Well I searched for Mexican and found this place! I had been to a downtown location of another restaurant about a year ago and it was awful, so I was looking for someplace new. This is a DIVE for sure, but I went in. You seat yourself. Waiter was polite, not pushy. I had menu, drinks and chips w salads in no time. I love the fact that you can order Menudo during the week and that's what I had with Pata for extra $2.99. Was this the best Menudo I've ever had...? 100% come here!!!!! We love that we moved to Rapid City but the one thing we missed was good Mexican food. Yes, we ate at Mi Cualli but it wasn't what we were looking for. We wanted Mexican food on our trip to SD. The restaurant wasn't busy, and we'd heard it was good in the reviews. There were two other tables besides ours, so we had hopes for quick, delicious Mexican food. That's not what we received. The server was rude and it seemed as though she was put out for having to serve us. When we asked when our order was going to come, she said that they were working as fast as they could. It was not just us that had to wait. The other tables also were complaining about the long wait. When we got our food, it wasn't very flavorful. Maybe it's because I'm from Arizona, but I like a little pep in my food. No pep here. What was the topping on the cake was that as she was giving us the bill, she curtsied at us like we were uppity nobles and made a sarcastic apology. Too bad. Staff was not attentive at all. Long wait to get drinks, longer to order, average meal time and very long wait for bill to leave. They weren't busy and have only 8-10 tables so I guess they just don't care. Food was average at best, very large and hot chimichanga but all beans and very little beef. Enchiladas (3) had to "all be the same" so I tried beef and felt like something you'd get from Taco Bell, but plainer and drier. The highlight of our meal was the rice...super light, fluffy melt in your mouth good. Cold beer and truly hot wine not even room temp, Fair prices but can't recommend. read more

Go for the food and the authentic Mexican tastes/flavors. Don't go expecting ambiance and fancy furnishings. I was reminded of Nuevo Laredo in the 1980s and loved every minute we were there and EVERY bite of the meal. Portions are large. Prices are reasonable. (Bring cash to avoid credit card service charge). Service has always been exceptional. (Even our last stop when only one server was handling all guests with a smile) Don't get in a hurry! Food: Since we are from southern California, we were really home sick not having any Mexican food nearby. This place made us feel at home. They don't have kids burritos on the menu, but the chef made them for our kids. My wife said her chili relleno was good, but she was disappointed there was only 1, since usually when we get the plate it comes with 2. I don't remember what I ordered, but I put a picture here. It was pretty good, it had chicken and cheese... not sure what else but it was good. Rice and beans were flavorful. Service: The waiter was attentive, didn't pressure us at all. He was also nice to pick up a spill that my daughter made. We have him a good tip because we may have been a bit much as far as patrons go. Sorry dude! Price: We were looking for a taco shop, but this was the closest I think we were able to find. The place wasn't as cheap as a taco shop, but for a sit down place, it wasn't bad. 10-12$ a plate, 40-ish for a family dinner. Atmosphere: It is a little cramped inside, but it is a small place. Also, it doesn't help that there is construction out in front. It's a little dark inside as well, no individual table lighting. Overall: A great place, we will be back whenever we are back in South Dakota. It's missing something, not sure exactly what. Lots of places out in CA put a grilled green onion with the plates. ??? Good local mexican food joint. Stopped in for dinner when staying in the city for the night. It's a pretty small place, with only about 10 tables, but the food was good. Not a 'hole in the wall', but not a fine establishment either. But, the food was good and service was what to be expected. I had the fajitas, which were what you would expect. I don't know why I haven't gotten around to checking this place out sooner. I went in with my family for dinner and I have to say- this place is TINY. Not a bad thing, but it's seriously a shack. I was pleasantly surprised by the service. Our server was very attentive. The chips and salsa were well-stocked. I really appreciated that the chips weren't salty (I'm a tortilla chip connoisseur at this point). I ordered the chicken tamales and they weren't bad. I don't think I'd get it again, but it was good enough that I'd be curious to try some other dishes (carne asada or enchiladas came to mind). The star of the show was dessert--the sopapillas. Those were some the best I've ever had. Overall I have to say I will be back. If anyone in the area is looking for solid Mexican food this place is worth your time. read more

