After a long day of waking, we ended up at this taqueria and it didn't disappoint. Service is amazing and the tacos are delicious!! I highly recommend the nopales tacos and cochinita pibil.

The food is really good. Delicious. Well made and a fantastic menu with creative and satisfying vegetarian options. The problem we had was with the service. The woman that helped us must have been new. There were 2 other young men helping her and so we had 3 people taking our order. I am fluent in Spanish and told them we wanted the tacos de plátano 3 times but they brought out the tacos de Jamaica. It was fine because they were delicious and we didn't want to waste food. My son is a very picky eater and we asked that his quesadilla have only cheese with nothing on top. It cane out covered in sour cream and avocado. We were scraping it off and the servers and bar tender were watching us and laughing. They were all very immature and continually watched us and laughed at us while we were eating. I had to ask the bartender several times if the chips for the guacamole or fried with anything containing flour because my daughter has celiac and will get very sick if there's anything with wheat flour. The man was dismissive and didn't take me seriously. I know it's annoying to be eating gluten-free but it's not by choice that we are eating this way it's because my daughter has an auto immune disease and can get very sick. We wished we sat downstairs because the woman downstairs was lovely. The upstairs staff was young and immature. It is not enjoyable eating dinner whole people look and laugh, I mad direct eye contact with them to let them know I saw them but they continued. Needless to say, we left no tip. We have never had service so bad in all of Mexico. The food is delicious. The menu is varied and fantastic. The service was very disappointing.

Friendly service, nice rooftop and yummy tacos. nothing crazy or complicated plates. simple and straightforward. Place looks clean, we came when there was not alot of people so we got our food fast, nopales and vegan chicharron tacos are yummy. They have some mezcal choices and tequila as well

We ate here on our last night in the city. We'd had a lot of "fancy" meals through out the week and just needed to grab some tacos and beers. They have a whole page of vegetarian tacos but it's primarily a traditional taco and deep dish pizza (?!) place. Great upstairs patio and cool decor. Service was friendly and prompt. One of the few places with TVs up and on in the bar area. Definitely a more American establishment we only ate tacos, esquitas, and guac. Everything hit the spot and was super filling. I barely finished my 3 tacos and I'm usually a pretty big (over)eater. I think I only give 4 stars because as good as it is, we had some amazing meals throughout the city and this one falls a bit behind other similarly priced experiences.

If you're looking for cheap delicious tacos, margaritas/beer, this is the place to come. The tacos are surprisingly huge and the taste is insane. Make sure to eat on the rooftop for some cool views of the city.

If you are looking for a nice casual place to satisfy your cravings for mexican style tacos, then we highly recommend this place. We ordered a little bit of everything: tacos con queso, tacos costra, and tacos volcan. The guacamole was fresh, however, the salsas that came with it were described to be spicy but did not meet our expectations- we were looking forward for that mexican kick!. The spiciness level is catering to tourists. The rooftop is beautiful but I would come during late afternoon or night time because there is very little shade.

No idea what has happened in recent months but Please note, mine is the Most positive review in the Last week--both other reviewers wanted to put ZERO stars! BE WARNED!!! To start with the positives: Like the decor, liked that they take cc (although not AmEx), like that they offer vegan options. Unfortunately this is one of those 'don't fall for pretty looks' warnings. May work for unususpecting gringos but will fall short for anyone who actually grew up on 'real' Mexican food. I ordered the 3 vegetarian options tacos (2 jaimaca & 1 one mole con plátano) And 1 Argentina chorizo taco Vegetarian tacos: I Really appreciated the paper thin tortillas, the cream sauce and them even offering vegan options. Unfortunately the Jimaixa one--was waaaay too super limey for my taste. The second one also had a super strange grit in them. While I Loved The mole sauce, I was expecting/hoping for a more soft plantain; mine was tough, chewy and not even edible--I took two bites, scraped off the mole to use for my chorizo taco and kept the rest on my plate. Half the chorizo was burnt black--see photo. Oh yes and I love salsa but all the options here were all too spicy for me to even use. As if my bad taco experience wasn't bad enough, I waited an extra 7 minutes to get the bill I had to request 3 times. The waiter than cane over and twice told me I had to put the tip first. I have waitresses before and appreciate servers so Even if I have a disappointing food experience--like I did here, I still tip the waiter. I put in 15 pesos, $1 US converted which was 10% of my bill. The waiter then asked the other server how much I tipped, when told he just swiped the card and said nothing, no thank you or anything even though tipping is extra in Mexico and not customary. So this ending made left an even worst taste in my mouth over the entire experience. This feels more like a late night 'drunk tacos' option than a sober looking 'for amazing affordable tacos' experience. Unfortunately I left here incredibly frustrated and still craving something. So Until I find that place here in SMA, I will stick to my authentic street tacos and grateful servers.

Great food, crappy service. Benefit of the doubt being given since it's a holiday today. Great ambiance!

