The New Brunswick campus is the largest Rutgers campus, and I stopped in to visit the business school, with updated modern classrooms, trading room, study and presentation spaces, and a wonderful stairwell entry for photos. If you look closely at the ten highest paid public servants in New Jersey, you'd see the Governor, two or three train conductors from NJ Transit who have mastered the art of overtime and a random assortment of current and former head football coaches from Rutgers University's not so recent past. In 2014 we were told that Rutgers had to join the Big 10 Athletic Conference to bring our state funded University to national prominence and generate hundreds of millions in incremental revenue that would fund not only athletics but their various academic missions as well. "Win/Win" went the PR-driven pornography. Not so fast. A state audit has revealed that since Rutgers joined the Big 10 in 2014, the athletic department has hemorrhaged more than a half billion dollars. As an out of state student, it was the best 2 year I had in my life. Way better than undergraduate at San Francisco State University. I learned a lot of skills that applies to real life, from employment laws class to financial decision. Before I can to Rutgers, I did not know a lick of excel. At Rutgers though, professor taught me how to apply equation and statistic, an essential skill for the outside world. And in terms of job opportunity, New Jersey is just a 1-hour train ride to New York. The 4 campus of New Brunswick can be annoying though. They are so far away from each other that if you don't have a car, lets just say that the school bus is really bad. So get ready to prepare for like an hour early just in case somethings goes wrong with the bus. Livingston campus is business and HR, busch campus is STEM, cook douglas campus is kinesiology- gender major, and finally, college ave campus is mostly for undergrads, where all the nightlife happens. I am a professional engineer, and I was an instructor at NJIT teaching graduate and undergraduate classes. Rutgers is a scam. They steer you into majors and career options that are completely worthless, just to get your tuition money. I graduated from Rutgers in 1983 with a BS degree in ceramic engineering. My Rutgers' degree was and still is completely and utterly worthless. I spent the majority of my career managing major construction projects for electrical utilities, and university teaching, because the job market for ceramic engineers does not exist in the US. The entire ceramic engineering department, and now material science department, it's just made up gibberish, spouting all kinds of ridiculous lies about the wonderful career you're going to get in industries that don't exist. I graduated summa cum laude (3.9, finance) from this place in May 2023. I was supposed to graduate in 2021 but changed my major from accounting to finance midway and took a few semesters off. Most professors I've had at RBS were nice and fair. Some RBS students were snobs but I guess that's just a business school Wall Street type mentality *shrug*. I always have a good time when I go to games at Rutgers University. Attended the volleyball game at the commercial Avenue gym and had a blast. The game was fun and full of excitement. The band played up to date music and build the room with joy. The commentator Is hilarious and I love to hear him speak on the game. Well, since this address is on the College Avenue Campus, I'll focus the review on this area only. This is a very lively part of Rutgers. Numerous shops, bars, and eateries (including Thomas's Ice Cream Shop - reviewed separately) are situated in this general area. You can even find some food trucks here too. This is also where the Barnes and Noble Store (reviewed separately) is located. The New Brunswick Train Station is close by too. Various housing facilities are available here too. Most of the buildings on this campus looked good (either historical or modern). The buildings contained either housing units or classrooms. There was always a lot of activity going on here, which was great. The College Ave. Student Center is a place where students can relax, hang out, or even study. Just like the other student centers, they have various offices, and rooms for events and more. They do have a Spirit shop for snacks, Rutgers clothing and academic essentials. Food-wise, they do have a Wendy's, Subway, Au Bon Pain, a pizza cafe, a place where burritos are made, and a restaurant where gyros are served. Usually, my friend and I would chill there, but we had no time during our most recent experience. During our recent experiences, I assisted my friend in locating his classes on this nice campus. At least now he knows where to