You would have to get off at "Rotenboden" stop when you take the Gornergrat Bahn (The Matterhorn Railway). Personally, it seemed to be a difficult and scary to walk all the way down to the lake. There was some snow and wet dirt during the time I was there in October 2016. My cousin went all the way down and he said it was an OK walk. Must see spot to photograph Matterhorn mountain while in Zermatt!