By far the best Mexican food in the state. The cheese tamales are delicious, and the sauce you can get on anything (green salsa) is the best. They have some aguas frescas available, which are always a good idea! The staff there is wonderful and this place definitely has a great family feel. Very friendly service and good chips and salsa. By far the best Mexican I've had in a while. Driving across the States (WA to IL) and on our way we decided to stop at Mount Rushmore. Being from SoCal we start jonesing when we haven't had Mexican food in a week. The search was on and I relied on the reviews here. That was a mistake. I remembered when I was stationed on Okinawa while in the Marines. The beauty scale of women Marines there went up due to their scarcity. An Okinawa 8 was a stateside 4 or 5 out of 10. So here with this restaurant. It may be a South Dakota 4 but it's a Southwest 2, at best, on the Yelp! scale. The place is small, a hole in the wall, giving hope that it would be good (a lot of holes in the wall are). About three out of the 9-10 tables were taken. The waitress was in the back and was summoned out by a Hispanic woman (good sign, the likely owner) to come out. The kitchen door opened and I saw a vieja in la cocina cooking (another good sign). Our waitress that exited the kitchen was a blonde haired, blue eyed, young 20 something. No biggie, my having seen the cook, owner, and heard both speaking Spanish...my thinking things would be good to go. Our booth had a few left over pieces of rice, but again, no biggie. The waitress got our drink order, my kids getting sodas and my being happy they had all the main, huero preferred Mexican beers. I got a Dos XX lager. It took about five to seven minutes to get the drinks, a bit long for such a small place, but nothing major. It took a long while for the chips and salsa to show up, about 10 minutes. The chips seemed warmed over, out of a bag, not fresh made...and with no salt. We salted ourselves, but absent any slight oil residue of fresh made the salt didn't stick. The salsa...very mild & bland and as watery as the shower I had this morning. No substance to it. All it did was dampen the chips. You had to find a really good curved chip to keep anything on it THEN fight not dribbling it all over the table, menu, and yourself. I got a combination plate of a lengua (tongue meat) street taco, chicken tamale, and cheese enchilada. My thing at Mexican restaurants is to always get a tamale to know how good a place is and a cheese enchilada in case it's bad because you can't screw that up. Well... The lengua taco had no flavor. Nothing really did, except my Dos XX's. The tamale was the first one I ever had to cut with a knife. The masa was fine/adequate, but the shredded chicken so dry a fork couldn't further shred through it, a new experience for me. Remember my thought that one can't screw up a cheese enchilada? I was wrong. They did. Dry and bland, the sauce on it so sparse that all of it was absorbed into the tortilla for lack of moisture. Oh, a street taco I expect to be small, but a tamale and enchilada should be longer than one's middle finger. The retried beans were boring and just a bit less watery than the salsa. The rice...strictly rice. No onions, peppers, or chiles mixed in. I think they used food coloring to make it look orange. I kinda wondered if I screwed up with my order choice as most of the menu was geared more towards mariscos (seafood). However my 20 YO son was with me and ordered fish tacos (street size). His complaints were the same as mine, mainly bland. It's actually rather surprising as in appearance everything appears authentic, but there is not flavor to be had. My son said we should've gone to the Taco Bell for better. The service was as sparse as the flavor. The waitress slow, no checking for seeing if I needed another beer or more salsa (though bad it had more flavor than the main course so I dumped a bowl of it on my entree). She was very friendly and personable when there, but seemed to be in hiding than being attentive. My final surprise was seeing three male Hispanics come in speaking Spanish, looking like they just came off the road crew or construction site (work boots, dusty jeans, matching orange long sleeve T-shirts). They were either in for a surprise or should have known better than to return. Final thing for prior reviewers, the place is cleaner than previously noted, including the bathroom, though they still haven't put a lick on the door! Bottom line, I'll likely one day return to the Black Hills area, but not this restaurant. If your an out of towner from the southwest or a Mexican immigrant avoid this place. You'll be very disappointed. Only, charitably two stars because I only had two Dos XX's. read more

I'm giving it two stars(instead of one) because I'm assuming it caters its food to local taste buds and also assuming locals don't like spicy(of any sort), flavorful, or large portions(especially for what they're charging). If given a choice between this place and a chain that shall remain nameless(but rhymes with "Shmaco Shmell"), I begrudgingly would have to choose the latter read more

After reading the previous reviews it's hard to understand how people rate restaurants like these putting them in the same category as high class restaurants, and this one shouldn't be. This establishment is under a different category and it's category it deserves a five stars from me. For one, I'am rating this based on food quality, service, and establishment. Coming from California where the Mexican food is as best as it can be, this place is superb for authentic Mexican food. If you want pretty damned good Mexican food you go here, if you want a classy "not so Mexican food" you go downtown. On our fall tour of the Black Hills, we were in the mood for some other cuisine than the American fare we had been enjoying. After reading Google reviews on this authentic mexican restaurant, we decided to give them a try. The phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" definitely pertains to this place. Located in a non-descript if not run-down building along North Street, one would probably keep driving on by, but my past experiences have told me that sometimes the best food is sometimes found in your "dives." Inside is a quaint, retro-ish seating area, simple and serves it's purpose...barely. The hostess/waitress/server was friendly and attentive. On the menu, was your typical "combination plates", but what caught my eye was that they had menudo (Sat. and Sun. only), a sign that they were authentic. Of course I had to order it along with a tamrind Jarrito (mexican soda) and a pork tamale. The menudo was good, not to spicy, and the tamale was moist and flavorfull. Chips and salsa are homemade and others in my party said their various plates of enchiladas, tacos and chorizo quesadillas were good. Overall a good experience and I reckon it was a lot better fare than the chain mexican restaurantt up the road. read more

I'm from Texas and this place is the closest you will get to authentic Mexican cuisine. I love the food here because it always reminds me of home. It's a legit mexican restaurant and the only one I will eat at in rapid city. Really great food but the servers are not very attentive. Slow service, and terrible food. This is my second and last time here. Both times have been similar. The chips and salsa lead off and leave much to be desired. The chips are cold and tough, almost stale, and the salsa is super runny. If you happen to be brave enough for a second basket, they'll cost you. (although, I can't imagine why when the food is $12 a plate) First dinner was a chorizo quesadilla, which was bland and nothing to write home about. The second lunch was a chile relleno. The breading was soggy and smeared off. The chile was cooked until it fell apart but the stuffing was cold and hard, probably frozen and fried at the last second. The rice was good, and the beans terrible with strange smoky flavor that was probably something burned to the bottom of the pot. Overall, extremely poor presentation and vastly more expensive than Mexican food should be. If you want good Mexican food, keep moving. read more

While traveling through Rapid City I Dropped in for lunch and was not disappointed. Yelp had this place listed at an address down the road but with some Google help I was able to find this place. Great little mexican joint. Not fancy, very casual, but not a hole in the wall (at least not by Mexican restaurant standards). I really enjoyed the chips and salsa. The al pastor was good, not super saucy like some tacos al pastor and comes with cilantro and onion. The cheese enchilada was unremarkable. The chicken tostada was good, I really liked the way they crisped the tortilla. The refried beans were good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the rice. Overall authentic, tasty, and a good value. I'd definitely go back if I ever make it back to Rapid City. read more
