Update: after some years of brooding, I returned to this place for a little hapje and drink with my…read morehusband after a stroll in the park. I was expecting fowl stares, upturned noses, a pissed off waiter and an uncomfortable experience. But instead it was fine. Nice, even. No dirty looks at all. Waiter was prompt and friendly - during my last visit, the waiter preferred to glare at my party from inside rather than take our orders or bring us our cheque. My drink was stellar (I had the lemon squash and I still think about it sometimes). I still think it was too expensive, but it was really good. I griped about the price of the bitterballen at first, but in the end they were good enough to justify the cost. I don't know why my first experience here was so terrible. It could be that I was with English-speaking tourists whose body modifications were visible. Maybe this area attracts people who hate tattoos and Australians? Whatever it was, must've been a fluke, because the atmosphere this time around was pleasant and not at all "we're about to call a lynch mob." --- A couple of friends were passing through Belgium and wanted to check out the museum near here. On the walk back, we decided to stop here for a drink. Oh how I wish we kept walking. I don't know if it was that we were tourists, two of us were black, three of us had visible tattoos and piercings, or what else, but the second we walked onto the patio the customers AND wait staff began staring daggers. I was immediately uncomfortable. No one stopped glaring until we left. Some of the patrons were literally looking hatefully and deeply into our eyes at some points. I was genuinely afraid for our safety. And even if we weren't being glared at the whole time, the service was ridiculously slow. It took an absurd amount of time to get the bill, which was way too high for just four beers. I realize many areas of Flanders are reminiscent of 1950s Alabama, but this place just took it to another level. I would say AVOID for people of color and people with visible body mods if your experience might be ruined by people burning holes in you with their angry glares.
