That's when they told me they don't give pennies back anymore because the penny has been retired. Part of me wanted to say something in the moment, but I decided it wasn't worth my energy, so I just took the receipt and left. But here's what actually stayed with me: the claim that the penny is "retired" is not a neutral fact about the world, it's a policy decision dressed up as an inevitability. I had two pennies sitting in my own wallet at that exact moment. The coin is not out of circulation. What's happened is that this business has unilaterally decided it will no longer circulate that value back to me, while still using it to calculate what I owe. The penny lives on the input side of the transaction and disappears on the output side. That asymmetry doesn't eliminate a cent of value, it just relocates it, quietly, from my pocket to theirs, one transaction at a time. That's the part that bothers me more than the cent itself. A single penny is nothing. But "nothing" multiplied across every cash customer, every day, indefinitely, is not nothing, it's a small, steady transfer of value made possible by asserting a currency is obsolete only when obsolescence is convenient for the business collecting it. This is the same structure as wage theft, just moved from the paycheck to the register. At first I was hopeful that H Mart would use this space for more restaurant stalls after it created a 4 stall food hall last May, followed by another 5 stall section in the summer. But no more restaurant stalls. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Browsing through the store did bring back a lot of my sweet childhood memories in Asia. Stationery stores in Asia were students' favorite stops. I remember in classes and during recess, we would show off fancy pencils, fragrant erasers, sick stickers, and transformer-level pencil cases. Well, that's what ArtBox offers, and more - what every student would love to own and show off in class. One thing that is totally unique here, well in addition to merchandise offered, is the price tags. The prices are printed in Korean Won (currency) during packaging, presumably in Korea. And the store would have a placard of "price list" at every section, tabling the amounts equivalent in US Dollars! Another observation is there was no staff in the store proper! No cash registers either. I suppose one pays at the supermarket check-out?! I suspect ARTBOX isn't just for students and kids. I think grown up women might find many desirable items here too, such as plushes. I can see this as a fun date stop after some fun dishes at the adjacent food hall. Everything is cute. There are also signs posted on the walls that you cannot try them on. So, I recommend holding it up to about where it would sit on your ear and look in the mirror to see if you like it enough to drop some $. The bracelets and necklaces are cheap as well. They have scarves too, but I recommend buying a scarf from one of the street vendors on 37th Ave near 74th Street. Better quality and price. The other thing to note is that this shop is inside of the subway station and if you want to go just there and nowhere else you have to pay the Subway fare just to go shopping, whereas other shops above ground are free to get to. Target - Ongoing Customer Service Issues I'm writing this…read morereview based on repeated visits and ongoing negative experiences at this Target location. The main issue is poor customer service, lack of staff training, and unprofessional behavior during evening hours. Several employees have been consistently rude, disengaged, or visibly confused when asked basic questions. On multiple occasions, staff stated that items were in stock when they were not, despite the Target website showing availability. When customers point this out, staff often appear baffled, walk away, or simply disengage instead of helping resolve the issue. One serious concern involves ID verification at checkout. On more than one occasion, an employee struggled to read a valid, government-issued passport. I first presented an EU passport and then a U.S. passport, and the cashier repeatedly asked for my date of birth even after it was clearly visible and verbally provided. Despite wearing visible NYC Press credentials, the employee became visibly annoyed and unprofessional instead of asking for assistance from a supervisor. On November 6th, 2025 at approximately 6:55 PM, a Target employee told me that Target does not accept U.S. government-issued passports as valid identification. This is incorrect and deeply concerning, as passports are federally recognized IDs. Situations like this suggest a lack of proper training for employees assigned to roles that require identification verification. Deceptive pricing has also occurred multiple times. I have purchased items that rang up at a higher price than what was clearly listed on the shelf. This has happened more than once, suggesting either poor inventory management or a lack of pricing accuracy, both of which are unacceptable for a major retailer. I applied to work at this location specifically because I wanted to help improve the customer experience. I have professional experience working in government buildings, 501(c)(3) organizations, consulates, and homeless outreach. Despite this background, my application was rejected, while customer-facing roles remain staffed by individuals who appear untrained for basic responsibilities. This Target serves the same neighborhood customers every day. There is little sense of accountability, memory recall, or relationship with the community. Until employee training, supervision, and customer service standards improve, I cannot recommend this location. Update: Do not buy iPhone cable under the target brand, I had to visit this location once again, More than once when I bought a iPhone key, it will fail after 3-4 weeks of usage but this time, I received a dead on arrival product and walk out of the store not knowing this. As of this update, still be very discriminatory This is why I reduce my shopping experiences here And rather shop elsewhere If I do, it's only for an emergency purposes.
