Sabato is every food lovers' dream. Tucked away on Normanby Road in Mt Eden, if you don't know it's there Sabato can be easy to miss, and what a shame that would be! Sabato stock gourmet, rare and exotic foods - foreign oils, spices, herbs, sauces, pastas, nuts, grains, baking goods, olives, vinegars, preserves - my mouth is watering just thinking about all the goodies this store has to offer. Unlike similar stores such as Nosh, Sabato does not stock much fresh produce or meat, but their range of cheeses, preserves, hams, chorizos and confectionary make this store a great place to find wee treats and things for special occasions and/or dinner parties. Though predominantly a food store, Sabato also have a range of kitchen supplies and utensils for sale, as well as stocking cookbooks, hampers and information regarding local cooking classes. A great gluten free range is also on hand at Sabato. Bonus: Sabato also offer you free coffee and have many of their products open for taste testing while you shop - this is a definite bonus, especially because though undoubtedly delicious, quality products, Sabato is quite pricey, so it's nice to be able to try items before you buy them.

I agree with Jack C., being a foodie is as much about getting your hands dirty in the kitchen as it is about eating! I love cooking up a storm but the real magic happens when I get my hands on quality ingredients and Sabato is one of my favourite go to places! I can spend hours here. I get totally caught up in the whole shopping experience...taste testing and sipping espressos while chatting excitedly with the staff about new products and of course, spending money! My most recent discovery while shopping for my friend's wedding cake ingredients...the Can Bech preserved figs and raspberry cacao spread! So whether you are after, Spanish sardines, properly aged Italian balsamic, Valrhona chocolate, Hailala vanilla products or good quality cheeses, then Sabato is where you'll find it. Sabato hosts some great events too. They bring artisan producers in to talk about their products; host cooking demonstrations and market days. I'm dying to attend one of their Parmigiano Reggiano cracking sessions and the cheese tasting class. Oh and the staff are passionate foodies who aim to please!

A very nice market. It's small but various kinds of stuff. We like it. You can find something you nee or something you can't find in other supermarkets.

Let's just say this isn't the type of place to come if you feel like a coke and some pringles. However, if you want to go beyond the run of the mill , branch out in to the unknown, S Mart is the place to come. It's a collection of loosely grouped shops all under the banner S- Mart - so there is an alcohol store, a convenience store and a coffee shop all seperate. Within the convenience store is the food shop Madis, which I have also reviewed - it's well worth checking out as you can get custom made sushi for 5 - 7 dollars. They have benches outside where you can sit and explore the purchase you have made, deciding whether or not Mung Bean ice cream really is for you.

As I'm not Korean, I used to like to buy something that I didn't really know what it was, which was sometimes something I found yuksville, but sometimes resulted in delightful discoveries such as the Beef BBQ wheat chips (do not contain beef). My favourite things here are canned lemon and apple sodas here for the very reasonable price of $1.10 (used to be 80cents). They are pretty friendly here, and there's also a loyalty scheme you can sign up to and eventually get some credit on your purchases.

Damn your late night hours. Damn your disgusting semi warm pies that I could not stop eating. They actually have a really good range of stuff here, more than you would expect from a convenience store. Carton of fresh juice + Cookie Time = Energy for last minute exam revision. If you are ever confused about the bus stops located on the opposite side of Symonds Street, just pop in to Forte Convenience and they will point you to the right stop. Pro Tip: They are a lot more willing to drop their bus route knowledge if you buy something.

She was already visibly upset due to a major emergency with one of our friends and apologised to the (I presume owner) for breaking the bottle. He said "I'll clean it up but you have to pay for it. The bottle doesn't magically break itself", or words to that effect. I calmly pointed out that I had broken a bottle at Caltex once and they forgave it, but he doubled down. It's a fair enough rule, but he could have at least tried to be kind about it. I hope he enjoys the $2.50 because the rest of our convenience shopping will be done at one of the other stores nearby.
