I know Pastor Black and his wife and they are a fine Christian family and the church has hosted Evangelists to speak and they have some fine folks here. The building is small inside but we'll constructed inside. The Church has a tract ministry going. They teach only out of the Bible and don't employ a study guide or Church publication like do many churches do now. It's a small Congregation but thriving. The carpet and paint work inside really enhance the sanctuary. I highly recommend a visit here if you feel led by the Spirit to come.

I was recommended the place by two very good friends but as I approached and arrived, I felt out of place as a female Protestant from a Presbyterian background. I genuinely questioned myself: "what the heck am I doing here?!" but very quickly, as I eased into the first day, my friend Marco's encouragement that "you will have plenty of physical space and the emotional space to meet God and have your prayers answered and exceeded" were certainly true. The sparse dorm-like room is air conditioned with your own bathroom and shower. A printed schedule of meal times, mass times are in each room, but otherwise, you are here for a self-directed retreat. I recommend you bring your own pillow and the one provided was high and firm. The meals are held in the original Leland Stanford farm house with watery window panes. There is a library open for retreatants and though I didn't think I'd find anything I would like, I ended up reading two Henri Nouwen books cover to cover. Whether you talk with other retreatants is up to you and them throughout your stay. There is a separated silent dining room and the main dining room where chatting is allowed. I arrived with a boatload of books and articles I'd printed out, but it was the long walks in the walnut orchard, along the creek, and along the vineyards that yielded the most interesting insights and answers. I ended up doing a sort of "memento mori" meditative walk along the numbered vines from 1 to 78 where I stopped at each number and went through each year of my life. Long story long, the new Clairveaux Abbey is a beautiful retreat center that provides you with plenty of physical and emotional space to encounter our real God in quiet and very emphatic ways.

A lot of UCD students apart of AACF, Navigators, and Cru came to this church even though it was not in Davis. I have attends this church for 5 years now. I love their expository style of teaching, how they go through different books of the Bible. They preach the Gospel in every sermon. They are bold to preach Scripture as it is, not shying away from hard passages. They present Scripture with deep care and accuracy. They are also part of the Acts29 organization!
