BEWARE!! ASK AND CHECK YOUR COVERAGE FIRST! The cleaning and exam was great, don't get me wrong... But the front office staff could do much better. I've been going to this dental office for years. Dr. Chiu took over the existing dental practice. It was my first visit there and was not informed that Dr. Chiu was an "out of network" dentist. My visit included an exam, cleaning and x-rays. I was so surprised when they asked to pay $505 at the end of my visit. These services are usually fully covered by Delta Dental. When I asked about the amount, the front office staff then said that they were "out of network" and I needed to pay for today's visit now. They can submit the claim with Delta and Delta will reimburse a portion of the bill to me in a couple of weeks. The reimbursement check was only for $214. I am responsible for $291! In the past, my visits were fully covered! I feel so frustrated. If I had known, I would have gone somewhere else! Time to search for a new dentist! read more

I recently came back for my half year check up and this time I was a little more worried than usual. One of my teeth was being more sensitive than usual and I noticed some black spots on my other teeth. My dental hygienist was extremely nice and careful around my sensitive tooth, making sure to tell me that if I felt any pain to let her know. I also had to do a full mouth x-ray and in my memory as a child, x rays are one of the most painful things you can do at a dentist. Perhaps with my grown-up mouth and grown-up pain resistance, the x ray did not feel that bad at all. After the clean up, I talked with Dr. Chiu who provided me an action plan around my sensitive teeth and told me to update him on my teeth. I was referred to Dr. Chiu by my former dentist who sold his practice and retired. I've hated going to dentists all my life, rarely having a good experience. I worried about finding a new one because I was so comfortable with mine. The referral was given to me a while ago, but I was very hesitant to call. I finally made the call and was able to schedule an appointment before the COVID shutdown. I had nothing to fear, both Drs. Chiu and his son, Ryan are amazing. They are professional, approachable, welcoming and made me feel very comfortable as a new patient. They explained everything so thoroughly and asked if I had any questions and reviewed my dental care strategies--what to be aware of and preventative measures. Having been treated by both, they really do go the extra mile for patient care. Even their dental hygienist was extremely thorough and made sure I was comfortable during my teeth cleaning. Post COVID reopening, they do take patient precautions, prior to each visit you must complete a COVID questionnaire, a mask must be worn, and your temperature is taken before entering. They request that you don't wait in the patient waiting room and the chairs have been removed--although there is seating available for patients in need. Once in the office, your personally belongings are bagged, and you have to wash your hands. I appreciate all the care they go into doctor/patient safety. Dentists are scary! Teeth cleaning is such a drag, your gums bleed and swell up when they poke you with those scary too. Well not here! I have been going here since I was a kid and never have I had an awful experience. Dr Chiu is pro natural teeth. He will not recommend a procedure unless it is necessary. I have some "cavities" and we have been monitoring it for years. By cavities, I do not mean holes, I mean areas in my teeth that have lost some mineral (only visible via X-ray) but not enough to form any micro holes. With careful (and his new recommended flossing) I have been able to maintain and stop the cavity from going worse. Don't let their higher than normal pricing scare you! It seriously is 1000000% worth it. They're packed all the time so get ready to only be able to come at weird hours. Seriously tho, Dr Chiu and his staff are really the best. I don't usually write Yelp reviews but Dr.Chiu and his team deserve all the praise they can get! The entire team is friendly, personable, and caring. And the cherry on top is that Dr.Chiu is exceptionally skilled. Like most people, I get some anxiety about going to a dentist. I've had my fair share of dental treatments since I was a kid and have encountered dentists who teeth shame and always suggest the most aggressive and expensive form of treatment for you. Needless to say, I was worried about hearing those things again BUT boy was I wrong. Dr.Chiu is so informative and thorough with his exams that he's spotted areas that were not flagged by my previous providers. He carefully looked through my x-rays, examined my teeth, and let me know about the problemed areas he saw. Pointing them out on the x-ray screen to show me as we went through each area. He also ran an ice test to check on the nerve. (I've never had that done before! -- Normally a dentist would just look at my tooth and suggest an RCT; but he ran tests to see if I absolutely needed it.) I think I've finally found the dentist I can put all my trust in. He created a comprehensive treatment plan that would benefit me the most, and explained to me the urgency of each problem he saw. Whether it needs treatment urgently or if it's something we need to treat down the line so that my teeth won't have to get to the point of no return; root canals or extractions. If you aren't informed about your own dental health, you wouldn't know to do better moving forward. Dr.Chiu really put me at ease, explained everything, and answered all of my questions. I mean ALL of them. He has so many patients waiting to see him yet I never once felt rushed. He is patient-focused and an expert in his field. I couldn't be more happy with Dr.Chiu and his staff. I can't believe I'm saying this, I had the best dental experience of my life. I love love love Dr.Chiu. I had just gone through a bad experience with my last dentist and Dr. Chiu did everything that my other doctor had failed to do: explain what he was thinking and what the problem was exactly, approach the problem conservatively, and frequently followed up to make sure things were getting better (which they were). I would recommend him to friends and family. I think he cares about his patients and doesn't suggest any unnecessary procedures, especially extremely expensive ones or ones that damage the teeth considerably. At 42, my husband goes to him, my stepson and every other member of my extended family. he will not do any unnecessary dental work and will work with you financially. On July 2013, my implant doctor referred me to Dr. Chiu to make the implant crown. When I called Dr. Chu's office to makethe appointment, they want me to see in the next two days and I confirmed with my implant doctor that he wants to see me first. He needs to open the implant and wait four weeks later then I can see Dr. Chu to make the crown. I know that the waiting period is 4 weeks or so. Therefore, I called Dr. Chu's office right away to make the appointment. They gave me an appointment to him in 3 weeks, which will be in September. The problem is my insurance will end in September or so. I asked the receiptist at Dr. Chiu to give me the appointment sooner. She said to me that if I want it to be done, the crown has to be finished by October, or I will need to find another Dentist. She said it to me three times and I was very disappointed, which made me want to cry. I told her that my implant doctor wants me to come here but I rather go somewhere else. She asked me to hold the line and Dr. Chu picked up the phone and said that I am not welcome in his office. He said he does not have any space for me to join in. He charged $2,800.00 for the implant post & crown, which is ridiculous and I could not sleep for a couples nights now as I didn't really know what to do. Dr. Chiu is a true professional. I've used him for about 3 years, so I have a basis of comparison with other dentists both in the Bay Area and in other parts of the country. I originally wanted a second opinion from him, and he provided it with no reservation, without maligning the other dentist, who I decided independently was price gouging. Quite recently, I had a major trauma to my front teeth after a fall in East Bay. I was not released until 5:30 pm from thathospital, but Dr. Chiu waited for me at his office in San Francisco until 7 pm and then treated me for another hour. He even called the next day on Saturday to see how I was doing! There are not many dentists who show such care for their patients. He is a gem! read more

I've been going to Chiu for years because he was my family dentist, and both of my parents go to him. For my experience it seems that the quality has gone down, the dental hygienist don't seem like they're doing that well of a cleaning. The last great visit I had was when there was a new Caucasian dentist in training that had just finished dental school, but she left since, I guess she opened her own practice. Last time I went they didn't use any power instruments to clean my teeth, all manual instruments. My sonicare works just the same. They only take appointments, and you'll have to make them 6 months in advance because they are booked. Bad thing is if you're sick, and have to call to cancel, but he charges you $50 to cancel, unless you give 48hours notice. Come on, 48hours notice?! So if you get admitted to the ER it's still my fault, lame. 24 hours is one thing but 48, never again. After getting a job with my own dental plan, I left this place. read more
