In the hour and 45 minutes I was there, neither Hanshi nor his Senseis ever brought up enrolling, prices, nor contracts to sign as in other places I visited. Instead they were more interested in what I was expecting and looking for in a "Martial Art" and patiently answered my questions and then some, and each time they backed it up with a reference or demonstration and never once put down any other Martial Art Form which to me is a sign of TRUE Professionals, as well the confidence in their Art form...as Hanshi stated, " we are not for everyone, but we accept anyone who will diligently Apply themselves, which is all we ask and expect" Wow! Hanshi Byron has an air of Confidence which is Humble and exudes an aura of Calmness and Peace...he reminds me of an Iron Fist within a Velvet Glove type of person who I'd Pity the Fool who would attempt to "tread on" him or his Kyoshi's. True Warriors of Peace, Humilty and Sincerity! Not once did they ask me to enroll, only to try a class or two...when I left I realized I didn't have a schedule nor the price of classes. I returned to ask why didn't they try to enroll me as in other schools, Hanshi replied you will know for yourself if we are a match, for we prefer Quality over Quantity, as well as a long term relationship with our students/Family!

Founded by Professor Nobuyoshi Higashi, a 9th dan red belt, Higashi-san developed one of the premier judo academies in the country over the decades. Today, the academy is now overseen by Higashi-san's son, Shintaro Higashi - 6th degree red/white belt, and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The top names in judo, BJJ, and MMA consistently come through the doors to fine tune their training. However, Kokushi's doors are open and welcome to judokas of all levels and ages. Shintaro runs a rigorous program amidst a relaxed, safety-first atmosphere where ego's and "tough guy" attitudes are checked away well before they reach the mats. A unique trait that Shintaro has is his awareness and ability to train with his students at precisely the level they need to be pushed. Similarly, Kokushi boasts a burgeoning children's program. Shintaro has a natural instinct with kids, and they flourish under his tutelage. Whether you are a seasoned veteran in martial arts, a complete beginner, looking for a reputable judo program for your child, or anything in between, Kokushi Budo Institute is an absolute must-try for anyone interested.

The benefit of this change is that Tito is more free to impart his knowledge of best practices applicable for the streets and subways of NYC without being fettered by organizational bureaucracy from half a world away.
