If possible, this duomo is even more amazing than the duomo in Florence. The frescoes and statues definitely rival the well-known ones in the Renaissance city, and the artwork equals, if not exceeds, its rival. The bonus here is that the crowds are smaller and Siena is so charming, and the locals are so friendly. The cathedral and museums are definitely worth the trip to this lovely city. read more

One thing you start learning when you go to Italy, there are a lot of amazing Cathedrals, this is no exception! The highlight of this cathedral for me was being able to go all the way up and have a view of the entire city! It was beautiful. You can see the city square from here, which is also huge. It can get pretty packed after 12pm, so I recommend trying to come around 10:30am right when it opens! read more

The most gorgeous cathedral I've been to so far! I love the alternating black and white marble...so unique. This is a wonderful example of Italian Gothic architecture and I spent over an hour taking it all in. My favorite part? The incredible mosaic floors. I couldn't stop looking at them and feeling guilty that I was walking on something so beautiful! I hold a degree in music performance, so the library with illuminated choir manuscripts was a real treat. From the floor to the ceiling, this cathedral is a gem. read more

This was an amazing Cathedral. Such a huge and magnificently built Church. Black and white stonework of this cathedral was such a change than the other churches we visited. It is the finest examples of Italian Gothic architecture.The walls and columns of the church's interior are covered with black and white marble. If you're visiting Siena, take the time to visit what I like to call, the 'Zebra church.' It's very unique in that the church is striped both inside and outside - very unexpected but very cool! On the day that I visited, locals were honoring their patron saint (I can't recall who that is, now), and we were privileged enough to see some of the town's children wearing traditional Medieval clothing, parading through Siena's main square along with locals following. They made a stop in the church itself to pay homage to their patron saint. Architecturally, this Gothic church is quite beautiful and worth the visit. As one reviewer mentioned, the marble floors are amazing - I probably spent as much time walking around looking at the floors as I did looking at the church itself! Don't forget to visit the library! read more

One of my favorite churches I visited while in Italy and we saw a lot during our two weeks. What stands out about this one is how unique it is. The black and white marble is beautiful and that dome?! Wowzas so breathtaking. We were luck enough to visit during a time when the floors were uncovered and I can see why they protect them normally such works of art. The Piccolomini Library is beautiful as well. My neck was quite sore from all the staring up between the ceiling in the library and the dome. The exterior is just as detailed and exquisite as the interior. I wished I had binocular so I could take in all the details. read more

I've been to many cathedrals in Italy and in my opinion this is the most beautiful (keep in mind that St. Peter's Basilica in Rome is not a cathedral so I'm not counting that). The exterior architecture and the interior artwork and architecture are breathtaking and it's a must-see if in Siena. read more
