I love historic architecture from the 1920's. I work in a school and especially love to see old…read moreschool buildings that are still standing. I was delighted to find this school in Bonita Springs that is not only still in existence but it is lovingly taken care of and still in operation today. First called Survey, Bonita Springs was first incorporated as a city in 1928. The newly completed Tamiami brought a land boom to the area. The one story portion of this brick school was built in 1921 as a three room schoolhouse. It replaced the towns previous one room schoolhouse. Local oak and cypress lumber were used in the masonry vernacular structure Life in Bonita Springs was rural at this time. A fence was placed around the school to keep the cattle from roaming in. While the building did have indoor plumbing there was no electricity. The first principal was Miss Alma McDonald. There was no lunch program in the 1920's but students were often fed soup made by one of the mothers and milk from the McCormick Family Dairy. It was not unusual for students to attend school barefoot. In 1927 the school was expanded with the addition of a two story building and auditorium. The addition was in the more ornate Mediterranean Revival architectural style that was common from 1915-1930. The separate structures were united in the early 1940's. Up to 1948 the school had a lunchroom with a kitchen. The current dual purpose cafeteria and auditorium was added by 1964. The school was the first building in Bonita Springs to be added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. There is a state historic marker that was erected in 2008 displayed in front of the building. This is one of the few examples of a historic school that is still in use today. Obviously the school is currently closed due to the pandemic but it has seen a lot in it's almost 100 years of existence and it will weather this storm too continuing to provide educational learning and a haven to generations of Bonita Springs students.

We were told the summer VPK program was very small and has only 4-8 kids. When I ask her how many teacher for the VPK she told me two. I stressed how important it was for my son to be in a small class. I was very transparent about my sons special needs and IEP. On the first day of school I was panicked for two reasons. One, that only one teacher was in the class and two, they have 19 kids in the class. I was told another teacher would be coming in but all the kids are in one big classroom. The teacher was not made aware of my sons special needs in advance. They do not separate the VPK class from the older kids. Needless to say my son did not do well in this situation. He only attended two and a half days and we were called into see the principle and told the school wasn't a good fit for our son. He needed a smaller class size. If they would have been transparent from the start we could have avoided this whole situation. In the future please think about the child you are impacting and not the money.

How this is handled can be different to you, who is not involved in the system to a parent that is. So if you want to get a little more, get involved. The schools cater to below average to slightly above average. Below average get a lot of help, while very smart kids are left in the dark. Parents of exceptional students should be informed on courses that will stimulate, beyond what the school has to offer. In our case we were not. Nobody was. We had to figure advance course options like FLVS starting in elementary school, ourselves. There is nothing 'exceptional' about that CCPS. CCPS has a full time lawyer and because they create so many issues, just by being rude, they need it. The more issues that are created, the more job security the law department has, so they keep them busy with fresh issues all the time. Its not a satisfactory way to focus on education. And its gone on for decades. I could write a book about all thats CCPS has to offer. From the terrible parking for parents and students at Gulf Coast High School, to the bus drivers, some good, some bad. We could go onto the promoting of religion and religious locations being used for mandatory events by the schools. We could talk about the handing out of bibles on school campuses. We could talk about kids bringing weapons to school and the 'kick a Jew' day in one of the middle schools. Yes, we experience it all in little Naples.

I enrolled my daughter, who is 2 years old.... I dropped her off for her first day explained how covid has definitely kept her out of large group settings and clearly stated she has never done this before as in be around strangers or other kids her age in big groups. I left to run my errands before work and within 45 minutes I was called back to the school to pick her up because she wasn't behaving in "the office" ...as. A. 2. Year. Old.... I immediately drove back and was escorted to get her things and refunded my money immediately before I even entered the door. They claim she isn't ready for structure but made this evaluation within 45 minutes of meeting her. Also claimed they wouldn't be liable if she hurt herself because of her behavior inside their office? I explained she may be scared or overwhelmed and that a 2 year old probably would almost hurt herself in an office setting. I tried asking if I could walk her through her first day and explain what our time at home together consisted of but the owner or manager Jeremy constantly spoke over me and rushed me through conversation and out the door before even considering another minute working with my daughter. Over the phone everything was smooth sailing we will take her and your money thank you business but once I arrived in person the energy was shifted quickly. Long story short moms save yourself the embarrassment especially if you are heavily tattooed and young, they will not take care of your minis. Disappointed in this facility, I would give zero stars if I could but heres 1 for the notification!