First, he brought out a very big bowl of tortilla chips. They were excellent as was the accompanying pico de gallo. I had the chicken street tacos, which were also terrific. She went to this particular traditional restaurant known for their signature dish, Molcajete. The term first refers to a Mexican mortar bowl made of basalt volcanic rock standing on three stubby legs. The same term also refers to the food inside. It's quite simple because it's all about the ingredients and the execution. Jamie W and I ordered the MX$550 Mix Volcanic Bowl where they grilled large amounts of arrachera (skirt steak), chicken, and cecina (cured beef) while heating up the molcajete. The meat was then layered in the bowl along with nopales (cactus), green onion, chiles, peppers, and queso blanco cheese. A spicy green chile verde sauce was drizzled all over the gluttonous mix (Photo 7). Fresh guacamole and creamy refried beans were served on the side (Photo 4). A stack of freshly made tortillas was provided in order to gorge on all of the hearty indulgence which continues to stream well after its arrival at the table. The total amount could've easily served four ravenous people with both the arrachera and nopales the delectable standouts. Out of blissful ignorance, we both ordered salads as if the volcanic bowl wasn't going to satisfy us. Jamie had the MX$135 Mixed Salad with lettuce, grape tomatoes, cucumber slices, red onion, pasilla chiles, mushrooms, and a rosette of avocado slices (Photo 8). I went with the MX$200 House Salad with lettuce, hearts of palm, cubes of chihuahua cheese, green olives, grape tomatoes, and red onion (Photo 9). Both were more than freshly satisfying as we were filling up on housemade tortilla chips with red salsa and fresh pico de gallo (Photo 5). The space was cavernous with plenty of room for large parties as families converged on this place. We could totally envision live music performances in here, especially with a long, fully stocked bar beckoning. Although I've seen mocajetes on random Mexican menus around San Francisco, I agree with Pati that this type of place would be quite successful stateside. If you're planning a trip to San Miguel de Allende, I recommend following Pati's advice. From our third stop, Le Pegaso (review: https://yelp.to/rmPAJsgLVf), we had to cross the cobblestone streets around the central plaza, Jardin Allende. Normally an uneventful stroll, it felt more precarious after three bar stops. We made it without injury though. This spot was a spacious, more traditional restaurant with two bars in front. Our group was seated around a dining table. I noticed our Tequila Paloma was a bit skimpier this time (Photo 7), perhaps an acknowledgement that we were tapering off our alcoholic consumption. However, we ended up with the evening's best plate, a pair of Emmoladas, an enchilada-like house specialty filled with shredded chicken and covered liberally in a savory-sweet dark chocolate mole sauce (Photo 8). I would definitely have that again. This obscure place from outside, when you walk in becomes what appears to be a Hacienda along with a patio, Terraza and balconies all around and cantina where you walk in! Not only was this place beautiful in the most traditional of Mexican styles, with tiled and wrought iron stairs to upper balconies, built in shelves and niches withing stone, wallpapered and muralled walls, a typical bar inlaid with the structure with magnificent woodwork and an excellent bartender I might add, clay flower pots galore hanging from the balcony flooring, and an incredible full skylight, wall to wall, but that's not the best of it. The food. The food was magnificent. I have had many a meal in Mexico, I have tried many, many styles of regional cuisine, but I had never ever had the specialty of this house - the Enmolada! The unique specialty of the house at La Cocina Café del Viajero are Enmoladas which are a dish consisting of tortillas in mole sauce... stuffed with fillings of almost any inkling! Enmoladas are a established indigenous dish made with corn tortillas that is coated in mole sauce. This is what I had to have. First let me mention that the food here is incredible, overall. We obviously started with bottled water, a couple of okay Margaritas and some Modelos. As is the custom, we had the Guacamole, which was extraordinarily excellent, with homemade chips, really, really good chips. Someone at the table ordered the Enchilada Capital with Mexican rice - extraordinary and very picoso! To make a long story short, my order of the Enmolada was exquisite. Most folk like me, were only familiar with enchilada sauce, but Enmolada sauce is unique. The enchiladas are smothered in mole sauce, offering a exceptional merge of flavors that stretch from spicy and sweet to savory and smoky. Totally overwhelming the palate, as your tastebuds go in a freefall. They compacted shredded chicken, then rolled it, then garnished it with fresh toppings of crema and cheese. Wow! Needless to say, this was an experience! An exquisite location, excellent service, terrific atmosphere and one of the most life changing taste adventures I had in Mexico. Try an Enmolada, maybe here, it's terrific.

Staffed by three buddies who have all worked in high end restaurants (here in San Miguel as well as the US and Europe), this tiny establishment doesn't even have a sign outside (just take down the address and you'll see a sign that says "Hotel" by the door. Enter and ascend a flight of stairs and it'll be on your right. The meal begins with chips and a warm black bean dip (made with exotic ingredients they'd needed to pick up the previous day in something that sounded like a drug deal!). Next order the mushroom soup--a highlight of our 7 day trip to San Miguel. We also shared an order of guacamole (excellent as you'd expect, with thick chunky chips), and an order of Requeson (never heard of that, but turned out to be a cheese log with spicy/tangy flavor, served with hot corn tortillas). For mains, we had the torts de lingua (delicious if you're not weirded out by beef tongue), duck floutas, and the pork dish (Costilla en Abodo Oaxaqueno), which had excellent flavor but was a battle (large bone in the middle so difficult to eat). They've only been open for a few months and they have a few kinks to work out--the menu is not organized in a logical way (green salad and mushroom soup appear at the end rather than first). Meals did not all arrive together, but to be fair we were a large party (8), and ordered multiple items per person. They also need to update their Google entry, which failed to note that they're closed on Tuesdays. And as noted before, having a sign would be helpful. Remember to BYOB because they don't serve alcohol, but in the end that's yet another thing that makes this place an incredible bargain! We managed to eat VERY well for less than $16 per person. Just wish we'd discovered it sooner because we would've returned if we had time. Maybe for breakfast, which I hear is also fantastic.
