I did not expect my entree at Sabores y Salsas to be the best thing I ate in 2016 but it was. This was our 2nd visit to SMA. I had heard about chile en nogada but, frankly, it didn't sound that good and I thought that I had better things to eat.
On our next trip, I figured we should give it a try. Reading my favorite food writer's column in SMA (Don Day), he wrote about his favorite version at Sabores y Salsas. We waked over from the Jardin. Up, up, up many stairs since it's on top of a hill. Take the address because it's a bit tricky to find. It is in the Hotel El Mirador. Even when you reach the hotel, it's not obvious where the restaurant may be. My husband and I ascended all of the flights and found an outdoor corner table on the highest floor on a clear, warm day. It's in the shade and a perfect spot to enjoy a perfect meal.
The server took our drink orders and the chef, Maria, came over to greet us warmly. We told her we were there for the special dish and planned to share one and something else. Remember, I didn't think we'd like it...this was just a perfunctory stop to try the national dish of Mexico. The chef explained what was in her version. Well, that sounds heavenly. We'll take two please.
A massive plate was served to each of us with a stunning presentation. Each bite was absolutely perfect. Perfect ingredients, temperature and seasoning. Tim ate the whole thing. I ate far more than I do but wrapped up half for another day.
Maria came to chat a few times and we were all raves. She asked if we'd like to try dessert. "Sorry, we're so full we can't think of eating ever again."
"I made a batch of my brownies. They are still warm."
"Okay, we'll take one to go."
"Here you go."
"Thanks. How about 2 forks?"
"Best dessert I've had in 2016. Can't believe we just finished it. We'll take another to go."
