticket, you're ushered into the Lower Chapel, which originally served as an everyday place of worship for lower level courtiers, servants and soldiers in the royal entourage. The vibe is dim and intimate, dedicated to the Virgin Mary with simpler stained glass windows, slender columns with painted ribbed vaults. The ceiling is colored an intense blue adorned with golden fleur-de-lys patterns (representing French royal heritage) and red columns with castle symbols (representing the Spanish heritage of Queen Blanche of Castile, mother of Louis IX). After about 10-15 minutes downstairs most visitors head upstairs to the Upper Chapel, which was a private chapel reserved for King Louis IX, his family, and honored guests, who accessed it directly via a gallery from the royal palace. This space is filled with soaring stained glass windows, each containing more than a thousand panels of glass, and depicting scenes from the Bible, from creation to the Passion of Christ. What an amazing space! The sunlight streaming through the vibrant colored glass was magical, it literally felt like seeing the room through rose-colored glasses. The only downside was the crowds, so if you have the chance I'd recommend getting an early or late time slot if you can.

The High Alter and Chancel area are incredibly beautiful. I have attached some photos of it, along with the Organ pipes above the Narthex. The Jesuit architects Étienne Martellange and François Derand, built the present building at the request of Louis XIII in the early seventeenth century. LOL What makes the church important is it's Baroque style, rather then the prevalent Gothic of the time. It's introduction changed Parisian religious architecture and is exquisite to see. On PBS Masterpiece Theater's Les Misérables, Cosette and Marius were married here. Sadly like Notre-Dame, Église Saint-Paul Saint-Louis du Marais was plundered during the French Revolution when many of its artworks were destroyed. Mass on Sunday is at 9:30 am, 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. https://www.spsl.fr/

That felt so good, and I felt so blessed and so much lighter afterwards. Best of all, It's a block away from the metro station, a few blocks from our hotel, and right across so many delicious restaurants, boulangerie and chocolates all in the heart of the fashion district, La Marais, Paris. Bonjour!

Walking up through Montmartre is good exercise in its own right, with the staircases near the top providing a wonderfully direct final approach as the white basilica rises above you. The surrounding neighborhood is beyond charming, and reaching the summit feels like a fitting culmination of exploring one of the city's most distinctive quarters. Once there, the sweeping view across Paris is spectacular, particularly from the broad steps beneath the basilica. The Romano-Byzantine architecture is striking up close, while the enormous gold mosaic inside gives you another reason to step away from the panorama and enter the church. Few places capture Paris quite so completely: beautiful architecture, a lively neighborhood, and that extraordinary city unfolding beneath you.

But the main draw was getting to have a private balcony attached to our room, perfect for a lil pain au chocolat and ppl watching. Also the sweetest people work at the reception desk. I got randomly fixated on the Swiss-made wood-paneled minifridge that looked like it's been around since the 1970s, but you know what? It's probably better made than most fridges today. If there's something you need to keep cold just remember to leave a key card in the electricity slot so it keeps running. What we didn't love -- the two twin beds pushed together which gradually scootched apart. But to be fair the Deluxe room we booked said it would either have a double bed or two twins. The bathroom was interesting. There isn't a big enough shield to block the shower water so, when you shower, it's like you're journeying deep into the rainforest. Everything in the bathroom -- toiletries, towels -- gets soaked. All in all though, the location is great, the rooms are cute, and this is a somewhat reasonably priced way to do a Paris stay with a balcony.

But most memorable was the attentive and warm staff!! As we were getting our bags from the car that delivered us, Violette, the front desk attendant at the time, came out to greet us and help us get our bags in. We arrived well before check-in time but when we asked if it was possible to get in our room early, she said for a small fee we could. She ushered us to the lounge to wait the few minutes until the room was being readied, offering us coffee and tea. A few minutes later she came in with a tray with espresso, tea, and a couple pastries and croissants. We could not have felt more welcomed and pampered. The fantastic service continued with Nadia - the breakfast host - where each morning she greeted us, tolerated our attempts to communicate in her language, and got to know our preferences. The breakfast buffet was perfectly tastefully laid out and tasty. We were treated to warm hugs on our last morning. And finally, when we were departing and trying to arrange an Uber ride, my App was not working. The front desk attendant at that time - Patricia - went above and beyond by helping us arrange a ride and keeping us updated. Merci beaucoup mesdames!!
