This is the pub I mostly try to avoid having to visit in Hendon. The drinks are extortionately…read moreexpensive for the area (i.e. expect to pay over £5 per drink for spirits and mixers), and there are no cold soft drinks at all, they are all on shelves behind the bar, and the fridges are used only for alcoholic beverages. I had expected this to mean that a soft drink would be cheap, but it is not. You are served a mini bottle (less than half a pint) of warm coke and charged about £2 for it. The staff do not seem bothered about the nasty warmth of their drinks, I just got a shrug and a kind of "that's just how it is here" response. The food is probably the redeeming feature, being reasonably priced and tasty hearty fare, if a little bog-standard pub grub (but then it is a pub!). The only problem here is the seemingly random amount of time you wait for it. Sometimes the food comes quickly, and other times you find yourself asking what has happened, and after some embarrassment on the part of the staff, find that they have forgotten the large group of you all sitting there looking hungry. The interior is clean, well maintained and comfortable, with a large number of tables and chairs so you can sit down to eat. It is however very dark inside, not so much a problem at nights, but it seems very dark compared to outside during the day, making it a bit weird to eat lunch in. The pub shows sporting events on big screens, which are much larger than usual pub screens, though if you aren't there for the sports, you might want to avoid the pub on these occasions as it becomes very loud and crowded at these times, or you could sit outside and watch the world go by on the tables they have out on the street. Overall, not somewhere I go unless I can't force an alternative!

Cool space for the concert, in line with the trend that you can see at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Kauffman Performing Arts Center in Kansas City - "in the round" concerts where the audience wraps around the musicians. Only a couple quibbles: not a lot of seating on the outside for before the concert or during intermission, and the need for a better system of getting people out, as there was a bit of a jam (I know this is something that comes up in any large venue, but some places manage it better than others). Definitely worth a visit!

As it's in a prime location, on a boat(!), in the river(!), I thought it would be super touristy, surviving off online offers, etc. My first visit was for a girls lunch. We had afternoon tea with bubbles! The finger sandwiches were nice - there was beef, cucumber and egg may and ham and mustard, a lot of nice cakes and freshly made scones. They had their bottoms cut off and when we asked about them (as we were curious), the staff apologised and said it was because they were slightly burnt and we were offered a bottle of prosecco! There was definitely enough food! My second visit was just a few weeks ago. We went for the lunch menu. We had Gratin of Baby Leeks, Quail Egg, Parmesan Crisp, Watercress and Mustard Dressing, Langoustine with Chili and Lemon Butter, Toasted Sourdough, and Smoked Haddock Fish Cake, Parsley Sauce to start and then for mains we ordered the Fish and Chips and Slow Roasted Pork Belly Garlic & Fennel, Slaw. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted REAL good but not as memorable as the fish and chips. The fish and chips was REALLY good. It was so fresh and the fish was really well seasoned. It was huge but not too much batter and the batter wasn't overly greasy either. I could SO eat that again! The service was brilliant both times. The staff are smiley and friendly. The setting in the restaurant is beautiful although the toilets need a little updating. Beware that the river can be a bit choppy on windy days. Worth visiting if you want a slightly special lunch!

The Kings Oak is the main pub in the park situated as it is right by the visitors centre and the forest car park. It's a place that is certainly welcome after a long hike where lunch cravings take over and aching thighs scream for pity. The place itself is not only a pub but a full blown venue that can be used for weddings and as a hotel though I have to admit the decor in the brochure that proudly sits on each table does seem to less Notting Hill and more My Big Fat Greek Wedding, still it may be perfect for some. We had lunch in the 'gastropub', a place where if you look (not too) hard the theme of the brochures is very reflected. The massive cherubs, neon pink walls, over the top mirrors and plastic antlers are all there if you look hard enough. We didn't come here for the cherubs though, we came here for the food and embibement; that is something they did well. The whole place had a great atmosphere. We had a couple of pasta dishes, some huge grilled cheeses and a fish and chips. The food itself wasn't bad but not at 'gastropub' levels in either presentation or complexity. The satisfying fish was crisp and well cooked but a little greasy and the chips tasty, chunky but hardly crispy. The other food was tasty and offered good value. Overall this isn't a bad pub if you like some cherub spotting and a decent meal after a long walk.
