That is not at all the case. There are loud conversations by staff and visitors and no one cares to enforce the quiet rules. I even reserved a study room and there were still loud conversations I could hear through my headphones. There are also people that just come in to wait for the bus, loitering, and have this as their meeting place for many things. They sit at the tables and talk with no intention of using the library for its actual use. Even though it is a public place there needs to be better security of noise levels and using the library for its intended use. Maybe enforce group study rooms, silent rooms, private rooms, etc. Staff is very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I just wish it were a quieter, peaceful environment. Great place to come in, grab a book, and leave.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE…read more 8 Stars. (Absolutely unrelated to the fact that the library houses my graduate thesis.) Baker Berry Library is the perfect union of old & new. Old: Baker Library New: Berry Library (Added on later.) Highlights -- * Baker Tower: Centrally located on Dartmouth College's campus, the tower offers the best views of Hanover, New Hampshire. * Borrow Direct: Access to the library collections at Brown, Columbia, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton & Yale. (Why isn't Harvard included?) * Current Periodicals Room: Over 1,000 current issues of science, social science, humanities, & general interest journals. * Evans Map Room: No excuses for bare walls!! * Jones Media Center: My source of entertainment between partying... I mean, studying. Boasts over 5,000 videotapes and 1,000 DVDs. * Book Arts Workshop: The outlet for my creative juices between partying... I mean, studying. * The Tower Room: Dim lights, dark wood & leather seats - Study in classic New England elegance. (Between partying.) * Novak Cafe: Where to grab a quick bite. (On my way to partying.) I want to give Baker Berry 10 stars, but the blitz terminals aren't sanitized frequently enough (at all??) & operating hours should extend to midnight at least. How many times did I try to return my Animal House & Sports Night DVDs en route to frat row, only to be denied?! ...I mean, where am I supposed to study at 11:30 on a Friday night?? Maybe I need a copy of Heidegger's Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics & maybe I need it at a half past 11!

My friend goes to Dartmouth and gave me a tour of this main building on Campus. I was not expecting the building to be very different inside. There are multiple study area: a traditional dark oak room with chandeliers, a more modern and open study area with lots of light, and a basement area with a large mural. They also have a side room that's in memory of Dr. Seuss, who was an alumni at Dartmouth.

So far I've gone to 2 events here: a monthly movie night with an independent film and a poetry…read moreslam. The movie night was with free popcorn and film on the life of James Baldwin which I was dying to see, so I couldn't have been happier. After the movie we discussed race relations in the US which was a very fascinating dialogue. However, the age group for this event was more mature but they still had a good crowd regardless. The next event was a poetry slam with prizes. They even had free pizza! I didn't partake but it was a nice touch. The age range of participants was 15 to 83! Wow! That's really impressive. So much goes on here and I'm so glad to be part of it.

If you are looking for a quiet place to read, do work, or use the computer, I suggest looking…read moresomeplace else. Every time I have come in here I have found it to be extremely loud. The people who work here speak at full volume and chat, chat away. It's not uncommon for people to have entire conversations across a ten-foot span, from a computer to the help desk. Some of them have booming voices. In fact, I have come in here today for two reasons: 1. to look up the address of the public library in Montpelier, and 2. to leave a review about how difficult it is to concentrate in here. When the school day lets out, you'll also find that a lot of teenagers are stomping up and down the stairs, yelling, talking loudly, etc. The third floor is supposed to be a quiet area? but I have never found that to be the case. Right now, in fact, there is a singing group of some sort meeting downstairs. Never mind, I just overhead the front desk talking to a patron! It's not a group meeting, it is a concert! I am happy that this community has a public space where groups can meet, where people can get together and talk, a social space. However, I am very, very angry that as a person who needs quiet to work and be able to concentrate, I am unable to use THE LIBRARY. If I had the money, I would fix my computer and cell phone and not fuss any further about it. But I don't. As a person with limited income who struggles as a quiet person in a very loud world, I am disheartened that there is not a space for quiet in the library. Don't expect the people who work here to maintain a quiet atmosphere, either. They're part of the problem.

Today's "office" was the Brattleboro library. Easy, clean, comfortable…read more I found a nice spot on the upper floor where I was undisturbed for five hours of emails, quiet Zoom meetings and perhaps a few Yelp reviews got cranked out in between here and there. The library is quite modern on the inside despite being in an older and refined building. A large collection of books including the usual fiction, non-fiction, reference and periodicals. Friendly and helpful staff who helped me get settled. And a free wifi that worked very well. Street parking with meters and you're expected to find a different space after two hours. Okay, I did that. [Review 18442 overall - 42 in Vermont - 1964 of 2022.]

Thanks Jerry. My experience there was really unfortunate. I recieved a threatening notice that…read moreVermont law allowed for a fine of up to $400. for a book that was not returned. There was no further explanation offered, no further elaboration, or justification for that amount. That is the basis of my Yelp. The day I got the notice, I was, ironically, driving to Boston to return books to both the Boston Public Library, and a university library. When I returned to Brattleboro and saw the notice, I came in inquire about the threatening tone of the note. I was assured by reference librarian the that they only sent that after an initial notice had been ignored, and that fine amount was encoded in Vermont law. I had not recieved any prior notice and I asked if there was a record that the first notice was indeed sent to me. The reference librarian then took me back to the office behind the main desk. A woman there looked up my account and told both of us that there had, in fact, been no prior notice sent. There had indeed been an error. I love the charm of the library, but I woud not assume people are out to harm it or inflict financial strain on it. I am curious to know how anyone (particularly a legislator) thought $400 was a good idea, or why it would be used as an incentive to get a book back? That's where I think $25 would do the trick. It seems like overkill and unecessarily threatening.
