I've been wanting to go on one of the mill tours for a long time and it was better than I expected…read more I live and work in Biddeford and went with a group of other people, including a few who actually worked in the mills back in the day. It was described as a two hour tour & it ran for about two and a half hours. This was a good thing because the tour wasn't rushed and everyone's questions were answered. The mills are being renovated and rebuilt at an astonishing pace so if you want to go, do it within the next few years. The price was $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for students, and it was well worth it. I posted a few pictures and there's MUCH more to see. Quick update (10/19/13): The mill tours are done for the season. Most of the tour takes place on unheated spaces and it's getting cold. If you're interested in checking this out, bookmark it and do it in Spring 2014 when they start up again. You don't want to miss this and the mills are being filled at an amazing rate so it won't look like this for much longer. Quick update (7/29/14): They're not doing mill tours this year. I'm not sure why but there's a lot of construction. Hopefully they'll start the tours again soon.

I know a ton about the history of Porsches, but I actually learned something new from the signage on the 1955 Porsche 356, namely, that the car was marketed as the "Continental," because the importer believed that Americans felt more strongly about cars with names than numbers. Now I understand why the 356 A models were called the "Speedster." Museums are for education! My only suggestion for improvement is to have at least one sign explaining how co-founder Miles Prentice came to love collecting and restoring cars. To people who live in the community and know the background, it might seem like bragging, but to those of us from faraway places, it's education. We visited on a Monday in April, and I appreciated that the museum is open every day of the week, including the "off season."

Since we haven't had a "date day" for awhile, I scheduled the VIP tour for the both of us for the next day. We arrived and the guy couldn't find our reservation at first. It was handwritten on a piece of paper. Paid for the tour, had to wait about 10-15 minutes because there was only the one guy and there was an older man chatting him up. We finally got started and I do have to say the cars are gorgeous. We are huge car fans, so this was fun. But the guy skipped the ones he didn't seem to like. That's okay - we did go back and look at them. But that was it. I still don't understand what the VIP part was - if it was just having a tour guide, i would have paid the $12/person fee instead and done the tour myself. We were kind of expecting to see some cars no one else gets to see or something else for that much more money. Oh well, live and learn. It's worth the $12/person, but do NOT pay for the VIP tour. It's a waste of money. The cars are definitely worth it!

As we walked in we were greeted by a curator (I'm sorry I don't remember his name) who was amazing. He offered a tour of the museum and stated after his tour we could walk around as we pleased. This man was a wealth of knowledge and even had so good humor to add to the information. I was so intrigued by what he was saying and showing that I didn't even take pictures. Next time we are in town I think we will go back again when we have even more time to spend!

Usually, there is only one tour guide and it was supposed to be Anne only but Ross joined in as well. The Old Port Culinary Walking Tour is a foodie tour with a mix of history and culture. Our group consisted of 13 people. The tour starts at Andy's Old Port Pub with an introduction from our tour guides. At Andy's Old Port Pub, we were seated in the backroom and had a seasoned, grilled fresh haddock with house-made pickled vegetables, pico de gallo and lime crema in a corn tortilla and Andy's house Lager. Ross talked about the suspicious happenings and history at Andy's Old Port Pub. They both talked about Harbor Fish Market which was right across the street and how the seafood never see the back of a truck. I thought the fish taco was okay and was probably my least favorite food item from the whole tour. Andy's house Lager was very smooth and I really enjoyed it. Then, we walked next door to Gilberts Chowder House where we had a choice of Clam Chowder, Haddock Chowder, Corn & Chicken Chowder, Seafood Chowder, or Seafood Chili. I chose the Clam Chowder. The Clam Chowder was thick and not as creamy as I usually like my clam chowders. Here, Anne was showing us pictures of lobster abnormalities. After having our chowder, we walked to the historic U.S. Custom House and old fishing docks. We even got a postcard of the old fishing docks which was a nice souvenir. Next, we stopped at Rigby Yard and were seated in a small private room. We were offered several drink options; I chose a glass of prosecco. We had the Fresh Maine Lobster Roll with fresh Maine lobster meat Maine-style, tossed lightly in mayo, lemon, and sea salt served on a brioche roll with chips. The lobster was definitely fresh and good. The last two stops were dessert spots: Dean's Sweets and The Gelato Fiasco. We had a needham which is a confectionery dessert bar made from sugar, chocolate, coconut, and potato and we had the option to choose another truffle. I chose a blueberry one. At The Gelato Fiasco, we were able to choose 2 different flavors. Funny enough, I had went to The Gelato Fiasco the night before and it really is delicious gelato. I was glad to try different flavors. The tour finished about 1:45pm. The tour guides thanked us for spending our time together. The Portland: Old Port Culinary Walking Tour was fun and I enjoyed meeting the other people in our group. Anne and Ross were very knowledgeable with Portland's history and food scene. They had good recommendations for other things to do in Portland. The food we had on the tour was okay according to my opinion, but it was definitely a good variety of Maine dishes.

Many programs for children which is nice. Free tech time appointments so you can work with a librarian to answer questions. During the winter they tend fires in their reading rooms.