go! We did notice that they were constructing some new buildings. We wondered whether or not classes would be held there. But that makes no difference to us since he's graduating by January, and I already graduated. After the locating, we simply hung out at Thomas's. I take away one star because of the parking. The credit card meters charge $1.50 per hour. Really?! This isn't a beach town, so why charge students, alumni, and everybody else so much? Well, it is what it is. We didn't have time to snap some photos of this campus since we were pretty occupied with class locating and ice cream. Overall, I'm a fan of this campus. I love my alma mater...though it has gone through some tremendous changes over the past decade: new buildings, completely rerouting the River Road/Rt. 18 area, consolidating the colleges into a single administrative/academic institution...it is enough to drive a student or an alum a bit crazy. However, through all of the upheaval I've never forgotten about the great times I had as a student. I worked in Higher Ed. for over 11 years before changing careers and the one thing that always annoyed me was hearing students complain about their college. You know what, college is what you make of it...you don't want to get involved, you don't like your classes or your professors, you aren't making friends, you're getting cappy grades...it isn't the college's fault, it's yours. I took advantage of a minuscule amount of opportunities at Rutgers (compared to what was offered) and it was the three of the best years of my life (I transferred in after getting a year done while in the service). There is so much history, so much to do, you have so many options for a major, and there are TONS of activities and student orgs to join. I honestly never wanted to go to Rutgers since I grew up in Piscataway, but I'm so glad I chose to attend rather than my other options. Having grown up around the fun of Rutgers Football (and now Field Hockey), both my kids now want to go there...and to be honest, you can get every bit as good an education at Rutgers as any Ivy League school...IF you are willing to put in the effort. Will I actually SEND them to Rutgers? Let me just say that it's now August 4, 2016 and it's been exactly 81 days, or 2 months and 20 days since I had the pleasure of graduating from this University ( and being able to witness the ever so graceful President of the United States speak) and let me confess, I miss it already. What a crazy yet marvelous journey it's been at this University. I mean from the free football games to the many activities and clubs that were made available to the student body. It's honor to be able to call this University my alma mater. Rutgers is home to many great things. Personally, when I would tell someone I go to Rutgers at least one of these things were brought up.( and not in any particular order) grease trucks, great academics, the party scene, football, college ave, brother jimmy's, stuff yer face, and of course I can't forget the crowded buses on the regular. I'm really going to miss this place. From the Silvers apartments on Busch, to the Easton Avenue Apartments on College Ave to the final upgrade of the Livingston Apartments. It's really been the greatest of times here. I would also like to say that during my time at Rutgers there were many academic services made available. There is so much that Rutgers University offers and if you're lucky enough to get accepted here please utilize everything from the free football games to the pigs on cook to everything in between. I was a Rutgers commuter for 4 years. It had it's downsides - poor parking lot locations, unreliable / inconvenient buses, old occasionally smelly classrooms, registering for classes on their slow website, weird pre-reqs...the list goes on. But you know what? This happens at every school. Every school has problems, something that's inconvenient, or something that just SUCKS. So I got over it. Most of the professors are top notch. They take AP credits 99% of the time. They give good scholarships. Really active on campus community. Good location for commuters (well...mostly!) near mass transit. Dining and entertainment options around campus. An expertly directed, well funded, and desperately under-appreciated study abroad department (you heard it here, Rutgers has one of the best study abroad departments in the country). If you want to party your brains out you can do that too, but the academics are definitely there as well. Good departments: Italian, English, History, Computer Science, Food/Animal/Agricultural science, Nursing, Pharmacy. Potentially bad departments: Math. TL;DR - has it's downsides, but it's cheap and has strong academics in a good location. read more

