An amazing and historically significant church that isn't even on most people's radar. A must see once you learn about the history.
St. Christopher's is one of the most important and oldest buildings of worship in the city of Siena, and the earliest evidence of its existence dates back to the 11th century under the name "Ospizio di San Cristoforo" found by the cleric Guido di Domenico. Certainly work on its construction was completed in the very early twelfth century when the bell, now kept in the Palazzo Pubblico, bearing the date 1109 was hoisted. The ringing of this now-discontinued bell refers to some of the most important pages of Sienese history since before the construction of the Palazzo Comunale by the Republic of Nine, the "bell council" that met in the cloister behind the church was the one who made decisions. It can be assumed that within these walls the Battle of Montaperti and the dedication of the city to the Virgin were discussed; these spaces then held the municipal insignia and war trophies. read more
