    Renovated and beautiful!

Royce Hall is an icon! Modeled after Milan's Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, constructed in the tenth and eleventh centuries, this music hall was built in 1929 and was one of the first UCLA campus structures by architect David Allison. I've been coming here since my UCLA days and still love this very elegant and classic venue. And the recent renovation truly brings out its beauty! The sound effect may not be as grand as the Disney Concert Hall but the benefit of the smaller size is you can be closer to the performers and often hear the "real" sound as supposed to broadcast sound. The only thing to take caution is the parking situation - make sure you know the details ( which lot, where is it, how much) before you come; otherwise the parking experience can be stressful and even delay your attendance. It is inevitable as the campus is getting more complicated with more buildings, more students, and visitors. But still, it is worth the trouble to come and enjoy music in this music hall that is almost 100 years old.

The space is beautiful and walking through the beautiful UCLA campus to get to it was a plus. We came to hear the Angel City Chorale. My companion has mobility issues but we had no issues getting to our seats. The staff was very nice too. The only letdown was that the acoustics don't seem to be very good in this hall, Although the choir was quite large the sound was quite muted throughout the show. Don't know if that was due to the equipment from the choir or the hall.

Wow...I honestly was surprised by this venue as we came to see a performance of the movie Apollo 13 that had a live accompaniment of an orchestra. We have seen that movie several times but when you have a band who can match the score it was a rare treat. The staff there were all super friendly and accommodating and the venue itself was beautiful. Parking is a bit of a pain but they had free shuttles over to it so I am not going to knock it down for that since they take care of you getting there.

This is one of the four major buildings at the heart of campus, and there is a lot of history behind it. The architecture is unique: the left and the right side are not symmetrical in pattern which gives a more unique design. After all, during one of the tours a long time ago, there was a student in an architecture class that is failing but passed the class when he was able to identify all the differences between the left and right side of the building. There are different number of bricks between the left and right side! This place has a decently large auditorium, most of which is used for performing arts and various events like the Chinese American Culture Night. These events feature student talent for most and celebrities for some, and they are impressive! The auditorium a long time ago was actually used for lecture hall but I believe they no longer do. To the right of the auditorium are the classrooms, where I have some lectures and discussions in. That area is relatively plain compared to the exterior and the auditorium. On the outside, there are nice columns where people usually take photoshoot pics and grad pics. Definitely go right around sunrise to beat the crowd if you're willing to wake up early. I also got to watch the UCLA Centennial Light Show last weekend which is pretty nice. The Royce Hall is lit up with colorful lights projected from the back, portraying the 100 years of history highlighting major milestones. There are enough regular Royce Hall pictures so I will just attach the light show ones. This place is a must-visit if you are around the area or visiting UCLA!!!

Royce Hall is a solid venue for concerts. We came here to see a few shows, since bands we love from Europe who were touring US had a stop here. It made us discover Royce Hall on the beautiful UCLA campus (my favorite). The architecture is beautiful, so is the setting, the decor is lovely indoor as well. Royce Hall always has a great schedule of concerts, events, full of variety and interesting guests. I like that you can buy tickets from their booth, you can save some fees you'd have to pay when buying online. The tickets are more reasonable here. The staff, made out of students is well trained, they're polite, helpful, attentive. Yes, parking isn't cheap, that'd be a con. Otherwise, I had nice experiences here, we enjoyed the concerts we attended, very memorable evenings for us, special in our hearts. I'd recommend Royce Hall and I'd go again to see a cool concert here. It's a one of a kind venue.

Considering this is a university campus, the size of this hall was impressive and professional! Watched my first ballet here, the Nutcracker, and enjoyed the lighting and dramatic stage props. The LA ballet did a fantastic job incorporating children and members of all ages into their production. Seating wise, we had the best seats in the house but I'd really emphasize for most shows at Royce you can get student pricing for very good deals, some tickets being under $20 for very professional productions. Try to get a sense of the surrounding campus if you have extra time! It's a nice walk around the rolling hills.

What a gorgeous space to see a performance! I saw Toshi Reagon's Parable of the Sower and it was amazing. Great space, excellent acoustics, and an amazing ceiling.

Royce Hall seating chart. The sweet spot of seats is center orchestra starting Row J and back. See the blue box.

It wasn't until I attended the performance by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir & Tallinn Chamber Orchestra 2 Saturdays ago did I realize what a great venue Royce Hall is. Before that was to watch the UCLA VSU culture show when I was a college student...since I was a member of VSA...at a school...on the other side of town. I'll give you a clue. It's not Cal State LA. It's not Occidental. Nope, it's especially not Dongguk University. Mt. Saint Mary's? I can't tell you. Polo. Anyways, Royce Hall is calibrated perfectly for orchestral performances like the Arvo Part works I listened to at Saturday's concert. You can tell that the hall was purposely designed for concerts and orchestral works in mind. The sound from the orchestra goes up to the ceiling, bounces off the curved top panels, and gets broadcast to the audience. No microphones required to amplify sound. That makes it impressive. Parking at one of the campus parking structures is $12. That's impressive in a bad way. Grrrr....for the arts I suppose. -------------------------------------------------- QUICK TIPS: -------------------------------------------------- # Check out UCLA CAP, the Center for Art of Performance, and buy tickets to performances you're interested in at https://cap.ucla.edu/ # It's $12 for full day parking at any of the UCLA parking structures. Parking Structure 5 is the closest parking lot to Royce Hall however I heard it's under construction. Next best is Parking Structure 4, where you go up one level and you're in the quad right next to Janss Steps leading up to Royce Hall. Don't listen to UCLA CAP's suggestion to park at Parking Structure 2 unless you like walking. # The sweet spot for orchestra seats starts around Row H. Anything closer to the stage like Row D is a bit too close. I like watching the show with a full centered view of the stage rather than a close-up view. See my photo. The earlier you buy tickets, the better you can snag the seats you want. # It's cool that you can head out to the side of the building into the outdoor patio for fresh air during intermission. # There was a small bar in the lobby of the hall where you can purchase refreshments such as beer & wine.

This review is from the perspective of attending a Los Angeles Ballet performance of Swan Lake. We were fortunate enough to snagged front row seats. Venue may seem small but it does have an intimate feel. Lights and sound were perfect. Performers were absolutely fantastic. Staff are extremely helpful. Theater parking is located in Parking Structure #2, a good five minutes walk. Parking fee is $12 per vehicle...cash only. Royce Hall is a building on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. Named after Josiah Royce, a California born philosopher who received his bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley in 1875. Like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center this is a true icon. Distinguished, not only for its beauty and great acoustics, but also for the legendary performers who graced its halls. "I find it odd that people will go to a nice restaurant or to the theater in jeans and T-shirts." --Victoria Beckham

    Cassandra Y.

It is a big campus, take a while to find the building. Many parking structure on the campus. The parking for the event is $12. Parking lot is close to the building, only a few minutes walk. The building is well maintained. The theater is not too big. The ceiling is gorgeous!