Rutgers University's communication and overall handling of school shut down and virtual learning due to Covid-19 was truly disappointing. Lack of leadership and organization was clear with classes held remotely with many professors cancelling class for one reason or another or having difficulties conducting online class effectively. Fall of 2020 vs Spring of 2021, communication held by the dean/ head of student organization was disheartening. After a year long shut down and no plans to return graduating seniors for on campus ceremony and convocation which contradicts vaccine distribution in the States. The school did provide some grants and financial relief for students in need but the school received so much aid from the government and for school year to end with virtual ceremony is lack of imagination, leadership and consideration for those graduating in 2021. read more

Rutgers is basically a bloated institution that cares more about the professors/deans than the students. I went from a student on the deans list to a drop out in 3 1/2 years. But if you like the idea of spending countless hours on several buses day and night, then Rutgers might be the school for you. firstly just the way they presented the school to me was shady. They put me in the diversity campus but yet during orientation every student was white. When I started at Rutgers it was a lot more mixed than that. I am no racist but there was a lot of division in this particular campus with few social outlets and the genders were unbalanced as well, being mostly men, I might as well have been serving in the army. It was like Rutgers was accepting me but putting me in the shittiest campus imaginable and trying to paint it to be something that it is not. Firstly, I had a 504 going into Rutgers which meant I had an emotional disability ( now I know it was autism but I did not know this at the time ) but when I had a nervous breakdown and had to leave one week into my 2nd semester 3rd year , I was still charged for the classes I missed and my transcripts were blemished. The guidance counselors basically shove a piece of paper in my face asking why I was dropping out and who wants to admit they are in the middle of a nervous breakdown. They are all about the bottom line at RU. The professors were a joke here, often foreign with an accent and no ability to teach, often speaking in monotone robot voice. I got my first failure in the school of business Statistics part 2 class. I had a professor that spoke about everything other than statistics and of coarse the entire class bombed the first exam, as it was nothing like the book we were given to study. Well they all aced the 2nd and third exam while I failed those. The students there were in the fraternity had the previous exams and basically just studied those while me not being in a fraternity was basically served a shit sandwich, my only Failure in all my years as a student up to this point. At Rutgers you get in line and fall in place otherwise your out of luck. Also when I was having issues and begging guidance for help I was basically slammed against a brick wall which was the deans office at livingston at the time. I was basically told that Rutgers did not want a graduate that couldn't do the things I was claiming I could not do in the real world, which was giving a presentation. I finally had to admit defeat but it cost me 4 years of my life that I will never get back. read more

Where do I even begin... I went to high school in Highland Park so prior to actually attending this place, I always thought the rumors I heard about place are BS. In the summer I got admitted, the infamous RU screw just started rolling down the hill. I was placed into an ESL class despite the fact that I had an above average SAT verbal score and having passed what they would call a "placement" exam. In the beginning, I really thought the fault is on my end but I kid you not that I found a couple of serious grammatical mistakes on their "textbooks" for writing classes and the instructors just decided to shrug off. Now going back to their obsession with "perfect" grammar, I was a physics major so I had to take many classes in Busch that were taught by my comrades from the East. I had hard time understanding what those foreign faculty members were trying to say in their version of English. How can you require students to be perfect when you have faculty members that simply don't speak English? As for the writing instructors, most of them are hypocrites and have no decent job other than to "teach" English. I took a class called Scientific and Technical writing but the teacher said he couldn't give a rat's ass about science. In conclusion, this is a university that epitomizes the failure of public education and contradicts everything about American values. Please do not cling onto the past glories of the old days, if there had been any, by associating yourselves with the word ivy in "Public Ivy". I will always consider Columbia University to be my true alma mater and Rutger to be the biggest mistake I can make in my life. read more

The farm is open on Cook campus so you can pet the pigs and the horses. It is a day full of fun activities and good food vendors. I am a undergraduate senior at Rutgers right now, and I must say, New Jersey residents don't give this university enough credit. Rutgers is a well respected school, both nationally and internationally. Yes, it's a state school. It's not as selective as an Ivy League, but that doesn't mean the academics and research suffer as a result. Programs such as Computer Science, Pharmacy, Engineering, Business and Philosophy are highly ranked compared to other schools. For the price you're paying, it's well worth it. If you're worried about getting a job in this tough economy, I can say that a good 85% of my friends have jobs. The other 15% either applied for graduate school, staying an extra semester to complete another major/minor or just plain didn't apply to any positions. Rutgers is under new management now, and is undergoing some major changes in the next couple of years. I am on the strategic planning committee to help drive some of the changes, and I can safely say that the experience here is only going to get better. New dorms, facilities and shops are being built on campus to enhance both the academic and social experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors. read more

