I don't even remember how I found this place. A somewhat last minute trip to Brussels had me…read moregoogling everything a few days before leaving and wound up booking Hispania for my first night there post long flight to ensure I had a good dinner. Michelin rated, and proved delicious! Booked a reservation long before leaving and had to leave a credit card number as collateral. When I arrived, I understood why. Hispania is located within a hotel and its dining space is pretty tiny. I think the dining room fits about 25-30 folks total (not including the bar). They also don't seem to seat more than 1 sitting per night, so if the table is booked for 8:30pm they won't seat folks at 6pm etc. Interior decor felt like a revved up Crate and Barrel! From the tables, chairs, to the cutlery and centerpieces, each quirky and super decorative but totally functional. (I loved it!) Staff was super kind and not pushy, we ordered food a la carte and be warned, dishes are a smidge small for the price. (but hey, this is Michelin rated tapas style so I can't exactly complain) Food was amazing! From the chef provided amuse bouche croquette, to scallops appetizer, through to entree... finger lickin' good! Drinks and desserts were equally great! I absolutely loved that their espresso martini was done exceptionally well and came paired with petit fours for dessert. Please note: this is not a 'Spanish' restaurant and they do not serve paella. A random person walked in and I overheard staff kindly tell them so.

The steak was cooked perfectly and the foie gras enhanced the flavor. Wines by the glass were excellent and well chosen. Finally we enjoyed a few truffles with the last sips of our wine. Perfection!

Paella may originate from Valencia, but this Castilian restaurant is quite possibly the best place…read moreto head to if you'd like to enjoy paella in Brussels. Situated on Schaarbeek's main square across from the town hall, the restaurant has a rustic modern feel and remains a small-scale operation with about 10 tables. Fortunately you won't find any of the unnecessary memorabilia and decorations, instead you'll probably appreciate the more somber atmosphere even if the dim lighting is at times a little troubling (I like to get a clear view of what I am eating, though when the food hits the mark my taste buds are usually a good alternative to sight). The chef, who is also the owner, combines Spanish cooking with a more traditional Belgian/European dining experience. So you get Spanish food in the more standard starter, main course and dessert format, rather than multiple dishes in the common tapas style. You'll enjoy the 3 course menu for 44 €, though a number of dishes come either as a starter or as a main, so if like me you're intent on sharing a paella (two people minimum) then you can always go for that mouthwatering main course as a starter. There are also a number of suggested starters and main courses which change regularly based on availability of products and what is in season. Last I visited we enjoyed calf's brain and beef tongue from the suggestions and were most pleased. In the past I've also had the pork trotters and lentil dishes, all of which are a really enjoyable way to start the meal. 'Sharing is caring' says my partner, so paella for mains hits the mark, both food wise and on a personal note - enjoy! Note: interestingly they are open Saturday evening's on the first and third week of the month. So weekdays may be your best bet. As mentioned, this is a small place so best you book table in advance. Service here has always been discreet yet very friendly. The best innovation last I went was the valet parking service, a godsend considering the pain it was trying to park around there without.

Great little restaurant with a nice atmosphere…read more The menu consist high end Spanish dishes and they also have the famous Spanish patanegra Jamon with a choice of 6 months, 18 months or 30 months ! The wine menu is quite large with very exquisite red wine from Spain, we took wine from the region Roble del duero which is very famous region for wine What really surprised me is that at some moment the chef said hello to all customers which show a very personal service and you really taste it when you get your food ! 100% recommend for Spanish food lovers !
