We were unable to speak with James during the initial call, rather his assistant (Sue Thoma -- a very nice and upbeat person) said that we would have to first pay James $250 just to have an initial meeting during which he would decide whether he was interested in doing our job. We politely declined and were then about to move on to our second choice. A short while later Sue called back and said that James would welcome the opportunity to do our job and that there would not be a fee for the initial meeting. The meeting was held a couple days later and James indeed confirmed that he looked forward to doing the landscape work at our house. He presented a contract the next day which contained a $7,500 "Garden Design Fee." This was a bit unusual as most larger landscape contractors include the design as part of their overall service. James explained that he has had problems with customers getting his design and then going elsewhere. He also noted that the contract provided that if we retained his company, the "Garden Design Fee" would be credited against the overall project cost. Because our neighbors had assured us that James pricing would be fair, we proceeded to sign the contract and pay the fee. During the initial meeting, James had assured us that the design would be completed within two weeks and that the entire project would be completed two months. After submitting the signed contract and payment of the fee, James then advised that he would not be able to get to our design for four to six weeks. This was disappointing, however believing that we had the right person for the job we were accepting of the delay. Toward the end of the six weeks my wife contacted James to find out how the design was coming along and when we could expect to see the landscape plan. James assured her that the plan was coming along "nicely" and that he would be in a position to meet with us one week later to go over it. As it turned out, we were going to be out of town the week he wanted to meet so we set the meeting for the following week. James assured her that the landscape design would be complete and that his company would be ready to immediately move forward with the work. Then yesterday, one week before the scheduled meeting, we receive a letter from James (not even a phone call) saying that "due to circumstances beyond my control I am not going to be able to" provide the landscape design. The particular reason James stated in his letter was that he: "...devoted much thought and time to it and ... I am just not 'feeling it'." I do not feel that James Martin/Gulfside Landscaping is trustworthy. I will not recommend that others use their services.

I hired James with A Cut Above Landscaping to address a serious water intrusion issue at one of my…read morerental properties. He recommended installing a basin drain system as the solution, but unfortunately the work was completely ineffective. The crew dug up the parking lot and front of the house to install the drainage system, but left a huge mess behind. There were trenches and uneven areas throughout my parking lot and even extending onto my neighbor's property. The entire job felt rushed, like the priority was finishing as quickly as possible rather than making sure it was done correctly. The drainage system itself was poorly designed. The drains were not installed up against the house where the flooding and water intrusion was actually occurring, and the front of the property was not properly graded to direct water toward the drain. As a result, the system did little to solve the original issue. When I reached back out and asked James to come back and help correct the problems, his response was that they were "already barely making any money on the job." That response made it seem like the focus was more on profit than standing behind the work or making things right for the customer. Overall, I was very disappointed with both the workmanship and the customer service, and I would not recommend using this company for drainage or water intrusion issues.

I would give NO stars, in fact I would give a -5 review if possible. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! I…read moreoriginally rated them 5 stars until I got back to my vacation home to find lots of problems with their work. Just HORRIBLE! They installed some sod, 8 new small plants and a 3 station irrigation system which did not cover the yard. 1. They tried to charge an additional $7500 after bidding job and getting paid $12K which was the contract price! And it was a joke what they did. I have no idea how they EVER get a good rating. 2. They put an irrigation line on my neighbors side of the fence that was found when I hired another company to connect to my well, which they refused to do. No one asked nor told the neighbor nor I if that was ok. And they refuse to do anything about it! Neighbor has a rock yard and was out of town when it was done, so he nor I could tell till now. Turns out this new contractor had worked for them and quit two years ago due to issues just like mine. 3. They told me they winterized the system last fall, but did not drain lines so the back flow valve burst. They refused to repair it without being paid $7500! I had to hire someone else to fix it. 4. I was told they installed the remote module in the system so I could control it with my phone from Texas, but they did not. I had to pay someone else $100 to install it. 5. I told them the controller was faulty and was running 3 times a day. I had cleared it and it did not still stay on schedule. I got two $600 water bills for two months before they would replace it. BOTTOM LINE...DO NOT HIRE THEM! THEY LIE, THEY ARE SCAMMERS AND THEY OVER PROMISE AND TRY TO CHARGE YOU MoRE THAN CONTRACT PRICE! PLUS THEY DO NOT FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEIR WARRANTY! NOT TO MENTI0N SOME OF MY NEW IRRIGATION SYSTEM IS ON MY NEIGHBORS PROPERTY AND THEY WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!! DILLON IS NOT HONEST AND SPOKE TO ME HORRIBLY. CALL SOMEONE ELSE!