I went to Rutgers for a year and then moved to California. It was my freshman year and I did horribly that year because I was too consumed with partying. I loved every minute of it and don't regret the bad grades! I lived in the quads on Livingston. Very spacious rooms with the best roommate ever. Plus, you can park your car on campus as a freshman if you attended Livingston. I lived for cheeseburger day at Tillet Dining Hall with the fries that you can slather Velveeta cheese on. I remember having the time of my life at frat parties (I know, I know) and gorging at the Grease Trucks before the last LX bus ran and you had to call the "drunk bus". Note to new students, the drunk bus never comes and never picks up when you call them. haha. Lies! Actually, I did catch on really late night bus and it was the best bus ride ever. Everyone was wasted and we were all trying to "bus surf" in the aisles. Man, I could go on and on about all the fun I had and not so much about the academics, because I barely went to class. However, I did learn that big lecture halls weren't for me. If you want to party, go to Rutgers and live in the dorms. Oh, man RUTGERS!!!! It's been a year since I graduated and I miss it so much. As I'm sitting in my cubicle, I feel so nostalgic just remembering my undergrad years. Now I know why people say that your college years are the best years of your life. To those students who are deciding to whether or not attend RU. Here are the reasons why I love RU and why you will too: 1. Yes it's a huge school - (number one reason why people say they don't want to go here) BUT seriously once you attend, you realize it doesn't feel like you're lost in an abyss. You seriously have best of both worlds. You will have the small community (it naturally happens) since you'll start knowing everyone in your campus/major/roommates AND you'll have the big school feel by taking classes on other campuses or going out . You have a bus system which takes you all over with multiple bus stops in each campus. I lived on Busch all my time at RU since all my classes/part time job were there but then I also went to College Ave a lot to go out. I love that I could have the college party experience on weekends but then go back to somewhere a bit more chill to study. 2. So much diversity! I've met so many people of so many different backgrounds whether it be their personality/ethnicity/perspectives - which means there's a place for everyone! So many organizations/clubs because of this reason. 3. Academics + Departments - I was an electrical and comp. engineering major so I can tell you that the engineering department is great - all the Deans are so welcoming and helpful. Note that this is a Research University so professors have not only teaching as their prime concern but their research as well so expect to teach yourself. The Professors/TAs also hold office hours + there are tutoring centers in all campuses for you. I also took some women & gender studies/political science classes and it was a good change. I love the fact that I had options each semester. 4. Housing is awesome - I lived on campus all of my undergrad years and I loved it. Yeah some dorms are crappy - but to be honest none of that matters. The fact that you have everyone around your age living around you is the best part. 5. Job hunting - career fairs are your best friend. Many companies come to RU to hire interns/full time so it can be very easy to get a job. 6. Gym/rec classes - if you get the flex pass you can go to different classes like kick boxing, zumba, etc. + you have the standard gyms. Tips to the prospective student: GO OUT - meet people from the dorms + halls/bus/classes. Just talk to everyone, you'll be surprised how many people just want to talk to you. Also don't get excited at the dining hall and eat too much (this is highly inevitable so Idk why I would even try to persuade you) because you'll get fat - trust me! Freshman 15?? Yes definitely happens. If you're an engineering major - go to OSD (Office of Student Development)! It will be your family away from home. Have fun! Study and go out on weekends! Enjoy this time at RU because the real world is not like that - it'll probably be the only years of your life that you can live with everyone your age, make your own schedule, and have so much freedom. Want to go to Princeton but can't afford it, grades aren't good enough, and/or hate an Ivy League's refinement and associated job prospects? Then go to RRRRUUUUTTTTGGGGEEERRRRSSSS!!!!! RU! RU! Eh-oooooo!!!!! Alright so a quick history lesson, there were nine chartered colleges in American prior to the Revolution, seven became Ivy Leagues, one is William and Mary, and last (and probably least) is Rutgers. What do you expect from a school that started in the upstairs of a pub? Still for the money, I argue it is a bargain. The academics are as good as any of the above mentioned schools, but at a public school price. The New Brunswick environment, on the other hand, did not appeal to my high-minded tastes. Would I send my kids here? Maybe, but I vow to be a helicopter parent and beat.....err..force my kids to excel academically and have no fewer than 62 extracurricular activities each, and that's just in high school so they could go somewhere better. read more

