A few years ago, I had an opportunity to join friends on an unforgettable fishing trip. Our…read moredestination was Lac Poutrincourt, a large lake in north central Quebec, Canada. Until relatively recently, Lac Poutrincourt was accessible only by float plane, but the leasing of nearby forests to timber companies by the provincial government resulted in the construction of hundreds of miles of dirt roads. For a small fee, visitors can pay to use these roads to access the lake for recreational pursuits. Located on the shores of Lac Poutrincourt, Domaine Poutrincourt Outfitter was established to manage the hunting and angling within this 188 square mile territory that includes Lac Poutrincourt, Lac Buade, and the surrounding forests. You can choose to stay in the main lodge or in one of the 13 remote cabins that are scattered along the shorelines of the two connected lakes. Domaine Poutrincourt Outfitters is equipped to provide you with everything you'll require for your hunting and/or fishing adventures, including hunting and fishing licenses, tackle and bait, and a modest selection of groceries, toiletries, and camping supplies. As these lakes are vast, boats are essential, and Domaine Poutrincourt Outfitter supplies boats, motors, and fuel for all of its paying guests. When planning your trip, consider that their fishing camps comfortably sleep 6 - 8 people, and it is recommended that each boat carry no more than two adults, so plan on renting between 3 - 4 boats for the average trip. Depending upon where you are traveling from, getting to Lac Poutrincourt can be an adventure in and of itself. As we were traveling from Boston, our trip included a 15 hour drive, which could be longer or shorter due to the fact that many of the roads are undeveloped, and may not be easily passable under certain weather conditions. Once we arrived at the main lodge and loaded our gear into our rented boats, we embarked on the most exhilarating aspect of our journey. We had chosen to stay in the one camp that was located on Lac Buade, and to get there, we had to navigate the river connecting Lac Poutrincourt to Lac Buade. This river, Riviere Normandin, was long, winding, and contained several difficult class rapids. It took more than two hours by boat to reach our camp, and once there, unpacking began for the week of fishing that was ahead of us. The remote camps are designed for do-it-yourself adventurists. You supply your food and fishing gear and the camp provides the rest. Our camp was comfortable and contained bunk rooms, a living and dining room, a bathroom with composting toilets and showers, and plenty of potable water. Fuel depots are associated with each camp to allow visitors to fuel their boats as much as needed during their stay. We spent our week in complete solitude, since Riviere Normandin provided a natural barrier to all other anglers. Nights were short and days were long, which allowed for approximately 15 hours of daylight in which to pursue trophy walleye, northern pike, and whitefish. At night, we took our conversations to the front porch, along with our drinks and a few select cigars. The cries of Loons and the croaking of frogs were the only sounds for miles. Once, a float plane flew overhead, which was our only reminder that there was a civilization that we would have to reintegrate into by week's end. The fishing was fantastic, and the sheer numbers and sizes of the fish we caught that week were mind boggling. If you've ever thought about visiting a wilderness lake with a close group of friends, and enjoying the solitude and recreational opportunities that such an environment provides, I strongly encourage you to consider Domaine Poutrincourt Outfitters for your next excursion. It's close enough to get to by automobile, but feels impossibly far away.
