In short the Sacramento Bee is disrespectful and dishonest.
The Sacramento Bee is at best incompetent and at worst illegally misleading their customers. It is no surprise that this paper is failing. Technically, as the sole major paper of a region it shouldn't have problems, but due to how they run the business itself, brand value has fallen hard to the ground, and customer satisfaction is immeasurably low.
I had signed up solely for access to the Sunday coupons. I actually do not read the paper as the news is exceptionally late even for a newspaper, and the articles can be considered all Op-ed with little actual journalism. With that being said I had two subscriptions. One of these was set to run out. I had agreed to a year of the Sunday Bee, under the pretense that once that contract was fulfilled, the paper would stop and I could reevaluate if I still wanted the paper or not. This however, turned out not to be the case as other former customers can tell you. I continued to receive the paper and wasn't sure if my time was up or not.
I received a call about a month and a half after apparently my subscription was up. They informed me of such, and wanted me to renew. The cost was laughably ridiculous at something like $80 when I originally paid $20. I told them that I was not interested in renewing and that I had wanted the subscription to end at the end of the agreed upon year. They claimed that they had provided me a "courtesy" by continuing to send the paper for 6 weeks, but that now they have a bill for $30 for the papers owed. I was of course taken aback by the audacity of the logic they used.
If I hire a babysitter for a week, we have a deal for a week, and then I can reevaluate if I want to go with that said babysitter again. If that babysitter decides on their own to show up and watch my kids without my knowledge, and says here is a bill for the services performed, should I in fact pay them for a service never requested, never mentioned by her, and never stating the said cost for this "courtesy" before providing it?
The logic is the same regarding the bee. They are sneaky, shylock tricksters who are no better than the creeps in the windowless van, with a sign saying free candy and they are less apologetic.
I informed the bee that I will not pay their bill, that the decision to continue services was one sided and without agreement, and that they have NO legal teeth to collect, as I used to be a bill collector myself. Of course they did not know my previous occupation and they implied on the phone that there will be "serious repercussions" if I do not hand over my wallet in their extortion scheme for the "courtesy" that they provided.
I am not the type who just allows myself to be threatened, especially by a washed up, third rate newspaper who only stays afloat by likely threatening other people like the elderly and secretly billing people. UNETHICAL, IMMORAL, PROBABLY ILLEGAL.
It should stand to reason that if this is how The McClatchy Company runs this brand in its portfolio, than other McClatchy Company brands are likely also doing shady business. They do not have 100% market share in the Sacramento area. Placer County has papers that can provide and do provide the coupons I seek, and do so for pennies as a subscription cost. I urge you that if you absolutely need coupons, try The Placer Herald or The Auburn journal. This is why I have decided to forever cut ties with this company. I will no longer feed the pig. The pig needs a diet. The pig should never bite the hands that feed them. The hands that feed them turn pigs into bacon, and then consume it.
In conclusion, I and the general public would be fools to continue to support as crooked of a business as The McClatchy Company and their flagship toilet-paper The Sacramento Bee. read more