Most people go to one college so they can't really "compare" universities appropriately, so I'll just share my Rutgers experience. I loved my 2.5 years at Rutgers. Loved them. But that's probably because of the great people I met. Coming from a very white neighborhood, Rutgers was my first exposure to a gigantic population of Asians. I believe the school is 25% Asian. It was different, new, and exciting to see that. Culturally, it's a really diverse school and I like that. I had friends that went to schools down south that are 90%+ white, which is fine, but I think cultural exposure is a big part of growing as an adult. Now that I think about it, trying to review a university in a little blurb is pretty impossible. So I'll just say, New Brunswick is a fantastic area with tons of restaurants and things to do. The NJ Transit station is easily accessible and then you're a 1 hour ride away from NYC. With Rutgers being here, everything that you could need is right at your fingertips. Downside is the campuses are really spread out so you may need to take a bus. Traffic can sometimes crawl to a halt on 18 because of ongoing construction, and the buses can get super crowded. Late night they don't run very often so getting around can suck in that regard too. Make friends with people with cars. I loved Rutgers and pretty much everyone I know is still very attached to the school. Just don't expect me to be one of those old dudes marching in an alumni parade 50 years from now. Having been a 17 year New Jersey resident (now a PA one), Rutgers has a special place in my heart. The university itself is not out-of-this-world amazing - but don't take that to mean that it is bad by any means. Many friends of mine have attended (or transferred) to this place, and some of the programs are really great. The PharmD (6 Year) is very exclusive, as are some of the Engineering ones. Most programs within the regular college are not too difficult to get into, and tuition for in-state residents is heavily subsidized. The campuses are beautiful, and the residence halls aren't bad either. Obviously, recent incidents of national proportions (**cough**webcams**cough**) have moved Rutgers into somewhat of a limelight, but as is rather obvious, don't let one incident mar the reputation of a classic institution such as Rutgers. read more

College is the best time of most people's lives. Everyone is young, happy, beautiful, irresponsible. Sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll is all around you; parents and teachers aren't. Life is full of possibility. No one really expects anything of you -- no one that is anywhere near you, at least. I was walking around Rutgers earlier today, actually. I was struggling with my life of responsibility and adulthood in a big way, and... maybe it was fate, but there I was, walking around Rutgers on the second day of Fall classes. I escaped prison and found myself in paradise. It was bright. Really bright, sunny, a little disorienting. But I saw what I saw, and now I'm all nostalgic. Seven years ago, I was a Freshman at Rutgers. I didn't see it as the paradise it really was, quite yet. Actually, I felt anxious everywhere I went. I had freedom, but no clue what to do with all of it. If only I could go back in time, relive it all again... I would do so much differently. I might even be cool, the second time around. Is college worth the money? Depends. Do you like cheap, greasy food, hot girls, and learning about whatever you feel like learning about? I could be wrong, but maybe paying off your college loans for the rest of your life is actually worth it in the long run. read more

Rutgers Oh Rutgers!!! What can I say about this place? It was home, a haven from... well.... life. And a source of serious financial debt that still haunts me years after I have left its low cobblestone walls and academic halls for that battle with life that we all initially dread. I escaped my frolicking days without a sexually transmitted disease, but I'm still carrying a scholastically transacted debt. School is a debt that is "worth it" though. Something I tell my own students. I went for the undergraduate and graduate experience thanks to loans. Stayed on campus the first two years at Livingston Campus. The "Black" campus. Worked in the library there, and as campus security there, and I also volunteered for the concert organization. All of which provided some cherished memories. I was also part of the student government, and even attempted to start my own paper. I remember stealing trays to go sledding, having my own corner room in the Towers, meeting bands [Living Color, Rage Against The Machine, Cyprus Hill] and lunch dates in the cafeteria. Spent the summers there as well: volleyball on College Avenue, working at the College Avenue dining hall. And then it was Guilden Street. Sharing a house with six other guys like a mini fraternity complete with a finished bar and pool room in the basement. Finished up my undergraduate there. Noise violation tickets, hopping from house to house, and booze. From there it was a plethora of domiciles. Finished graduate school and off to NYC to battle the Beast. Academics at Rutgers is mixed bag. They let some really good writers go. They could beef up the ethnic and cultural studies. But I've had some interesting experiences on the undergrad level. Rutgers University is the best college on the east coast (in my completely biased and nostalga-focused opinion). All bias aside, it's definitely not a perfect school for plenty of reasons that I don't feel like listing. But it's still amazing. There was so much diversity and so many students that each semester I always met new people and learned about new cultures. By the time I graduated, I had such an eclectic group of friends. I loved it! Yes, the classes were huge (I almost never had a class less than 150 students) but I liked that. Accountability was put on the students to learn. If anyone needed extra assistance with the coursework, professors were always available after lectures. There are a lot of campuses and each one had its own vibe, which was also a plus. I wouldn't change anything from my college experience and I recommend Rutgers to anyone applying to colleges! read more

Definitely my favorite campus at Rutgers. This campus is very tiny compared to the others but it has life. There is always something going on this campus: fundraisers, events, walks, and many more. Many restaurants and bars are located a block or two down from college avenue. Due to this, there is a huge night life on this campus. This campus is also right next to the train station and a bus stop. You can use this to get to New York or Trenton. Whatever suits your fancy. I would say the only con would be that there is construction going on and it can get a bit inconvenient. Some sidewalks are blocked currently and sometimes bus routes are changed. Even with all these issues, I still love this campus. read more

Two words- Greece Trucks. on the corner of College Ave and Hamilton St lies the infamous Greece Trucks, home of the original Fat Cat. If you're unfamiliar with the 'fat cat' cuisine, the basics consist of the following: either beef patties, chicken fingers or falafel, + french fries, mozzerella sticks or bacon w/ lettuce, onions, and tomatoes...ALL ON ONE GIANT ROLL. now, the contents of each fat cat varies resulting in specific names for each one. there's the Fat Elvis, Fat Buddha, Fat Coco, Fat Daryl, Fat Bitch, Fat Marvin, and i'm sure the list has expanded since my days of university. my favorite is the 'breakfast' one, the Fat Moon: bacon, ham, eggs, french fries w/ lettuce, onions and tomatoes. oh, and don't be offended when the vender asks if you would like some 'pussy juice' on your fat sandwich, they're just trying to connect with the college crowd. read more

Thank you thank you for getting my little brother out of the house. OK, that was a joke (mostly) but I am pretty glad he goes here, otherwise I doubt I would have discovered some of the cool things in New Brunswick. From the art museum to some seriously good eats, not counting the grease trucks because I have yet to sample that (I'm not sure my post-collegiate stomach can handle that!) In any case, I'll be back I'm sure, he's got 3 more good years in him there and that means more New Brunswick time! read more

I mean where else in Jersey can you get Sandwich's that pack everything in it (egg - steak - fries - mozzarellas - lettuce - tomatoes etc etc) if you are drunk and driving around for food, this place is a must. read more
